What Does Tian Fu Govern?

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 1: Rhapsodies, questions on the stars, and chart patterns · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the Tian Fu question in the Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun (Questions and Answers on the Stars) in volume one of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu: 「問天府所主若何?」, what does Tian Fu govern? Tian Fu belongs to earth and is the first star of the Southern Dipper, the one that issues its commands. The Quan Shu calls it the 'treasury of Lu' and the 'Si Ming', keeper of fate; it governs wealth, property, food and salary, and is a star with almost nothing bad said about it. The chapter is laid out as follows:

  • The answer (segment 1): Tian Fu is the master of wealth, and with lucky stars it is the foundation of wealth and rank.
  • Master Xiyi (segments 2 to 4): Tian Fu is the emperor star's deputy and can restrain Qing Yang and Tuo Luo and transform Huo Xing and Ling Xing. With Wen Chang and Wen Qu one is sure to come first in the examinations; meeting Lu Cun and Wu Qu, there is enormous wealth. The Property and Wealth Palaces are its joyful temples, the Friends and Parents Palaces its weak, fallen places. For a woman, she is pure, upright and clever, and helps her husband and children.
  • The verse (segments 6 to 7): 「天府為祿庫,入命終是富」.

While reading, note that the Quan Shu calls the Parents Palace 'Appearance' and the Friends Palace 'Servants'. 'Emptiness' (空亡) means empty positions such as Xun Kong and Jie Kong; Tian Fu meeting them is 'isolated'.

TranslationThe answer: Tian Fu belongs to earth and is the first star of the Southern Dipper, the one that issues its commands. It is the master of wealth. In the Dipper it is the lodge that governs blessing and power; meeting lucky stars, it is always the foundation of wealth and rank, and is surely to be judged by flourishing letters.

主令
Issuing commands.
Terse; literally 'judged by flourishing letters', not necessarily the star Wen Chang.
Commentary

Tian Fu is placed as 「南斗主令第一星」 and 「財帛之主宰」. It and Zi Wei lead the two sets of main stars, one of the Southern Dipper and one of the Northern; in chart-building, Tian Fu's position is exactly Zi Wei's mirror image across the Yin-Shen axis. That is why the Quan Shu often discusses Zi Wei and Tian Fu together.

「定作文昌之論」 is easily misread as saying Tian Fu needs the star Wen Chang; as the note points out, here it probably means flourishing in letters. Tian Fu itself is a treasury star and a star of command, standing for steadiness and preserving what one has; 'judged by flourishing letters' refers to its refined, courteous nobility, consistent with the next segment's 'gentle, kind, upright and refined' and 'with Wen Chang and Wen Qu, sure to come first in the examinations'. For Tian Fu's basic nature, compare Tian Fu.

TranslationMaster Xiyi said: Tian Fu is the star of the Southern Dipper that lengthens life and frees from distress; it is also called the Si Ming, keeper of fate. It is the star of the chief minister who keeps the state secure; in the Dipper it governs power, and in a fate it is the spirit in charge of wealth, property, food and salary. It is the emperor's deputy; it can restrain Qing Yang and Tuo Luo into followers, and transform Huo Xing and Ling Xing into blessings. It gives the person fine, unusual looks and a gentle, kind, upright and refined nature. Meeting Wen Chang and Wen Qu, one is sure to come first in the examinations.

司命
Si Ming: the deity who keeps a person's fate.
上相
The chief minister, first among the ministers.
首選
First place in the imperial examinations.
Commentary

Master Xiyi makes Tian Fu's relation to Zi Wei clear here: 「為帝之佐貳」, Tian Fu is the chief minister, not the ruler. It 「能制羊陀為從,能化火鈴為福」, much like Zi Wei's restraining Huo Xing and Ling Xing and subduing Qi Sha, but by different means: Zi Wei suppresses by authority, Tian Fu absorbs by tolerance, which is where later writers got the idea of Tian Fu's generous nature.

「與昌曲會,必登首選」 says that Tian Fu meeting Wen Chang and Wen Qu comes first in the examinations. On a Xingge chart Tian Fu is Miao or Wang in most palaces and De only in Mao, Si, Shen and Hai. Its opposite palace is always Qi Sha, so when Tian Fu sits in the Life Palace the Travel Palace is always Qi Sha, something to read together with Tian Fu.

TranslationMeeting Lu Cun and Wu Qu, there is sure to be enormous wealth. The secret formula says: 'Tian Fu is the treasury of Lu; meeting it in the Life Palace, one is rich in the end', and this is what it means. It does not like the four malefic stars clashing and breaking it; even so, though there is no official rank, it still means plenty of money and land. It takes the Property and Wealth Palaces as its joyful temples and the Friends and Parents Palaces as weak and fallen, and the Siblings Palace as ordinary. When the Life Palace meets it with the help of Tian Xiang, it means one lacks neither spouse nor children.

The treasury of Lu: a storehouse for wealth and salary.
Literally 'servants': the Friends Palace.
相貌
Literally 'appearance': another name the Quan Shu uses for the Parents Palace.
Commentary

「天府為祿庫,命逢終是富」 is the core line on Tian Fu. Meeting Lu Cun and Wu Qu means 「巨萬之富」: Lu Cun is Lu, Wu Qu is the wealth star and Tian Fu is the treasury; with all three, there is both income and the ability to save it. Wu Qu shares a palace with Tian Fu in Zi and Wu, and elsewhere may meet it from the San Fang. On a Xingge chart, select Tian Fu's palace and see whether Wu Qu, Lu Cun or Hua Lu is in the same palace or its San Fang Si Zheng.

「以田宅財帛為廟樂,以奴僕相貌為陷弱」 is the same kind of palace reasoning as the Zi Wei chapter's 'four fallen palaces': a treasury star fits best in the Wealth and Property Palaces, while in the Friends or Parents Palace it keeps its wealth for others. Note that this is not the Miao and Xian of the brightness table; the brightness in the small text on the chart does not change with the palace. In 「得相佐,主夫妻子女不缺」, the 'minister' can mean Tian Xiang; Tian Xiang is always in Tian Fu's trine, so this reads more like saying that Tian Xiang itself is bright and not spoiled by what flanks it.

TranslationIf it meets emptiness, it is isolated; but one cannot judge every case the same way, and on the whole this star mostly means good fortune. It is also said: this star is lucky in any palace. A woman who has it is pure, upright and clever, helps her husband and benefits her children; even if clashing and breaking is seen, she is judged good. It suits monks and Daoist priests, who receive a master's title.

空亡
Emptiness: 'empty' positions such as Xun Kong and Jie Kong.
Commentary

「若值空亡是為孤立」 is what Tian Fu fears most, which later writers call the 'empty treasury': when the treasury star falls on Xun Kong or Jie Kong, or meets Di Kong and Di Jie, the treasury holds nothing, and preserving what one has becomes guarding an empty shell. On a Xingge chart, check whether the minor stars in Tian Fu's palace include Xun Kong, Jie Lu or Kong Wang, or whether Di Kong or Di Jie share the palace. The text itself says 「不可一例而推斷」: emptiness only takes points away; it does not turn things around.

The second half, 「不論諸宮皆吉」 and 「雖見沖破,亦以善論」, is the Quan Shu's most lenient verdict on Tian Fu. For a woman, 「清正機巧,旺夫益子」 follows a logic close to the Zi Wei chapter's judging a woman meeting Po Jun a noble lady: the ancients counted running a household and guarding its wealth as a woman's virtues, and Tian Fu is precisely the star of preserving what one has.

TranslationTian Fu is the treasury of Lu; in the Life Palace one is rich in the end, buys estates of ten thousand qing, and the family's wealth is beyond counting. A woman sits in her fragrant chamber; a man eats the heavenly salary.

Ten thousand qing: a vast area of farmland.
天祿
The heavenly salary: an official's pay from the court.
Commentary

This verse boils Tian Fu's image down to the simplest picture: estates of ten thousand qing and family wealth beyond counting. 「女命坐香閨,男人食天祿」 follows the old division of roles between the sexes: the woman enjoys comfort at home, the man draws an official salary.

Tian Fu's wealth is the accumulating kind, built by preserving, managing and steady effort, not by speculative windfalls. In a modern career this means being good at managing money and resources and at running systems, suited to stable work in finance, administration or management. Keep in mind that 「入命終是富」 describes Tian Fu's nature; actual wealth also depends on the Wealth Palace and the luck periods, and one cannot say someone is rich just because Tian Fu sits in the Life Palace.

TranslationThis is a star of blessing and good fortune; on all four sides nothing is lacking.

Commentary

This line closes the verse; 「四外無不足」 means nothing is lacking in any direction. It continues segment 4's verdict that 「此星不論諸宮皆吉」: among the Quan Shu's fourteen main stars, Tian Fu, like Tian Tong and Tian Liang, is one of the few with almost no bad verdicts.

But readers need not take the line as a guarantee. Tian Fu's weak point was already stated in segment 4: meeting emptiness, it is isolated. The Quan Shu also mentions, in the section on star combinations and elsewhere, that Tian Fu with malefic stars sees success and failure. Taken together, Tian Fu is a star with a 'steady base', not easily brought to total ruin when tested, and that is the more down-to-earth meaning of 'nothing lacking on all four sides'.
