Placing the Four Transformations

〈安祿權科忌四化訣〉

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the rhyme for the birth-year transformations: depending on the Heavenly Stem of the birth year, four stars take Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji (the Transformations of Wealth, Power, Fame and Obstruction). The four characters in each phrase of the rhyme are, in order, the stars that take Lu, Quan, Ke and Ji. 「甲廉破武陽」 thus means that in a Jia year Lian Zhen takes Hua Lu, Po Jun Hua Quan, Wu Qu Hua Ke and Tai Yang Hua Ji; the Quan Shu itself gives this example in segment 5.

The rhyme uses short names: 機 is Tian Ji, 梁 Tian Liang, 紫 Zi Wei, 月 and 陰 Tai Yin, 同 Tian Tong, 昌 Wen Chang, 巨 Ju Men, 貪 Tan Lang, 弼 You Bi, 曲 Wen Qu, 日 and 陽 Tai Yang, 府 Tian Fu, 破 Po Jun. The small note under the heading, 「挾火而化」, literally 'transforming with fire in hand', is not explained anywhere in the book.

Later writers give different versions for Geng and Ren years; the Quan Shu's version is 'sun, Wu, moon, Tong' for Geng and 'Liang, Zi, Fu, Wu' for Ren. Xingge uses exactly this chapter's transformations for all ten stems.

TranslationJia years: Lian Zhen takes Hua Lu, Po Jun Hua Quan, Wu Qu Hua Ke, Tai Yang Hua Ji. Yi years: Tian Ji Hua Lu, Tian Liang Hua Quan, Zi Wei Hua Ke, Tai Yin Hua Ji. Bing years: Tian Tong Hua Lu, Tian Ji Hua Quan, Wen Chang Hua Ke, Lian Zhen Hua Ji. Ding years: Tai Yin Hua Lu, Tian Tong Hua Quan, Tian Ji Hua Ke, Ju Men Hua Ji.

月
The moon: Tai Yin.
Commentary

The transformation rhyme is the most used table in all of Dou Shu. Once the birth-year stem is known, the four transformations of four stars are fixed and stay for life; these are the birth-year transformations. When reading the rhyme, keep the order Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji in mind and match the four characters of each phrase to it. For the Yi year's 'Ji, Liang, Zi, moon', for instance: Tian Ji takes Hua Lu, Tian Liang Hua Quan, Zi Wei Hua Ke and Tai Yin Hua Ji.

On a Xingge chart the transformations are marked next to the star names. The same table is also used for the stems of the Decade and Annual Luck, and for the palace-stem transformations of the later flying-star school. Where each year's transformations fall can be looked up directly on pages such as the Jia-year transformations.

TranslationWu years: Tan Lang takes Hua Lu, Tai Yin Hua Quan, You Bi Hua Ke, Tian Ji Hua Ji. Ji years: Wu Qu Hua Lu, Tan Lang Hua Quan, Tian Liang Hua Ke, Wen Qu Hua Ji. Geng years: Tai Yang Hua Lu, Wu Qu Hua Quan, Tai Yin Hua Ke, Tian Tong Hua Ji. Xin years: Ju Men Hua Lu, Tai Yang Hua Quan, Wen Qu Hua Ke, Wen Chang Hua Ji.

日
The sun: Tai Yang.
Commentary

The most disputed item in this line is the Geng year. The Quan Shu has 'sun, Wu, moon, Tong': Tai Yang takes Hua Lu, Wu Qu Hua Quan, Tai Yin Hua Ke and Tian Tong Hua Ji. Later there is also a version 'sun, Wu, Tong, moon', with Tian Tong taking Hua Ke and Tai Yin Hua Ji, the two versions swapping Ke and Ji exactly. Xingge follows the Quan Shu.

Which version you choose directly affects the verdicts. The Nature of Tian Tong, for instance, says Tian Tong in Hai is 「庚生人下局」, a low pattern for people born in Geng years (see the original), precisely because Tian Tong takes Hua Ji in Geng years. Under the other version Tian Tong would take Hua Ke in Geng years and the line would make no sense. The Quan Shu is consistent with itself.

4壬梁紫府武宿是,癸破巨陰貪狼停。

TranslationRen years: Tian Liang takes Hua Lu, Zi Wei Hua Quan, Tian Fu Hua Ke, Wu Qu Hua Ji. Gui years: Po Jun Hua Lu, Ju Men Hua Quan, Tai Yin Hua Ke, Tan Lang Hua Ji.

Commentary

For Hua Ke in Ren years the Quan Shu has Tian Fu, while some later versions have Zuo Fu; Xingge follows the Quan Shu and uses Tian Fu. Gui's 'Po, Ju, moon, Tan' is undisputed among the schools, and the key point is Tan Lang taking Hua Ji. The Nature of Tan Lang says that Tan Lang with Huo Xing or Ling Xing 「不喜六癸生人,不耐久長」 (see the original), precisely because Tan Lang takes Hua Ji in Gui years, which cuts down the sudden windfall of the Huo Tan pattern.

When reading the Quan Shu's chapters on the nature of the stars, whenever you meet a sentence of the form 'people born in such-and-such year', first check whether that star takes Lu, Quan, Ke or Ji in that year. It often explains why the ancients said what they said.

5如甲生人廉貞化祿、破軍化權、武曲化科、太陽化忌是也,餘仿此。

TranslationFor example, for people born in a Jia year, Lian Zhen takes Hua Lu, Po Jun Hua Quan, Wu Qu Hua Ke and Tai Yang Hua Ji. The rest follow the same way.

Commentary

The Quan Shu uses the Jia year as its example to make a point about reading: four stars per phrase, in the order Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji, and don't mix them up. In Jia years Tai Yang takes Hua Ji, which is the case behind 「化忌目疾」, eye trouble when it takes Hua Ji, in The Nature of Tai Yang (see the original).

The small note under the heading, 「挾火而化」, is not explained in the book. Some later writers say it means the transformations drive the nature of the stars the way fire does, but that is only a guess. In practice the transformations are not labels of good and bad: Hua Lu is ease and gain, Hua Ji is attachment and getting stuck, and each brings its own lessons. Beginners can start with the lesson on the four transformations.

FAQ

How do you memorise the four transformations?

The Quan Shu's rhyme runs: Jia 廉破武陽, Yi 機梁紫月, Bing 同機昌廉, Ding 月同機巨, Wu 貪月弼機, Ji 武貪梁曲, Geng 日武陰同, Xin 巨陽曲昌, Ren 梁紫府武, Gui 破巨陰貪. In each phrase the four stars take Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke and Hua Ji in that order.

Which four stars transform in a Geng year?

The Quan Shu writes 「庚日武陰同」: Tai Yang takes Hua Lu, Wu Qu Hua Quan, Tai Yin Hua Ke and Tian Tong Hua Ji. Later writers arrange Hua Ke and Hua Ji for Geng years differently (for example Tian Tong Hua Ke and Tai Yin Hua Ji); Xingge follows the Quan Shu's version.

In a Ren year, is it Tian Fu or Zuo Fu that takes Hua Ke?

This chapter of the Quan Shu writes 「壬梁紫府武」: Tian Liang takes Hua Lu, Zi Wei Hua Quan, Tian Fu Hua Ke and Wu Qu Hua Ji. Some schools use Zuo Fu for Hua Ke instead. On Xingge, Tian Fu takes Hua Ke in Ren years, the same as the Quan Shu.
