Placing the Life and Body Palaces

〈安身命例〉

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the opening of the setup rules in volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu. It covers the first step of building a chart, how to place the Life Palace and the Body Palace, and then uses one example to link the steps that follow.

  • Placing Life and Body (segments 1 to 3): start the first month at the Yin palace and count forward to the birth month; from that palace start the Zi hour and count backward to the birth hour for the Life Palace, forward to the birth hour for the Body Palace.
  • Leap months (segment 4): someone born in a leap month is set up as if born in the following month.
  • From the Life Palace to the bureau and Zi Wei (segments 5 and 6): use the year stem to work out the Heavenly Stem of the Life Palace, take the Na Yin element of the Life Palace's stem and branch to fix the Five Elements Bureau, then find Zi Wei on the bureau chart by birth day. The rhymes for each step are in the chapters that follow: The Five Elements Bureau and the Sixty Na Yin, and the setup charts.
  • Order of the twelve palaces (segments 7 and 8): from the Life Palace, Siblings, Spouse, Children and so on, laid out backward around the circle.

In the Quan Shu, 'forward' means following the order of the Earthly Branches (Yin, Mao, Chen), which on the usual chart drawing is clockwise; 'backward' is the reverse. 「妻妾」 is the Spouse Palace and 「奴僕」 is the Friends Palace. Xingge places the Life and Body Palaces exactly as this chapter does; only the leap-month rule differs, see segment 4.

1大抵人命俱從寅上起正月,順數至本生月止,又自人生月起子時逆至本生時安命,順至本生時安身。

TranslationIn general, every person's chart starts the first month at the Yin palace and counts forward until the birth month; then, from the palace of the birth month, starts the Zi hour and counts backward to the birth hour, placing the Life Palace there, and counts forward to the birth hour, placing the Body Palace there.

順數
Count forward: follow the order of the Earthly Branches (Yin, Mao, Chen), clockwise on the usual chart drawing; counting backward is the reverse.
本生月
The lunar month of birth.
Commentary

Placing Life and Body uses only two numbers, the lunar birth month and the birth hour; the year and the day are not needed yet. A worked example: born in the third month in the Mao hour. The first month starts at Yin; count forward, Mao is the second month and Chen the third, so stop at Chen. Start the Zi hour at Chen and count backward: Zi at Chen, Chou at Mao, Yin at Yin, Mao at Chou, so the Life Palace is in Chou. Likewise, start the Zi hour at Chen and count forward: Zi at Chen, Chou at Si, Yin at Wu, Mao at Wei, so the Body Palace is in Wei. The first month starts at Yin because the Xia calendar takes the Yin month as the first month.

On a Xingge chart the Life Palace is marked, and so is the Body Palace; both positions are worked out exactly this way. Xingge takes the birth date in the Western calendar and converts it to the lunar month before counting, so readers do not need to convert anything themselves. For what the Life and Body Palaces each govern, see Life Palace and Body Palace.

2假如正月生子時就在寅宮安身命,丑時逆轉丑安命,順去卯安身,寅時逆轉子安命,順至辰安身,

TranslationFor example, born in the first month in the Zi hour, the Life and Body Palaces are both placed in the Yin palace. Born in the Chou hour, turn back one palace from Yin to Chou for the Life Palace, and go forward one palace to Mao for the Body Palace. Born in the Yin hour, turn back to Zi for the Life Palace, and count forward to Chen for the Body Palace.

Commentary

The three examples here expose the pattern behind the rule: each hour later, the Life Palace steps back one palace and the Body Palace steps forward one, so they move two palaces further apart each time. In the Zi hour the two overlap, in the Chou hour they are two palaces apart, in the Yin hour four.

It is clearer with palace names. First month, Chou hour: Life in Chou, Body in Mao, and Mao, the third palace counting forward from the Life Palace, is the Fortune Palace. Yin hour: Life in Zi, Body in Chen, and Chen is the Career Palace. In other words, which named palace the Body Palace falls on depends only on the birth hour, not on the month. That is the most useful consequence of 'the other palaces follow the same way' in the next segment.

✎ Note

3餘宮仿此,

TranslationThe other palaces follow the same way.

Commentary

「餘宮仿此」 can be turned into a table that is easy to remember. Born in the Zi or Wu hour, the Body Palace shares the Life Palace; Chou or Wei, the Body Palace is on the Fortune Palace; Yin or Shen, the Career Palace; Mao or You, the Travel Palace; Chen or Xu, the Wealth Palace; Si or Hai, the Spouse Palace. The Body Palace only ever lands on these six, never on Siblings, Children, Health, Friends, Property or Parents.

A common mistake is to treat the Body Palace as a thirteenth palace; it is really a marker laid over one of the twelve. The Quan Shu talks about the Body Palace in many places, for example the star-combinations chapter's 「身吉命凶亦為美論」 and 「命弱身強財源不聚」 (see these lines); before reading them, first find which palace the Body Palace lies on.

4又若閏月正月生者要在二月內起安身命,凡有閏月具要依此為例,納音甲子歌誤要熟讀。

TranslationAlso, someone born in the leap first month must have the Life and Body Palaces set up within the second month; every leap month must follow this example. The Na Yin Jia Zi song must be learned by heart.

納音甲子歌
The rhyme that pairs each of the sixty stem-branch pairs with a Na Yin element; see The Five Elements Bureau and the Sixty Na Yin.

Textual note: 「具要」 is usually written 「俱要」 (all must). In 「誤要熟讀」, 「誤」 should be 「務」: it must be learned by heart.

The Xingge approachXingge handles leap months this way: up to the 15th of a leap month counts as that month, from the 16th on counts as the next month. The Quan Shu counts the whole leap month as the next month. For people born in the second half of a leap month the two agree; for people born in the first half, the Life and Body Palaces differ by one palace.

Commentary

There is at most one leap month in a year, roughly once every three years, so most people never need this rule. The Quan Shu's solution is blunt: the whole leap month counts as the next month. Xingge's conversion is described under 'The Xingge approach' above; it only affects people born in the first half of a leap month. By the Quan Shu, the palace reached when counting the months moves one further, and the Life and Body Palaces both shift one palace forward with it.

To know whether you were born in a leap month, look at the lunar birth date on your Xingge chart: if it is marked as a leap month, you were. The Quan Shu only says that placing Life and Body uses the changed month; it does not say whether the stars placed by month, Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Xing and Tian Yao, change as well. The second half of the sentence, 'the Na Yin Jia Zi song must be learned by heart', announces the next step, fixing the Five Elements Bureau; the rhyme is in The Five Elements Bureau and the Sixty Na Yin.

5如甲生人安命在寅卻起甲己之年丙為首,是丙寅丁卯爐中火,卻去火局尋某日生期起紫微帝王,

TranslationFor example, for someone born in a Jia year with the Life Palace placed in Yin, set the stem of the Yin palace by 'in Jia and Ji years, Bing comes first', so the Yin palace is Bing Yin; the Na Yin of Bing Yin and Ding Mao is fire in the furnace, so it is the fire bureau. Then, in the fire bureau, find the day of birth and place Zi Wei, the emperor star.

甲己之年丙為首
For people born in Jia or Ji years, the stem of the Yin palace starts at Bing; see The Five Elements Bureau and the Sixty Na Yin.
火局
The fire bureau: Fire 6. The Na Yin element of the Life Palace's stem and branch fixes the Five Elements Bureau.
Commentary

This segment breaks fixing the bureau into three steps, none of which can be skipped. First, use the year stem to set the stem of the Yin palace (in a Jia year, Yin is Bing). Then lay the stems forward to the Life Palace and read its stem and branch. Finally, look up the Na Yin element of that pair. The Quan Shu's example has the Life Palace in Yin, so the first step already gives Bing Yin. If the Life Palace is not in Yin, keep laying out the stems. For example, born in a Geng Wu year with the Life Palace in Chou: in a Geng year, Yin starts at Wu (戊), so Wu Yin, Ji Mao and so on run all the way to Wu Zi at Zi and Ji Chou at Chou; the Na Yin of Ji Chou is thunderbolt fire, so this too is Fire 6.

The palaces that trip people up are Zi and Chou. They come after Hai, and the stems continue on from there; they are not counted backward from Yin. Every palace on a Xingge chart shows its stem and branch, and the Five Elements Bureau is shown on the chart too, so you can check your own working against them.

✎ Note

6如是正月初一生者是火局,酉宮起初一日,就從酉宮起紫微,數無差遲,若錯了則失之毫釐,差之千里矣。

TranslationIf born on the first day of the first month in the fire bureau, the first day of the fire bureau is in the You palace, so start Zi Wei from You; count this way and there will be no mistake. If it is started wrong, a hair's breadth off at the start becomes a thousand miles off in the end.

失之毫釐,差之千里
A tiny difference at the start becomes a huge one later.
Commentary

The Quan Shu only gives the answer here (the first day in the fire bureau is You); the method is hidden in the five bureau charts among the setup charts. The 'make-up method' often taught today reproduces those charts. Divide the birth day by the bureau number; if it does not divide evenly, add to the day until it does, and the amount added is the 'borrowed number'. Take Fire 6 and the first day: adding 5 brings it to 6, and the quotient is 1. Count the quotient from the Yin palace (1 stops at Yin itself); the borrowed number 5 is odd, so step back 5 palaces: Chou, Zi, Hai, Xu, You. Zi Wei is in You. If the borrowed number is even, step forward instead.

'A hair's breadth becomes a thousand miles' is no figure of speech: if Zi Wei is wrong, the whole set of fourteen main stars is wrong with it. Anyone unsure of their birth hour can read the Quan Shu's Getting the Birth Hour Right. For the full Fire 6 table, see the Fire 6 chart for placing Zi Wei.

安十二宮例 男女俱從逆轉切忌莫順去

8一 命宮、二兄弟、三妻妾、四子女、五財帛、六疾厄、七遷移、八奴僕、九官祿、十田宅、十一福德、十二父母

TranslationThe order of the twelve palaces, starting from the Life Palace: one, Life; two, Siblings; three, Spouse; four, Children; five, Wealth; six, Health; seven, Travel; eight, Friends; nine, Career; ten, Property; eleven, Fortune; twelve, Parents. The note under the heading: for men's and women's charts alike, lay them out turning backward from the Life Palace; never lay them out forward.

妻妾
Wives and concubines: the old name of the Spouse Palace.
奴僕
Servants: the old name of the Friends Palace.
Commentary

The twelve palaces are laid out counterclockwise from the Life Palace: Life, Siblings, Spouse and on to Parents, so the Parents Palace lands on the neighbour of the Life Palace in the forward direction. Xingge's square chart runs the same way: the forward neighbour of the Life Palace is the Parents Palace and the backward neighbour is the Siblings Palace. Which way the Decade Luck starts and how flanking palaces are read later on are all based on this orientation.

On the names: the Quan Shu's 「妻妾」 is the Spouse Palace and 「奴僕」 is Xingge's Friends Palace. Elsewhere the Quan Shu also calls the Parents Palace 'Appearance'; the Zi Wei question, for instance, says Zi Wei 「落疾厄、兄弟、奴僕、相貌、四陷宮」 (see the original). When you meet the 'Appearance Palace', it means the Parents Palace.

FAQ

How is the Life Palace placed in Zi Wei Dou Shu?

The method in the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu is: start the first month at the Yin palace and count forward to the lunar birth month; from that palace start the Zi hour and count backward to the birth hour, and that palace is the Life Palace. For example, born in the first month in the Chou hour: the Zi hour starts at Yin, one step backward reaches Chou, so the Life Palace is in Chou.

How is the Body Palace worked out?

From the same starting point as the Life Palace: start the Zi hour at the palace of the birth month, but count forward to the birth hour instead. That is the Body Palace. So for people born in the Zi or Wu hour, the Life Palace and Body Palace are the same palace.

How is a chart set up for someone born in a leap month?

The Quan Shu says that someone born in the leap first month should 「在二月內起安身命」, and every leap month follows this example: the whole leap month counts as the next month. Xingge instead counts days up to the 15th of a leap month as that month and days from the 16th on as the next month, which differs from the Quan Shu.

What is the order of the twelve palaces?

Laid out backward from the Life Palace: Life, Siblings, Spouse (妻妾 in the Quan Shu), Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends (奴僕 in the Quan Shu), Career, Property, Fortune, Parents. The Quan Shu notes specially that for men and women alike the order runs backward and must never run forward.
