The Life Palace and the Body Palace

One is who you started as, the other is who you're growing into · 3 min

There are two of you

The you your friends see at first glance, and the thing you've been putting more and more of yourself into these past few years, aren't always the same.Zi Wei reads these two sides separately. One is called the Life Palace, the other the Body Palace.

The Life Palace: the side you're born with

The is where the whole chart starts. It shows your innate personality and your first reactions. However much you learn or change later, what surfaces first when something happens is often still your Life Palace.

The Body Palace: the direction you grow into

The is where you put more and more effort as life goes on; later practitioners often say it shows more clearly after midlife. It isn't a room of its own. It lodges inside one of the existing cells.

The Body Palace can only live in six places

Birth double-hourBody Palace in
Zi, WuLife Palace (Life and Body together)
Chou, WeiFortune Palace
Yin, ShenCareer Palace
Mao, YouTravel Palace
Chen, XuWealth Palace
Si, HaiSpouse Palace

The Body Palace only ever rotates through these six cells. It never appears in the other six.

How the two of you differ

Life PalaceYour innate foundation, more visible when you're young.
Body PalaceWhere your effort goes, more visible as you get older.

Good stars in Body and Life are what matter most; good stars along the luck periods are the glory.

In plain wordsStrong stars in your Life and Body Palaces matter most; meeting good stars in the luck periods you pass through is a bonus. The ancients read in order: first the person, then the timing.

Where is your Body Palace

Whichever room your Body Palace lands in is the theme you'll keep coming back to and putting effort into.

Your Body Palace is in the Wealth Palace: as life goes on, more and more of your effort goes here.

Deeper reading

The Life Palace is the starting point

The is counted from your birth month and double-hour. It's the first cell of the chart, and the other eleven rooms run counterclockwise from it. The first step in reading a chart is to see which stars live in the Life Palace: the main stars set the basic personality, and the auxiliary and minor stars fill in the details. What happens when the Life Palace has no main star is covered in the last lesson of this chapter.

The "Tan Xing Yao Lun" in volume three of the *Quan Shu* lists the order in which the ancients read a chart, and its very first line is "first, look at the Life Palace". Only then come the Body Master, the trines and the Fortune Palace. The Life Palace is the foundation, and every other cell is built on it.

Where the Body Palace comes from

As Chapter 0 explained, you find the Life Palace by counting counterclockwise from your birth-month cell to your birth hour, and the by counting clockwise from the same cell. One goes each way, so the distance between the two cells depends only on the hour, not the month. The twelve double-hours pair up two by two, so the Body Palace can only land in six places.

The Body Palace is not a thirteenth room. It's more like a sticker placed on one of those six cells. That cell keeps its own palace name, and gains an extra layer of meaning: it's also where you put the most effort as life goes on.

Where the Body Palace sits, where your focus goes

Practitioners tend to read it like this:

  • Life and Body together: what you think and what you do line up closely. Your personality is distinct and you rarely change course. You stay very much yourself along the way, though it's harder for you to look at things from a new angle.
  • Body in Fortune: as life goes on, you care more and more about feeling at ease inside. A common pattern: once income is steady, you start spending your time on interests.
  • Body in Career: how you perform at work is tied to who you feel you are. Changing jobs isn't just a change of salary for you; it's a change of identity.
  • Body in Travel: new surroundings and new experiences feed you, and staying in one place too long feels stifling.
  • Body in Wealth: you're especially attuned to how money and resources are arranged, and you like your accounts clear.
  • Body in Spouse: close relationships have a big influence on you, and you're very willing to work on them. A single remark from a partner can often change your decision.

These are tendencies, not rules.

What the classics say

The "Tai Wei Fu" opens with:

In general, Body and Life are the root of one's fortune, and one's origins add the means for hardship or success.

That is, the Life and Body Palaces are the root of a person's good fortune, and together with background, they show how smoothly life goes. Volume three has three lines that compare the two cells:

When Body and Life are both good, wealth and rank come together; when Body is good and Life is poor, it is still counted as fine; when Life is weak and Body strong, wealth does not gather.

In plain terms: both cells being strong is ideal; a strong Body Palace with a poor Life Palace is still seen as good; a weak Life Palace with a strong Body Palace makes money harder to hold on to. What the three lines share is that the ancients never looked at the Life Palace alone; the Body Palace is always read alongside it.

Only clearer after midlife?

Many teachers say the Body Palace "shows more clearly after midlife". That isn't in the *Quan Shu*; it's something later practitioners distilled from experience. An easier way to understand it: when you're young you mostly live by your innate reactions, and as you make more and more choices, those choices slowly push you toward your Body Palace cell. So reading your Body Palace at twenty may not ring a bell, while looking back at forty it often fits.

In practice, you can put the main stars of your Life and Body Palaces side by side. If their personalities are similar, the person tends to be consistent over time; if they differ a lot, there's often a clear turn at some stage, for example going from a homebody to someone who's always out.

Don't confuse it with the Body Master

The is a star set by the branch of your birth year; the Body Palace is a cell on the chart. One is a star and the other a room; only the names are alike. When the "Tan Xing Yao Lun" says "next, look at the Body Master", it means the star, not the Body Palace.
