Why call it the self line

Among the twelve palaces, the Life Palace is your core, and three more cells also talk about you, just from different angles: Fortune looks inward, Travel looks outward, and Health looks at how you wear down and recover. Put the four together and you see much more of the whole person.

The Fortune Palace: at ease inside or not

The looks at your inner life, interests and hobbies, and habits of thought; the ancients also used it to read "good fortune". The Life Palace is the side you show others, while the Fortune Palace is closer to what you really think about when you're alone. Some people look driven on the outside but have Tian Tong, a star that wants things easy, in their Fortune Palace. Once a project wraps up, they often just want to hide away and do nothing.

The "Tan Xing Yao Lun" in volume three of the *Quan Shu* makes Fortune the fourth step in reading a chart, and adds a note that "the Fortune Palace faces the Wealth Palace". The Wealth Palace is Fortune's , so the two should be read together: how you spend money often has to do with what you want inside. Some people spend on experiences, others on peace of mind.

Volume two describes each star in the Fortune Palace. Tian Ji there is "toil first, ease later"; Tai Yang is "fortune that comes amid busyness". In today's terms: with Tian Ji in Fortune, your mind won't stop until you've thought things through, and only then can you relax; with Tai Yang in Fortune, the busier you are, the more energized you feel.

The Travel Palace: you out in the world

The sits directly opposite the Life Palace and is its most important mirror. The Life Palace is you at home; the Travel Palace is you out in the world: at a new school, a new job, a new city, how others see you and where opportunities come from.

People whose Life Palace stars are reserved but whose Travel Palace stars are outgoing often hear friends say "you only realize how quiet they are once you know them", or "they're a different person abroad". Volume two says Tai Yang in Travel "should go out to prosper and does not do well staying put", meaning this kind of person does well on the move and gets restless shut in at home. Modern readings extend this to choices like business trips, overseas postings and career changes.

The Health Palace: rhythm and pressure

In the classics, the is mainly about the body. Xingge leaves that part aside and only takes what it says about rhythm and pressure: what happens when you're tired, whether you tend to push through or let go, and where your feelings go when they pile up.

The Health Palace faces the Parents Palace, which covers your relationship with elders, bosses and institutions. Pressure often comes from above, so reading these two together is useful. For example, if your Parents Palace star is a stickler for rules and your Health Palace star is the push-through type, you'll often hold on with a demanding manager until the very last moment before saying you can't.

Common misunderstandings

A bright star in the Travel Palace doesn't mean you have to move abroad. It says you open up more in unfamiliar settings; changing departments or joining a new club counts as "going out" too. Challenging stars in the Health Palace don't mean you're fragile either. They're more of a reminder that you react strongly under pressure, so find an outlet early. And a Fortune Palace star that looks hard-working doesn't mean you're unhappy; some people only feel grounded when they're busy.

How to read them

These three cells aren't ranked. When you look at a chart, start by asking yourself three questions: What truly relaxes me? Who do I become in an unfamiliar place? How do I treat myself when I'm tired? Then compare your answers with the stars.

You'll often find that one mode drains you the most and another recharges you the most. Knowing which is which makes it easier to plan your schedule and your time off.
