What is the Ling Xing star?
The smoldering star: patient endurance and staying power; emotions need an outlet.
Ling Xing pairs with Huo Xing. Both are fire, but their tempers are completely different: Huo Xing is an open flame that catches at a spark; Ling Xing is a hidden fire, calm on the surface and slowly burning underneath. In the palace where Ling Xing sits, things are often held in first, and by the time they come out they have been building for a long time. Used well, that same smoldering becomes remarkable staying power. To see which palace your Ling Xing sits in, draw your chart.
What kind of star is Ling Xing
Ling Xing is one of the Six Malefic Stars. Xingge describes its nature as "the smoldering star": patient endurance, holding things in, strong staying power, with emotions that need an outlet. Like Huo Xing, volume two of the Quan Shu counts it among the stars of the Southern Dipper. In plain terms, Ling Xing is like a brazier of coals: you may not see a flame, but the heat is always there.
How Ling Xing is placed: for most people it starts at Xu
Ling Xing is placed together with Huo Xing, by the branch of your birth year and your birth hour. Volume two of the Quan Shu gives the starting points:
Born in Yin, Wu or Xu: Chou and Mao. Born in Shen, Zi or Chen: Yin and Xu. Born in Si, You or Chou: Mao and Xu. Born in Hai, Mao or Wei: You and Xu.
In each line, the second branch is where Ling Xing starts: people born in Yin, Wu or Xu years start at Mao, and the other three groups of years all start at Xu. In other words, for roughly three people out of four, Ling Xing is found by treating Xu as the Zi hour and counting forward to the birth hour. The original only gives the starting points; counting forward is standard practice, and Xingge does the same.
Huo Xing and Ling Xing have different starting points but are counted the same way, so for any one person they never share a palace.
Brightness: the same fire-trine table as Huo Xing
Ling Xing's brightness follows the same table as Huo Xing's: at Miao in Yin, Wu and Xu, at Xian in Shen, Zi and Chen, and Xingge's charts mark it the same way. At Miao, Ling Xing's smoldering is resilience; at Xian, it more easily turns into suppression.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
The verse in volume one's chapter on what Ling Xing rules begins:
For those with it in the Life or Body Palace, the nature is brooding.
"Brooding" means having something on your mind and not rushing to say it, which is exactly what Ling Xing looks like. The same verse goes on to speak of "commanding presence and a name," meaning that once that smoldering is put to use, it can achieve things people remember. Volume two describes Ling Xing's best combination:
At Miao, meeting Tan Lang or Wu Qu, it holds the frontier in awe.
Ling Xing at Miao meeting Tan Lang or Wu Qu was read by the ancients as being able to hold a region secure. Today it reads more like someone who can hold out for a long time in a high-pressure position and, in the end, hold out long enough to get results.
Ling Xing in the Life Palace
People with Ling Xing in the Life Palace often look calm on the outside while thinking a lot and feeling deeply inside. They don't voice dissatisfaction straight away; they set it aside first. They don't make a show of their work, but once they commit to something, they see it through.
This temperament pays off wherever resilience is needed: long-term research, negotiations that take endurance, businesses that need years before the results show. Where it gets stuck is holding things in: emotions pressed down until they can't be held any longer and come out all at once, which startles the people around them and wears them out too.
One suggestion for people with Ling Xing in the Life Palace: find a regular outlet for your feelings, whether writing them down, exercise, or talking to someone you trust. The point isn't to stop holding things in, but to keep them from overflowing.
Ling Xing in the twelve palaces
Wherever Ling Xing sits, that palace's affairs are often held in first, with strong staying power afterward:
- Life Palace: calm outside, warm inside, very resilient, as above.
- Spouse Palace: in love, you don't voice dissatisfaction easily, and only say everything once it has built up. Agreeing to talk things over regularly works better than waiting for an outburst.
- Wealth Palace: you earn through long-term effort and suit slow accumulation; also watch for financial pressure you keep to yourself.
- Career Palace: you can carry pressure and last a long time at work, and suit roles that need long-term commitment. Remember to speak up about how hard you are working.
- Travel Palace: away from home you tend to watch quietly rather than rush to show yourself; people only see what you can do once they know you.
- Fortune Palace: you keep things very deep inside, and need habits that help you slow down and say them out loud.
- Health Palace: this is about how stress shows up. With Ling Xing here, pressure tends to build slowly and is easy to miss, so regular rest matters more than stopping only when you can't go on.
As with any star, read Ling Xing with the main star beside it and the San Fang Si Zheng. The Six Malefic Stars lesson gives the full order.
What to read Ling Xing with
- Huo Xing: one fire in the open, one hidden, never in the same palace. When the two sit on either side of a palace, it is called Huo Ling Jia, with pressure coming from both sides.
- Tan Lang: Ling Xing and Tan Lang in the same palace form the Ling Tan pattern, a sister combination to the Huo Tan pattern and equally well regarded in the classics. The Lian Zhen and Tan Lang lesson introduces Tan Lang in full.
- Qing Yang: when Ling Xing also meets Qing Yang, smoldering and drive stack up, so leave yourself extra room.
- Zi Wei: the Quan Shu says Zi Wei can master Huo Xing and Ling Xing. Beside Zi Wei, Ling Xing's smoldering more easily becomes steady strength.
Common questions
What does the Ling Xing star represent?
Ling Xing is one of the Six Malefic Stars and pairs with Huo Xing. Its nature is smoldering: patient endurance, holding things in, strong staying power. It means setting what's on your mind aside rather than rushing to say it. Used well, that is resilience and staying power; used badly, it is emotions held in too long and released all at once.
What are people with Ling Xing in the Life Palace like?
Usually calm on the outside and thinking a lot inside, slow to voice dissatisfaction, and willing to see things through once they commit. The strengths are resilience and a high tolerance for pressure; the sticking point is keeping feelings bottled up. Finding a regular outlet for emotions is the most practical habit for them.
What is the difference between Ling Xing and Huo Xing?
Both are fire, placed together, and never in the same palace. Huo Xing is an open flame, quick to react, quick to flare and quick to pass; Ling Xing is a hidden fire, calm on the surface with strong staying power. In the Quan Shu's verse of starting points, three of the four groups of years start Ling Xing from Xu.
Is Ling Xing with Tan Lang good?
The Quan Shu says Ling Xing at Miao meeting Tan Lang or Wu Qu "holds the frontier in awe." Ling Xing and Tan Lang in the same palace form the Ling Tan pattern, which the classics regard as highly as the Huo Tan pattern. What Ling Xing gives Tan Lang isn't a sudden burst but staying power that lasts.
