Proving electromagnetic waves, one measurement at a time
From 1886 to 1889 Hertz carried out a series of experiments proving that what he observed were the electromagnetic waves Maxwell had predicted: he used a ring detector to record how the waves' magnitude and direction changed, measured their speed as equal to the speed of light, and also measured field intensity, polarisation and reflection. His chart shows Ju Men (Wang) with Hua Ji in the Life Palace. Ju Men is often read as getting to the bottom of things, and Hua Ji marks where thought and effort go. The two can be read together.
Source ↗A spark in the autumn of 1886
In the autumn of 1886 (nominal age 30), Hertz, by then a professor at Karlsruhe, was experimenting with a pair of Riess spirals when he noticed that a discharge into one coil produced a spark in the other. With an idea for building an apparatus, he now had a way to proceed with the "Berlin Prize" problem of 1879 on proving Maxwell's theory. In the annual Four Transformations of 1886, Tian Tong (Ping) takes Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) into his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace stands for work, and Hua Lu is gain, which lines up with his finding the way forward for his experiments that year.
Source ↗A daughter who became a biologist
Hertz and his wife Elisabeth had two daughters: Johanna, born in 1887, and Mathilde, born in 1891, who went on to become a notable biologist. His chart shows Zi Wei (Wang) in the Children Palace. The Children Palace stands for one's children, and Zi Wei, the chart's ruling star, is often read as being held in high regard. It is worth setting side by side with his daughter's standing in the academic world.
