Placing the Auspicious Stars, Tian Ma and Lu Cun

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This chapter collects five placement rhymes, each with a note under its heading saying what it is placed by:

  • Wen Chang and Wen Qu: by birth hour. Wen Chang starts the Zi hour at Xu and counts backward; Wen Qu starts the Zi hour at Chen and counts forward.
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi: by birth month. Zuo Fu starts the first month at Chen and counts forward; You Bi starts the first month at Xu and counts backward.
  • Tian Kui and Tian Yue: by the Heavenly Stem of the birth year, in the rhyme 「甲戊庚牛羊」, which uses the twelve zodiac animals for the Earthly Branches.
  • Tian Ma: by the Earthly Branch of the birth year; each of the four trine groups of years has its own horse position.
  • Lu Cun: by the Heavenly Stem of the birth year.

The animals in the rhymes are read as branches: ox Chou, goat Wei, rat Zi, monkey Shen, tiger Yin, horse Wu, hare Mao, snake Si, pig Hai, rooster You, dog Xu. The base text has several character errors: 「免」 should be the character for hare, 「豬狗」 should be pig and rooster (in Bing and Ding years the patron stars are in Hai and You), 「戍」 should be 戌, and 「逆至正月」 in the You Bi line should read 'backward to the birth month'.

Xingge places all of these stars exactly as the Quan Shu does, except for the order of Tian Kui and Tian Yue in Xin years (see segment 9).

安文昌文曲星訣 論本生時

2子時戌上起文昌,逆到生時是貴鄉,文曲數從辰上起,順到生時是本鄉。

TranslationFor the Zi hour, start Wen Chang at Xu; count backward to the birth hour, and that is its noble place. Wen Qu is counted starting from Chen; count forward to the birth hour, and that is its home.

Commentary

Wen Chang and Wen Qu are placed by hour, in opposite directions: Wen Chang runs backward from Xu, Wen Qu forward from Chen. Since one runs backward and the other forward from symmetric starting points, the two are always mirror images across the Chou-Wei axis. People born in the Mao or You hour have Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the same palace (both in Wei for the Mao hour, both in Chou for the You hour), which is the pattern Chang Qu Tong Gong; for the Zi and Wu hours one is in Chen and the other in Xu, directly opposite each other.

On a Xingge chart these two stars are listed beside the main stars with their brightness in the small text; the brightness follows the Miao-Wang table in the setup charts.

✎ Note

3文昌星從戌上起子時,就在戌宮安,若丑時逆至酉宮安之。

TranslationWen Chang starts the Zi hour at Xu: born in the Zi hour, it is placed in the Xu palace; born in the Chou hour, go back one palace to You and place it there.

Commentary

Working out the full table by this method (hour, then Wen Chang's palace): Zi-Xu, Chou-You, Yin-Shen, Mao-Wei, Chen-Wu, Si-Si, Wu-Chen, Wei-Mao, Shen-Yin, You-Chou, Xu-Zi, Hai-Hai. Notice that for people born in the Si or Hai hour, Wen Chang falls in the palace with the same name as the hour.

The Quan Shu says Wen Chang 「逆到生時是貴鄉」. On the chart, this means that Wen Chang in the Life Palace or its San Fang governs study, examinations, paperwork and order; see What Does Wen Chang Govern? for more.

✎ Note

4文曲星從辰上起子時,如人生子時就在辰宮安,若丑時順去巳宮安之,餘宮仿此。

TranslationWen Qu starts the Zi hour at Chen: someone born in the Zi hour has it in the Chen palace; born in the Chou hour, go forward one palace to Si and place it there. The other hours follow the same way.

Commentary

Wen Qu starts the Zi hour at Chen and runs forward: Zi-Chen, Chou-Si, Yin-Wu, Mao-Wei, Chen-Shen, Si-You, Wu-Xu, Wei-Hai, Shen-Zi, You-Chou, Xu-Yin, Hai-Mao. Set it beside Wen Chang's positions from the previous segment and you can see that Wen Chang and Wen Qu can only flank Chou or Wei. Born in the Yin hour, Wen Chang is in Shen and Wen Qu in Wu, flanking Wei; born in the Shen hour, Wen Chang is in Yin and Wen Qu in Zi, flanking Chou. So Chang Qu Jia only occurs for people whose Life Palace is in Chou or Wei; no other palace can be flanked by Wen Chang and Wen Qu.

安左輔右弼星訣 論本生月

6左輔正月起於辰,順逢生月是貴方,右弼正月宮尋戌,逆至正月便調停。

TranslationZuo Fu starts the first month at Chen; counting forward to the birth month gives its noble place. You Bi looks for the first month at the Xu palace; counting backward to the birth month, it settles there.

Textual note: In 「逆至正月便調停」, the words 'first month' (正月) should, by the sense and by the explanation in the next segment, read 'birth month' (生月): You Bi starts the first month at Xu and counts backward to the birth month.

Commentary

Zuo Fu and You Bi are placed by birth month, with exactly the same structure as Wen Chang and Wen Qu: Zuo Fu runs forward from Chen and You Bi backward from Xu, so they too mirror each other across the Chou-Wei axis. Try it: born in the fourth month, Zuo Fu goes Chen, Si, Wu, Wei and You Bi goes Xu, You, Shen, Wei, so both are in Wei. Born in the tenth month, both are in Chou. Only these two months give Zuo You Tong Gong.

One reminder: Zuo Fu and You Bi go by the lunar month, so someone born in a leap month first has to decide which month counts (see segment 4 of Placing the Life and Body Palaces). The Quan Shu only says that a leap month counts as the next month when placing Life and Body; it does not say whether Zuo Fu and You Bi change month as well.

✎ Note

7左輔從辰上起正月順行,如正月生者就辰宮安之。二月在巳宮,右弼從戌宮逆轉如正月便成戌宮安之,二月在酉宮餘仿此。

TranslationZuo Fu starts the first month at Chen and runs forward: born in the first month, it is placed in the Chen palace; the second month, in the Si palace. You Bi starts the first month at the Xu palace and turns backward: born in the first month, it is placed in the Xu palace; the second month, in the You palace. The rest follow the same way.

Commentary

This segment gives the first and second months; carry on from there. Third month: Zuo Fu in Wu, You Bi in Shen. Fifth month: Zuo Fu in Shen, You Bi in Wu. Both times they flank Wei. Ninth month: Zuo Fu in Zi, You Bi in Yin; eleventh month: Zuo Fu in Yin, You Bi in Zi; both flank Chou. So Zuo You Jia, like flanking by Wen Chang and Wen Qu, only happens at Chou and Wei.

On a Xingge chart, Zuo Fu and You Bi appear among the minor stars beside the main stars, with no brightness. The Quan Shu sees Zuo Fu and You Bi as the ministers Zi Wei needs most; Zi Wei without them is a 'lonely ruler', see The Nature of Zi Wei.

安天魁天鉞訣 論本生年干

9甲戊庚牛羊,乙己鼠猴鄉,六辛逢虎馬,壬癸免蛇藏,丙丁豬狗位,此是貴人方。

TranslationPeople born in Jia, Wu or Geng years have Tian Kui and Tian Yue at Chou (ox) and Wei (goat); Yi or Ji years, at Zi (rat) and Shen (monkey); Xin years, at Yin (tiger) and Wu (horse); Ren or Gui years, at Mao (hare) and Si (snake); Bing or Ding years, at Hai (pig) and You (rooster). These are the places of the patron stars.

牛羊
Ox and goat: the rhyme uses zodiac animals for branches. Ox Chou, goat Wei, rat Zi, monkey Shen, tiger Yin, horse Wu, hare Mao, snake Si, pig Hai, rooster You. In the usual arrangement the first is Tian Kui and the second Tian Yue.
貴人
Patron stars: Tian Kui and Tian Yue together are called the Tian Yi patrons.

Textual note: In 「壬癸免蛇藏」, 「免」 should be the character for hare. 「丙丁豬狗位」 should read pig and rooster: in Bing and Ding years the patron stars are in Hai and You, not in Xu.

The Xingge approachFor Xin years the rhyme says 'tiger, horse'. Following the Kui-then-Yue order of the other lines, that puts Tian Kui in Yin and Tian Yue in Wu. Xingge puts Tian Kui in Wu and Tian Yue in Yin in Xin years, matching the common version of the rhyme, 'Xin years meet horse and tiger'. The two stars still fall in Yin and Wu; only Kui and Yue are swapped.

Commentary

The rhyme 「甲戊庚牛羊」 is exactly the same as the Tian Yi patrons of Zi Ping (Four Pillars) astrology; Dou Shu borrowed it directly. The base text's 「丙丁豬狗位」 should read pig and rooster (see the text note), and once it is corrected you can see that the rhyme never mentions Chen or Xu: Tian Kui and Tian Yue never fall in Chen or Xu. The ancients called Chen and Xu the net of heaven and the snare of earth, where patrons do not come.

In each line, the first animal is Tian Kui and the second Tian Yue. The Quan Shu and Xingge differ on the order for Xin years, see 'The Xingge approach' above; the two stars fall in the same palaces and only their names are swapped. On a Xingge chart both stars are listed among the minor stars; for their nature see What Do Tian Kui and Tian Yue Govern?.

✎ Note

10二星主科甲,身命若逢之,金榜提名之客。

TranslationThese two stars govern success in the examinations; if the Body or Life Palace meets them, the person's name goes up on the golden list.

科甲
Passing the imperial examinations.

Textual note: 「提名」 is usually written with the character for 'inscribe': the name inscribed on the list.

Commentary

「二星主科甲」 is what Kui and Yue meant in the old days: the imperial examinations depended on the examiners' favour, and Kui and Yue are exactly the patron stars. Today this can be read as tending to meet someone willing to promote you at exams and promotions, or receiving the care of elders and superiors.

As for the condition, the line only says the Body or Life Palace meets them; it does not require both stars, so the chart match counts either one sitting in the Life or Body Palace. When the two stars flank the Life Palace on either side, there is the separate idea of Kui Yue flanking the Life Palace. How far 'the golden list' really goes depends on the brightness of the Life Palace's main star and on whether Hua Ji or malefic stars share the palace; the Quan Shu never settles a pattern on one star alone.

安天馬星訣 論本生年支

12寅午戍人馬居申,申子辰人馬居寅,巳酉丑人馬居亥,亥卯未人馬居巳。

TranslationFor people born in Yin, Wu or Xu years, Tian Ma is in Shen; for Shen, Zi or Chen years, Tian Ma is in Yin; for Si, You or Chou years, in Hai; for Hai, Mao or Wei years, in Si.

Textual note: In the base text's 「寅午戍」, 「戍」 should be 戌.

Commentary

The rule behind Tian Ma is 'the palace opposite the birth point of the trine': Yin, Wu and Xu form the fire trine, fire's Chang Sheng (birth) point is Yin, and the palace opposite Yin is Shen, so the horse is in Shen. Shen, Zi and Chen form the water trine, whose Chang Sheng point is Shen; the opposite palace is Yin, so the horse is in Yin; the others follow likewise. That is why Tian Ma only falls in the four palaces Yin, Shen, Si and Hai, which the ancients called the four horse positions.

In practice: people born in a Zi year have Tian Ma in Yin, people born in a Wu year have it in Shen. On a Xingge chart Tian Ma is listed among the minor stars; switch to the Annual Luck and there is also an annual horse placed by that year's branch, using the same rhyme. For Tian Ma's nature see What Does Tian Ma Govern?.

✎ Note

13如安命在辰戌丑未,遇夫妻宮在寅申巳亥有天馬,若得同位或三方照臨,必主男為官女封贈,不然祿馬交馳亦吉。

TranslationFor example, if the Life Palace is placed in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei, the Spouse Palace falls in Yin, Shen, Si or Hai. If Tian Ma is in the Spouse Palace and something also joins it in the same palace or shines in on it from the San Fang, it surely means the man becomes an official and the woman receives an honorary title; even if not, Lu and the horse running together is also lucky.

封贈
An honorary title granted by the court to a woman because of her husband's or son's office.
祿馬交馳
Lu and the horse running together: Lu Cun or Hua Lu sharing a palace with Tian Ma, or meeting it.
Commentary

The reasoning runs like this: with the Life Palace in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei, the Spouse Palace, two palaces back, is always in Yin, Shen, Si or Hai, and Tian Ma only ever lands in those four, so only charts like these can have Tian Ma in the Spouse Palace. 「同位或三方照臨」 does not say what shares the palace with Tian Ma; from the following 'Lu and the horse running together', it should mean Lu Cun or Hua Lu.

An example: born in a Jia Chen year with the Life Palace in Chen, the Spouse Palace is in Yin. In a Jia year Lu Cun is in Yin, and in a Chen year Tian Ma is also in Yin, so Lu Cun and Tian Ma share the Spouse Palace: that is Lu Ma Jiao Chi. The old 'the man becomes an official, the woman receives a title' means status brought by the spouse; today it can be read as a capable spouse with plenty of drive in making money. The chart match only marks Tian Ma in the Spouse Palace; whether Lu meets it as well you need to check yourself.

安祿存星訣 論本生年干

15甲生祿存在寅宮,乙生在卯丙戊巳,丁己祿存停午方,庚祿居申辛祿酉,壬祿在亥癸祿子。

TranslationFor people born in a Jia year, Lu Cun is in the Yin palace; Yi years, in Mao; Bing and Wu years, in Si; for Ding and Ji years Lu Cun stops at Wu; Geng years, Lu Cun is in Shen, Xin years in You; Ren years in Hai, Gui years in Zi.

Commentary

Lu Cun's position is each stem's 'Lin Guan' (coming of age) point: Jia wood comes of age at Yin, Yi wood at Mao, Bing and Wu at Si, Ding and Ji at Wu, and so on, following the twelve life stages of the Five Elements. It follows that Lu Cun never falls in the four tomb palaces Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, and that it is always flanked by Qing Yang on one side and Tuo Luo on the other (see Placing Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing), hence the saying that Qing Yang and Tuo Luo flank Lu.

On a Xingge chart Lu Cun carries no brightness, because in the Quan Shu's Miao-Wang table Lu Cun is Miao in every palace it can reach. For Lu Cun's nature see The Nature of Lu Cun.

FAQ

How are Wen Chang and Wen Qu placed?

By birth hour. Wen Chang starts the Zi hour at Xu and counts backward to the birth hour; Wen Qu starts the Zi hour at Chen and counts forward to the birth hour. Born in the Chou hour, for example, Wen Chang is in You and Wen Qu in Si.

How are Tian Kui and Tian Yue placed?

By the birth-year stem: in Jia, Wu and Geng years they are in Chou and Wei; Yi and Ji years, Zi and Shen; Xin years, Yin and Wu; Ren and Gui years, Mao and Si; Bing and Ding years, Hai and You. In the usual arrangement the first is Tian Kui and the second Tian Yue. The Quan Shu says the two stars govern success in the examinations, and someone with them in the Body or Life Palace is a person whose name goes up on the golden list.

Which palace is Tian Ma in?

By the birth-year branch: for people born in Yin, Wu or Xu years Tian Ma is in Shen; Shen, Zi or Chen years, in Yin; Si, You or Chou years, in Hai; Hai, Mao or Wei years, in Si. Tian Ma only ever lands in the four palaces Yin, Shen, Si and Hai.

How is Lu Cun placed?

By the birth-year stem: Jia years in Yin, Yi years in Mao, Bing and Wu years in Si, Ding and Ji years in Wu, Geng years in Shen, Xin years in You, Ren years in Hai, Gui years in Zi. Qing Yang and Tuo Luo are then placed one palace after and one palace before Lu Cun.
