The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This chapter comes from the palace-by-palace verdicts in volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu and covers the Travel Palace, which shows how a person fares when going out, traveling far, or living away from home. The Travel Palace sits opposite the Life Palace, so it is also often read as 'you as others see you' and 'the stage out in the world'.

Each star gets one entry. It first says whether going out goes well with this star in the Travel Palace, with common verdicts such as 「出外遇貴」 (meeting noble helpers away from home), 「動中則吉」 (lucky only when on the move), 「不耐靜守」 (cannot stay put) and 「在外發財」 (making money away from home); then what changes with each main star sharing the palace; and finally what Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie bring, mostly 「在外多是非」 (much trouble away from home), 「身不安靜」 (no peace) or 「少遂志」 (few wishes fulfilled).

Common words: 「小人不足」 and 「下人不足」 mean petty people or subordinates who resent one and drag one down; 「鬧中」 is a busy, competitive setting; 「巨商」 is a great merchant; 「優伶」 are the actors and entertainers of old; 「提撕」 means to promote and support. The heaviest line in the chapter is in the Lian Zhen entry: with Qing Yang and Tuo Luo added and evil malefic stars in the trines, 「死於外道」, death on the road far from home. The translation keeps its full meaning.

In the base text, the Tai Yin entry in segment 8 contains 「太陰同欠寧靜」, repeating Tai Yin within its own entry, which looks like an error; and in segment 7 the comma in 「貴人扶,持同紫微」 is misplaced. The text notes explain both.

TranslationZi Wei in the Travel Palace: with Zuo Fu and You Bi, noble helpers support one away from home, and one prospers. With Tian Fu, coming and going without obstacle; with Tian Xiang, wealth made away from home; with Po Jun, noble helpers are fond of one, but petty people resent one. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, no peace away from home.

Petty people resent one and drag one down.
Commentary

The Travel Palace is opposite the Life Palace, and the stars of the two face each other, so reading the Travel Palace really means reading 'the palace across from the Life Palace', how a person is out in the world. With Zi Wei in the Travel Palace, the emperor star faces the Life Palace: standing and helpers away from home. With Zuo Fu and You Bi, support from benefactors abroad; with Tian Fu, free coming and going; with Tian Xiang, money made away from home; with Po Jun, 「貴人見愛,小人不足」: those above appreciate one, those below are jealous. See Zi Wei in the Travel Palace.

TranslationTian Ji in the Travel Palace: away from home, one meets noble helpers; at home, there is trouble. With Ju Men, lucky when on the move; with Tian Liang, going out brings satisfaction; with Tai Yin, luck amid busyness. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, much trouble away from home and no peace.

Commentary

Tian Ji in the Travel Palace, 「出外遇貴,居家有是非」: better away than at home. Tian Ji rules movement, so in the Travel Palace it suits going out and changing surroundings. With Ju Men (Mao, You), lucky on the move; with Tian Liang (Chen, Xu), going out brings satisfaction; with Tai Yin (Yin, Shen), luck amid busyness. Every one of these stresses movement: Tian Ji people who stay in one place tend to overthink, and going out actually makes things run smoothly. See Tian Ji in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTai Yang in the Travel Palace: it is good to go out and prosper; one cannot stay quietly at home. With Tai Yin, going out brings luck amid busyness; with Ju Men, toil of the mind. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, neither body nor mind finds rest away from home.

Cannot bear to stay quietly at home.
Commentary

Tai Yang in the Travel Palace, 「宜出外發福,不耐靜守」: Tai Yang is a star that shines outward to begin with, so the Travel Palace is its natural seat. With Tai Yin (Chou, Wei), luck amid busyness away from home; with Ju Men (Yin, Shen), mental toil. Tai Yang's brightness still matters: in Miao or Wang, a name abroad; in Xian (Hai, Zi), hard work away from home with little to show for it. Today it suits work that needs visibility, fieldwork, business travel or a career overseas. See Tai Yang in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationWu Qu in the Travel Palace: money comes in amid noise and bustle; it should not stay quietly at home. With Tan Lang, a great merchant; with Qi Sha or Po Jun, body and mind cannot stay quietly at home; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, trouble is drawn away from home.

Terse; roughly, money comes in amid noise and bustle. The 少 may belong to the next phrase, giving 少不宜靜守, 'when young, it should not stay at home'.
巨商
A great merchant.
Commentary

Wu Qu in the Travel Palace, 「鬧忙中進少,不宜靜守」: busy away from home, but not much coming in. With Tan Lang (Chou, Wei), 「作巨商」: Wu Qu with Tan Lang is a wealth star plus a star of desire, which in the Travel Palace makes a merchant who does big business and travels far. With Qi Sha or Po Jun (Mao and You, Si and Hai), no rest for body or mind. With Wu Qu in the Travel Palace, a wealth star faces the Life Palace, often read as money being easier to make away from home than at home. See Wu Qu in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Tong in the Travel Palace: away from home, one meets noble helpers who give support. With Ju Men, toil of the mind; with Tai Yin, hardship; with Tian Liang, noble helpers are fond of one. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, few wishes fulfilled away from home.

遂志
To have one's wishes fulfilled; to achieve one's aims.
Commentary

Tian Tong in the Travel Palace: support from benefactors away from home. Tian Tong is the star of blessing, so out in the world people like this one and look after them. With Ju Men (Chou, Wei), mental toil; with Tai Yin (Zi, Wu), hardship; with Tian Liang (Yin, Shen), favored by benefactors. Tian Tong with Tian Liang in the Travel Palace is what the later Ji Yue Tong Liang pattern looks like when it brings shelter from outside. The relationships one builds out in the world are this person's capital. See Tian Tong in the Travel Palace.

TranslationLian Zhen in the Travel Palace: away from home, one gets on well and draws close to the powerful; few days are spent at home. With Tan Lang, one gains a foothold amid noise and competition; with Qi Sha, wealth gathered widely away from home; with Tian Xiang, lucky when on the move. With Qing Yang and Tuo Luo added, and evil malefic stars in the trines as well, one dies on the road far from home.

To die away from home, on the road.
Commentary

Lian Zhen in the Travel Palace, 「出外通達近貴,在家日少」. With Tan Lang (Si, Hai), a foothold amid competition; with Qi Sha (Chou, Wei), wealth gathered widely away from home; with Tian Xiang (Zi, Wu), lucky on the move. The second half is the heaviest: with Qing Yang and Tuo Luo, and evil malefic stars in the trines, 「死於外道」. The Qi Sha chapter likewise says 「會囚耗於遷移,死於道路」 (What Does Qi Sha Govern?): Lian Zhen's transformed qi is prisoner, and the prisoner in the Travel Palace was among the combinations the old readers feared most. In modern life it calls for special care with safety when traveling. See Lian Zhen in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Fu in the Travel Palace: away from home, one meets noble helpers who give support. With Zi Wei, one prospers; with Lian Zhen or Wu Qu, money is taken amid noise and competition, as a great merchant.

Textual note: In 「出外遇貴人扶,持同紫微發福」 the comma is misplaced; it should read 「出外遇貴人扶持,同紫微發福」, 'meets noble helpers who give support; with Zi Wei, prospers'.

Commentary

Tian Fu in the Travel Palace: support from benefactors away from home; with Zi Wei (Yin, Shen), prosperity; with Lian Zhen (Chen, Xu) or Wu Qu (Zi, Wu), money amid competition, as a great merchant. With Tian Fu in the Travel Palace, the Life Palace always holds Qi Sha: Qi Sha in the Life Palace with Tian Fu opposite is the structure behind patterns like Qi Sha Facing the Dipper, a hard-charging Life Palace with a treasury backing it from outside. Resources and backing out in the world, well suited to building a career away from home. See Tian Fu in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTai Yin in the Travel Palace: in its temple, going out brings noble helpers and wealth; in a Xian palace, trouble is drawn. With Tai Yang, most fine; 'with Tai Yin', not enough peace; with Tian Tong in a Miao or Wang position, going out, one makes wealth from nothing and founds a household.

Textual note: The Tai Yin entry says 「太陰同欠寧靜」, repeating itself; going by how other palaces are written, the 太陰 should probably be 天機, 'with Tian Ji, not enough peace'.

Commentary

Tai Yin in its temple: helpers and money away from home; in a Xian palace, trouble. With Tai Yang (Chou, Wei), most fine; with Tian Tong in a Miao or Wang position (Zi), a self-made household away from home. The 'with Tai Yin, not enough peace' in this entry is, as the text note says, probably 'with Tian Ji'. Tian Ji and Tai Yin share a palace in Yin and Shen, and Tian Ji's restlessness denying Tai Yin its peace makes good sense of the line. People with Tai Yin in the Travel Palace are gentle and attentive in their dealings out in the world. See Tai Yin in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTan Lang guarding the Travel Palace alone: toil away from home, and windfall money amid noise and competition. With Lian Zhen plus the four malefic stars, hardship away from home; with Wu Qu, a great merchant. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong, Di Jie, the star of waste or malefic stars added, in a given year one is robbed by soldiers.

Windfall money, unexpected and sudden.
Commentary

Tan Lang alone in the Travel Palace: toil away from home and windfall money amid competition. Tan Lang sits alone in Zi, Wu, Yin, Shen, Chen or Xu, facing Zi Wei, Lian Zhen or Wu Qu respectively. With Lian Zhen (Si, Hai) plus the four malefic stars, hardship away from home; with Wu Qu (Chou, Wei), a great merchant, the same phrase as in the Wu Qu entry. The second half, 「流年遭兵劫掠」, was a real risk in times of war; today it reads as robbery, fraud or unexpected losses away from home. See Tan Lang in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationJu Men in the Travel Palace: going out brings toil of the mind and unease; at odds with people, much trouble; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, worse still.

Commentary

Ju Men in the Travel Palace, 「出外勞心不安,與人不足,多是非」: Ju Men's transformed qi is darkness, so out in the world there is much suspicion and talk. The entry lists no companion stars, just a single plain verdict. With Ju Men in the Travel Palace, Ju Men faces the Life Palace, often read as someone who is easily misunderstood away from home, or whose words easily give offense. In daily life: speak with care out in the world, make things clear, and keep a record. See Ju Men in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Xiang in the Travel Palace: away from home, noble helpers promote one. With Zi Wei, lucky and favorable; with Wu Qu, wealth made away from home; with Lian Zhen plus Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing, trouble is drawn and petty people resent one.

提撕
To promote and support.
Commentary

Tian Xiang in the Travel Palace, 「出外貴人提撕」: promotion by benefactors. With Tian Xiang in the Travel Palace, the Life Palace always holds Po Jun: Po Jun in the Life Palace with Tian Xiang opposite, so Po Jun's drive has Tian Xiang out in the world to mediate and vouch for it. With Zi Wei (Chen, Xu), lucky; with Wu Qu (Yin, Shen), money made away from home; with Lian Zhen (Zi, Wu) plus malefic stars, trouble. See Tian Xiang in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Liang in the Travel Palace: away from home, one draws close to the powerful, and noble helpers bring success. With Tian Tong, ample blessings; with Tian Ji, one travels the roads by one's arts.

藝術
In the old sense, crafts and occult arts, not art in today's sense.
Commentary

Tian Liang in the Travel Palace, 「出外近貴,貴人成就」: Tian Liang is the star of shelter, so away from home elders look after one. With Tian Tong (Yin, Shen), ample blessings; with Tian Ji (Chen, Xu), 「藝術途中走」: traveling to make a living by a craft. The old word translated 'arts' meant skills and occult techniques, not the arts of today. The section on star combinations says 「天梁加吉坐遷移,臣商高賈」 (Star Combinations: Tian Liang): Tian Liang with lucky stars in the Travel Palace makes great merchants. See Tian Liang in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationQi Sha in the Travel Palace: many days away, few days at home. With Wu Qu, lucky when on the move; with Lian Zhen, wealth made away from home; with Zi Wei, many wishes fulfilled away from home. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, worry and unrest as well, or wandering to the ends of the earth.

Commentary

Qi Sha in the Travel Palace, 「在外日多,在家日少」. With Qi Sha in the Travel Palace, the Life Palace always holds Tian Fu: Tian Fu in the Life Palace and Qi Sha outside, a steady person who works flat out away from home. With Wu Qu (Mao, You), lucky on the move; with Lian Zhen (Chou, Wei), money made away from home; with Zi Wei (Si, Hai), many wishes fulfilled away from home. With malefic stars, wandering to the ends of the earth. In modern working life this looks like overseas postings, living abroad, or long business trips. See Qi Sha in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationPo Jun in the Travel Palace: going out brings toil of the mind and unrest; in its temple, one rises high away from home. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, one rushes about, living on the road by clever crafts. Meeting Wen Chang, Wen Qu and Wu Qu, an actor.

Towering, lofty: standing out above others.
優伶
In the old world, a person who made a living by acting, singing and dancing.
Commentary

Po Jun in the Travel Palace: mental toil and unrest away from home; in its temple (Zi, Wu), 'towering' success abroad. With Po Jun in the Travel Palace, the Life Palace always holds Tian Xiang. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing, 「奔馳巧藝走途中」; with Wen Chang, Wen Qu and Wu Qu, 「優伶之人」: an actor, which in the old world was a base occupation. Today's counterparts are entertainment, performing, touring and technical work that keeps one on the move, and their social standing is entirely different now. See Po Jun in the Travel Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationWen Chang in the Travel Palace: away from home, one meets noble helpers and rises, but petty people resent one. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, not enough peace away from home.

Commentary

Wen Chang in the Travel Palace: helpers and success away from home, and 「小人不足」, someone jealous. Wen Chang rules documents and reputation, so out in the world one makes a name easily, and draws envy just as easily. With malefic stars, little peace away from home. A good reputation outside, with an eye kept on rivalry among peers and talk behind one's back.

✎ Note

TranslationWen Qu in the Travel Palace: away from home, one draws close to the powerful; with lucky stars added, wealth is gained; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, few wishes fulfilled.

Commentary

Wen Qu: close to the powerful away from home, money with lucky stars, few wishes fulfilled with malefic stars. Wen Qu rules eloquence, so in the Travel Palace it means a good talker and a good mixer out in the world. For work that means talking to people outside, such as sales, public relations or diplomacy, Wen Qu is an asset.

✎ Note

TranslationZuo Fu in the Travel Palace: on the move, noble helpers give support and one prospers; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, subordinates resent one and much trouble is drawn.

下人
Subordinates and servants.
Commentary

Zuo Fu in the Travel Palace, 「動中貴人扶持」: benefactors appear only when one gets out and about. With malefic stars, 「下人不足,多招是非」: resentful subordinates. The Quan Shu's Travel Palace entry for Zuo Fu stresses two things, movement and benefactors. Put in present-day terms: go out more and take part in more, since connections are where the opportunities are.

✎ Note

TranslationYou Bi in the Travel Palace: away from home, one meets noble helpers who give support, and rises; one should not stay quietly at home. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, rivalry with others away from home.

Commentary

You Bi: support from benefactors away from home, and 「不宜靜守」, not one to stay put; with malefic stars, rivalry with others abroad. The entry is almost the same as Zuo Fu's, with 'should not stay at home' added. The section on star combinations says 「右弼左輔終身福厚」, with the gloss 「在命宮遷移是也」, meaning in the Life or Travel Palace (Star Combinations: Kui Yue, Zuo Fu, You Bi and Lu Cun): the Travel Palace counts as one of the best places for Zuo Fu and You Bi.

✎ Note

TranslationLu Cun in the Travel Palace: away from home, food, clothing and income are to one's liking. Meeting Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, much dissatisfaction with people.

Commentary

Lu Cun in the Travel Palace, 「出外衣祿遂心」. The Lu Cun chapter says 「居遷移則佳」, good in the Travel Palace (What Does Lu Cun Govern?), and its verse adds 「祿存對向守遷移,三合逢之利祿宜」 (the chapter's verse). With Lu Cun in the Travel Palace, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always sit in the Health and Friends Palaces, so 'meeting Qing Yang and Tuo Luo' is a given, and the real conditions are Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong and Di Jie. Seen today: steady earnings away from home, well suited to building a life elsewhere.

✎ Note

TranslationQing Yang in the Travel Palace: in its temple, food, clothing and income away from home are to one's liking; with lucky stars added, wealth made amid noise and competition. In a Xian position, there is success, but subordinates often resent one.

Commentary

Qing Yang in its temple: food, clothing and income to one's liking away from home; with lucky stars, money amid competition; in Xian, success, with resentful subordinates. With Qing Yang in the Travel Palace, the punishment star faces the Life Palace, so out in the world competition and conflict come easily. Qing Yang is in its temple in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei. A strong competitor outside, who needs to mind relations with subordinates and partners.

✎ Note

TranslationTuo Luo in the Travel Palace: meeting lucky stars, away from home one meets noble helpers and gains wealth. In a Xian position with Qing Yang, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, much trouble is drawn and subordinates resent one.

Commentary

Tuo Luo with lucky stars: benefactors and money away from home; in Xian (Yin, Shen, Si, Hai) with malefic stars, much trouble. Yin, Shen, Si and Hai are also the positions of Tian Ma, and Tuo Luo with Tian Ma is the 'lame horse' (What Does Tian Ma Govern?), most obvious in the Travel Palace: wanting to move but never moving smoothly. In real life: errands outside run late, so leave slack in travel plans.

✎ Note

TranslationHuo Xing guarding the Travel Palace alone: going out brings unrest; with lucky stars added, money comes in amid noise and competition; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong or Di Jie added, trouble is drawn, and few wishes are fulfilled away from home.

Commentary

Huo Xing alone in the Travel Palace, 「出外不安」; with lucky stars, money amid competition; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong and Di Jie, trouble. Huo Xing in the Travel Palace means a quick temper and quick action out in the world. Take extra care when driving, playing sports or traveling, and in negotiations away from home, cool down before replying.

✎ Note

TranslationLing Xing in the Travel Palace: with lucky stars in the same palace, lucky away from home; with Qing Yang, Huo Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, at odds with people, and trouble is drawn.

Textual note: The Ling Xing entry says 「加羊火鈴空劫」; the 鈴 repeats the star of this entry and is probably an error for 陀, or a stray character.

Commentary

Ling Xing with lucky stars: lucky away from home; with malefic stars, trouble. As the text note says, the repeated 鈴 is probably 陀. Ling Xing's Travel Palace entry is almost the same as Huo Xing's. In today's words: stress away from home that goes unspoken and builds until it bursts, so leave some breathing room when out in the world.

✎ Note

TranslationWhen the Dou Jun passes through and meets lucky stars, it is lucky to be on the move; meeting malefic and killing stars, moving brings quarrels.

斗君
Dou Jun: the palace where the first lunar month falls within a given year; the months are counted from it.
Commentary

When the Dou Jun passes through the Travel Palace, lucky stars make moving lucky; malefic stars bring quarrels on the move. The entry is short, and the point is movement: when the monthly luck reaches the Travel Palace, whether that month is good for going out depends on the good or bad of that palace. When planning trips, business travel or a move, check whether the monthly luck reaches the Travel Palace and whether malefic stars or Hua Ji are there.

FAQ

What does the Travel Palace show in Zi Wei Dou Shu?

The Travel Palace sits opposite the Life Palace and shows how one fares when going out, traveling far or living away from home; it is also often read as how one comes across out in the world. The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu goes star by star through whether going out goes well: whether noble helpers appear, whether money can be made away from home, whether to move or stay put. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, there is mostly trouble and unrest.

Which stars in the Travel Palace does the Quan Shu say meet noble helpers away from home?

The Quan Shu says Zi Wei with Zuo Fu and You Bi, Tian Ji, Tian Tong, Tian Fu, Tai Yin in its temple, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Wen Chang and You Bi in the Travel Palace all meet helpers and support away from home. Lian Zhen is 「出外通達近貴」, getting on well abroad and close to the powerful; Wen Qu 「在外近貴」, close to the powerful away from home; and Zuo Fu 「動中貴人扶持發福」, supported by helpers while on the move.

What does the Quan Shu say about malefic stars in the Travel Palace?

Most entries in the Quan Shu say Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie bring 「在外多是非」, 「心身不清閑」 or 「少遂志」: trouble away from home, no rest for body and mind, few wishes fulfilled, and rivalry with others. Heaviest of all is Lian Zhen: with Qing Yang and Tuo Luo added and evil malefic stars in the trines, 「死於外道」, death on the road; and Tan Lang with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong, Di Jie, the star of waste and malefic stars means being plundered by soldiers in a given year.

What does the Quan Shu say about Qi Sha in the Travel Palace?

The text says Qi Sha in the Travel Palace means 「在外日多,在家日少」, more days away than at home. With Wu Qu, lucky when on the move; with Lian Zhen, wealth made away from home; with Zi Wei, many wishes fulfilled away from home; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, worry and unrest, or wandering to the ends of the earth.
