In 1949 (nominal age 38) he made On the Town, giving co-director credit to Stanley Donen, whom he had brought to Hollywood as his assistant choreographer. Kelly loved France and spoke fluent French. In 1960 the Paris Opera invited him to create a modern ballet for its company on material of his own choosing, making him the first American to receive such a commission; the result, Pas de Dieux, was a great success, and the French government made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour.
