Fourteen stars in three groups
Cast a few charts and you'll notice that whenever Qi Sha is in the Life Palace, the Wealth and Career Palaces always hold Po Jun and Tan Lang. That's no coincidence. The fourteen main stars' positions are tied together, falling roughly into three groups, each with its own pace.
Sha Po Lang: the group that breaks new ground
Sha Po Lang is Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang. The three are always in trine with each other: with one in the Life Palace, the other two are in Wealth and Career. This group's rhythm is big swings, and the more they move, the better they do.
Ji Yue Tong Liang: the group that works steadily
Ji Yue Tong Liang is Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong and Tian Liang. This group thinks things through, pays attention to detail and looks after people. They do well refining things within a system, building weight over time.
Zi Fu Lian Wu Xiang: the group that runs things
Zi Fu Lian Wu Xiang is Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Lian Zhen, Wu Qu and Tian Xiang. This group values order and can manage both people and money. The bigger the stage, the better they hold it, and they're often the one pushed forward to take charge.
The three groups side by side
| Group | Main stars | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Sha Po Lang | Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tan Lang | Breaking new ground, charging first |
| Ji Yue Tong Liang | Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong, Tian Liang | Planning, the long steady haul |
| Zi Fu Lian Wu Xiang | Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Lian Zhen, Wu Qu, Tian Xiang | Managing people and money |
Qi Sha and Po Jun should go out into the world; Ji, Yue, Tong and Liang make clerks.
In plain wordsSha Po Lang people do better venturing out; Ji Yue Tong Liang people are suited to being "clerks", which today means a stage of professional, public-service or advisory work.

Why the stars form teams
The fourteen main stars aren't placed at random. When the stars are placed, Zi Wei goes first, and the Zi Wei group (Tian Ji, Tai Yang, Wu Qu, Tian Tong and Lian Zhen) follows at fixed intervals; Tian Fu then takes its seat mirroring Zi Wei's position, and the Tian Fu group (Tai Yin, Tan Lang, Ju Men, Tian Xiang, Tian Liang, Qi Sha and Po Jun) follows at fixed intervals too.
Because the intervals are fixed, some stars always stand in the same relative positions, whoever's chart it is:
- Qi Sha, Po Jun and Tan Lang are always in trine with each other, so as soon as one is in the Life Palace, the other two are in Wealth and Career.
- Zi Wei, Lian Zhen and Wu Qu are always in trine with each other; Tian Fu and Tian Xiang are always in trine too.
- Tian Ji and Tian Tong are always in trine, and so are Tai Yin and Tian Liang. Whether these two pairs meet in the same San Fang Si Zheng depends on where Zi Wei falls, which is why charts with all four of Ji Yue Tong Liang together are rarer.
- Qi Sha always faces Tian Fu, and Po Jun always faces Tian Xiang.
The "three star groups" is a later way of organizing things. The *Quan Shu* does use the three words "Sha Po Lang" together, but never splits the fourteen stars into three teams; the closest it comes is the line in the "Gu Sui Fu" in volume one: "Qi Sha and Po Jun should go out into the world; Ji, Yue, Tong and Liang make clerks."
Sha Po Lang
The life rhythm of Sha Po Lang is big swings. Qi Sha dares to charge, Po Jun dares to tear down, and Tan Lang wants to try everything. Practitioners say this type can't sit still, and change is their fuel: switching jobs, moving house and changing careers are often when they do their best.
There's a detail few people notice: with Qi Sha in the Life Palace, Tian Fu is always opposite; with Po Jun in the Life Palace, Tian Xiang is always opposite. Across from the ones who charge sit the stars that keep the vault and keep the rules. So what this type needs to practice isn't staying still, but leaving a way back before each departure, borrowing the steadiness of the star across the way.
Ji Yue Tong Liang
Ji Yue Tong Liang is a thinking and caring combination: Tian Ji plans, Tai Yin is attentive, Tian Tong is easygoing and Tian Liang loves looking after people. The "clerks" of "make clerks" were the people in old government offices who did the real work; today, think of professional roles, public service, consultants and advisers. The line isn't looking down on them; it says they shine where there's a system and a division of labor. The strength is steadiness; the thing to watch is overthinking and hesitating too long to act.
Zi Fu Lian Wu Xiang
Zi Fu Lian Wu Xiang is a management and order combination: Zi Wei is the emperor star, Tian Fu keeps the vault, Lian Zhen holds to principle, Wu Qu handles money and Tian Xiang mediates. People of this type often get pushed into charge and can hold the stage; what they need to practice is letting go, giving the people around them room to shine.
How to read it
Whichever team has the most stars in your Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng is your life's main theme. Many charts are mixed. For example, with Zi Wei and Tan Lang together in the Life Palace in Mao, the Wealth Palace holds Wu Qu and Po Jun: the managing emperor star lives with the novelty-loving Tan Lang, and the way you earn carries Po Jun's tear-down-and-charge, so it reads as "steady with a charge in it".
A common misunderstanding is to treat the groups like a personality test, thinking Sha Po Lang means impulsive and Ji Yue Tong Liang means unambitious. The groups describe rhythm, not ability. Within the same team, whether the main stars are bright and where the transformations land make a far bigger difference; the groups are just a first-glance classification, and the details always come back to each star.
