What Does Tian Xing Govern?

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 1: Rhapsodies, questions on the stars, and chart patterns · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the Tian Xing question in the Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun (Questions and Answers on the Stars) in volume one of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu: 「問天刑星所主若何?」, what does Tian Xing govern? Master Xiyi's answer is heavy: with Tian Xing guarding the Life or Body Palace, 「不為僧道定主孤刑,不夭則貧」; parents and siblings are not all spared, and a Decade or Minor Luck meeting it means leaving home for religious life, or lawsuits, prison and loss of money; only in its temple is it lucky. The verse (segments 3 to 5) argues Tian Xing's case: 「天刑未必是凶星,入廟名為天喜神」. With Wen Chang, Wen Qu and lucky stars, one can present plans to the court; in Yin, Mao, You and Xu it is bright, and meeting literary stars one can command a million troops on the frontier. The last verse returns to loneliness and harm: as a monk or Daoist one is alone, and arriving together with Tian Ku, one is in the end a person with illness.

The meaning of 三不子 in segment 5 is unclear; the translation guesses from the literal words.

TranslationMaster Xiyi answered: if Tian Xing guards the Life or Body Palace and the person does not become a monk or Daoist priest, he is sure to be lonely and to harm and be harmed; if not short-lived, then poor. Parents and siblings cannot all be spared. When the two luck periods meet it, it means leaving home for religious life, or official lawsuits, prison and loss of money. In its temple it is lucky.

Loneliness and harm to and from family.
夭
Dying young.
Commentary

Tian Xing is placed by birth month, counting forward from You for the first month. Its nature is its name: 刑, punishment, covering legal punishment, harm to family and loneliness. The verdicts here are heavy: a monk or else lonely and harmed, poor if not short-lived, parents and siblings not all spared, and in a luck period leaving home, lawsuits, prison and loss of money.

But the last sentence, 「入廟則吉」, turns all of it around, and the verse below is entirely about the good of Tian Xing in its temple. The Quan Shu's habit with harsh stars is to list the bad first and add the good afterwards, as in the Huo Xing and Ling Xing chapters, so read to the end before judging. Tian Xing can be seen today as an energy of discipline, rules and self-control: an asset in fields built on rules and blades such as the military and police, law, and medicine (surgery); in relationships, a tendency to be severe and isolated.

TranslationTian Xing is not necessarily a bad star; in its temple it is called the spirit of joy. If Wen Chang, Wen Qu and lucky stars come to gather with it, one is sure to present plans to the royal court.

王庭
The royal court.
Commentary

「天刑未必是凶星,入廟名為天喜神」: this line directly overturns the negative impression of the last segment. Tian Xing in its temple meeting Wen Chang and Wen Qu, 「定然獻策到王庭」, is the pattern of a scholar employed for his policy essays and valued by the court. Tian Xing's strictness plus Wen Chang and Wen Qu's pen makes someone able to write policy advice that carries weight.

Note that the 'spirit of joy' here is a figure of speech, not the minor star Tian Xi. On a Xingge chart Tian Xing has a position but no brightness mark, so whether it is in its temple has to be judged from the palaces listed in the next part of the verse.

TranslationTian Xing in Yin, and in You and Xu, and also in Mao, is naturally bright. Sure to meet literary stars, one achieves great things and commands a million troops on the frontier.

Commentary

This passage gives Tian Xing's temple positions: Yin, Mao, You and Xu. Tian Xing in its temple meeting literary stars, able in both letters and arms, makes a great general commanding troops. The last segment's 「獻策到王庭」 is the civil path and this segment's 'commanding a million troops' the military one; in its temple Tian Xing can go either way.

Tian Xing's brightness is not marked on a Xingge chart, so check whether the branch of Tian Xing's cell is one of Yin, Mao, You or Xu. In the Tai Yang chapter Master Yuchan says 「太陽司權貴為文,遇天刑為武」 (see What Does Tai Yang Govern?): Tian Xing turns a literary star toward military office, a view the Quan Shu holds consistently.

Translation'Three not-sons' is the name of Tian Xing: as a monk or Daoist priest one is alone. When Tian Ku arrives together with it, one cannot escape being, in the end, a person with illness.

三不子
Meaning unclear, possibly a corrupt passage; kept as literally written.
Commentary

「三不子兮號天刑」 is unclear, and as the note says the text may be corrupt. The second half is clear: as a monk or priest one is alone; arriving together with Tian Ku, one is in the end a person with illness. Tian Xing governs loneliness and Tian Ku grief, so the two in one palace stack loneliness on sorrow.

Tian Xing is placed by month and Tian Ku by year branch, so their sharing a palace is a chance combination, not a fixed structure. It can be read now as a tendency toward low moods, a weaker constitution and difficulty getting close to people, and whether that holds depends on whether the main star of the Life Palace can resolve it.
