What Does Tian Ji Govern?

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 1: Rhapsodies, questions on the stars, and chart patterns · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the second question in the Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun (Questions and Answers on the Stars) in volume one of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu: 「問天機所主如何?」, what does Tian Ji govern? Tian Ji is the good star of the Southern Dipper, and its transformed qi is 'goodness'. The Quan Shu sees it as clever, adaptable and kind at heart, and often links it to religion and spiritual practice. The chapter speaks in four voices:

  • The answer (segments 1 to 2): Tian Ji's nature; the person is diligent in worshipping the Buddha, respects the six relations and suits the woods and streams, monks and Daoist priests. With Tian Ji guarding the Body Palace and meeting Tian Liang, there is sure to be a high skill.
  • Master Xiyi (segment 3): meeting Tian Liang, Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, it is good in civil and military careers alike; fallen and with the four malefic stars, it is a low pattern. For a woman, lucky stars embracing it help her husband and children, while Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Hua Ji clashing and breaking it mean lowliness, disability and harm to family.
  • The verse (segments 5 to 9): a five-character mnemonic covering Tian Ji with Ju Men as a military post, Tian Ji with Tian Liang as a monk or Daoist, a woman meeting Tian Ji and Tian Liang who is 「性巧必淫奔」, and Tian Ji in its temple in Chen, Xu, Zi and Wu.
  • Master Yuchan (segment 10): Tian Ji helps the emperor carry out his orders; with lucky stars it brings wealth and rank, and even with clashing malefic stars the person loves goodness.

One thing to keep in mind: the chapter says several times that Tian Ji 「宜於僧道」, suits monks and Daoist priests, reflecting the old view of Tian Ji as a thoughtful star close to religion. The verse's line on women is very harsh; the translation follows the original as written.

TranslationThe answer: Tian Ji belongs to wood. It is the third star of the Southern Dipper, a good star that adds to one's years. Its transformed qi is called goodness; it also acts fittingly when it holds its ground, and resolves the favour and disfavour of the stars. It sets a fixed measure for a person's fate; when it meets all the lucky stars gathered, everything is good. The person is diligent in worshipping the Buddha and respectful toward the six relations, suited to the woods and streams and suited to monks and Daoist priests. He has no cruel or unkind heart, and has a mind quick and ready to adapt; he can see the fish in a deep pool, and does things with method.

益算
To add to one's reckoned years: to lengthen life.
化氣
Transformed qi: the quality a star's nature turns into, as Tian Ji's is goodness and Zi Wei's is honour.
林泉
Woods and streams: a life of retreat in the mountains.
Seeing the fish in a deep pool: a figure for sharp observation and seeing into hidden things.
Commentary

Tian Ji's core comes down to two words: goodness and wit. Its transformed qi is goodness, so most of this passage is about character: respecting the six relations, worshipping the Buddha, having no cruel heart. The 'wit' is the quick, adaptable mind that sees the fish in a deep pool, meaning close observation and a fast-turning head. It belongs to wood, and wood stands for growth and benevolence, which fits with the character of goodness.

「解諸星之順逆」 says Tian Ji can mediate conflicts between other stars, and this relates to its place in the arrangement of the main stars: Tian Ji always sits right next to Zi Wei, in the next palace counting backward from it, the adviser closest to the emperor's seat. 「宜於僧道」 and 「利於林泉」 were praise for high-mindedness in old times, not a slight; today they can be read as suiting research, planning, religion or work that needs thinking alone, not as a sure sign of leaving the household life. For the star's basic nature, compare Tian Ji.

TranslationFor a woman's chart, meeting it is a blessing; meeting lucky stars it is lucky, meeting malefic stars it is bad. If it guards the Body Palace and also meets Tian Liang, the person is sure to carry a high skill. Students should study this closely.

Commentary

This passage holds two separate verdicts. The first, 「女命遇之為福」, is one of the rare places where the Quan Shu says outright that a main star favours a woman's chart, in line with segment 3's 'helps her husband and children' and segment 10's 'for a woman, mostly blessings and long life'. But segment 7 says a woman with Tian Ji and Tian Liang in the same palace 「性巧必淫奔」, so the book's verdict on Tian Ji in a woman's chart is not consistent; it depends on the stars it is paired with.

The second, 「守於身,更逢天梁,必有高藝隨身」, requires Tian Ji in the Body Palace with Tian Liang in the same palace or its San Fang Si Zheng. Tian Ji stands for thinking and Tian Liang for experience and maturity; together they mean making one's way by a special skill, such as technical expertise, medicine, law or consulting. Tian Ji and Tian Liang share a palace in Chen and Xu; in other positions they mostly have to meet from the San Fang Si Zheng.

TranslationMaster Xiyi said: Tian Ji is a star that lengthens life. If it guards the Body or Life Palace, the person is out of the ordinary. Meeting Tian Liang, Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, as a civil official he is pure and eminent, as a military officer loyal and good. If it is in a fallen place with the four malefic stars clashing and breaking it, it is a low pattern, and he should live the quiet life of a monk or Daoist priest. Whenever either of the two luck periods meets it, one builds up the family, founds an enterprise and makes changes. For a woman with lucky stars embracing it, it means helping her husband and benefiting her children; with Hua Quan or Hua Lu she is a noble lady. If it falls in a bad position with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Hua Ji clashing and breaking it, it means lowliness, disability, and harm to and from family.

四殺
The four malefic stars: Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing.
二限
The two luck periods: Decade Luck and Minor Luck.
Helping her husband and benefiting her children.
落局
Falling into a bad position; here, being in a fallen palace.
Commentary

Master Xiyi divides Tian Ji into an upper and a lower pattern. The upper one is Tian Ji guarding the Life Palace and meeting Tian Liang, Zuo Fu and You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu: 「文為清顯,武為忠良」. The lower one is Tian Ji in a fallen place with the four malefic stars clashing and breaking it: 「當為僧道之清閑」. On a Xingge chart Tian Ji is Xian only in Chou and Wei, so the lower pattern's condition is narrower than one might think.

「凡入二限逢之,興家創業更改」 deserves attention: the keynote of Tian Ji in a luck period is change, neither lucky nor unlucky in itself, but a shift from the status quo. Today it can be read as a time of changing jobs, moving house, switching fields or starting something new. The last line on women, 「落局羊陀火忌沖破,主下賤殘疾刑剋」, is very heavy as written, and its condition is a fallen Tian Ji plus several malefic stars and Hua Ji; seeing only one or two of them does not reach that level.

TranslationTian Ji is the master of the Siblings Palace, a proper star of the Southern Dipper. In what it does it has strategy, and its nature is most brilliant; what it does is of the highest taste, and it can also be counted among the heroes.

Master of the Siblings Palace: the Quan Shu makes Tian Ji the main star of that palace.
操略
Strategy, schemes.
Commentary

The verse's first line, 「天機兄弟主」, says that in the Quan Shu's division of labour Tian Ji is master of the Siblings Palace, just as Zi Wei is master of the Career Palace and Tai Yang is also a master of the Career Palace. This is an old system pairing stars with palaces, mostly unused in reading today, but it says something about Tian Ji's nature: siblings are peers and helpers, and Tian Ji is likewise Zi Wei's adviser, not a ruler.

「作事有操略,稟性最高明」 affirms Tian Ji's intelligence. 「亦可作群英」 uses 'can also', a guarded tone: Tian Ji's intelligence needs lucky stars to rise above others, and cleverness alone is not enough. This fits the overall assessment in The Nature of Tian Ji.

TranslationMeeting lucky stars, it means enjoying blessings; if it fits a pattern, one sits in the Hanlin Academy. In the same position as Ju Men, one holds a military post that holds down the frontier; but it also needs Hua Quan and a malefic star before one can win merit and fame.

翰林
The Hanlin Academy, the office of literary officials attending the emperor; by extension, a pure and eminent civil post.
The frontier.
Commentary

「巨門同一位」 is Tian Ji and Ju Men in the same palace, which happens only in Mao and You: the Ju Ji Tong Lin (Ju Men and Tian Ji arriving together) pattern. Here it is said to mean 「武職壓邊庭」, but with a condition attached, 「亦要權逢殺,方可立功名」: there must be Hua Quan and malefic stars too. The old logic is that both Tian Ji and Ju Men lean toward talk and scheming, and need the hardness of a power star and a malefic star to win merit in a military post.

The Quan Shu's verdicts on Tian Ji with Ju Men vary a good deal: the Gu Sui Fu says 「巨機同宮公卿之位」 (see Gu Sui Fu), the chapter on stars in strong positions says Ju Men and Tian Ji in Mao bring great fortune to people born in Xin or Yi years, while the chapter on stars in fallen positions lists Tian Ji with Ju Men as a broken pattern. The usual summary is that Mao is better and You worse, and the year-stem transformations matter too.

TranslationIn the same position as Tian Liang, one is sure to become a Daoist or a monk; a woman who meets this is clever by nature and is sure to elope in lewdness. With Tian Tong, Wen Chang and Wen Qu gathering and embracing it, it means glory and honour.

In old usage, a woman uniting with a man or running off with him without a matchmaker or her parents' consent.
Gathering and embracing from the San Fang.
Commentary

This passage puts three combinations together. Tian Ji and Tian Liang share a palace only in Chen and Xu, and 「定作道與僧」 carries on segment 1's high-minded, religious character; the Quan Shu's Ten Grades chapter also lists Tian Ji and Tian Liang among the star groups for monks and Daoists. For a woman with Tian Ji and Tian Liang together, 「性巧必淫奔」 is a very heavy verdict as written; the old reasoning was probably that Tian Ji is clever and changeable and Tian Liang careless of small rules, which a society bound by ritual saw as failing the standards of the women's quarters.

Put in present-day terms, it describes a quick mind and strong views, not following the path set by family or society, and likely to make her own choices in love. The last two lines, 「天同與昌曲,聚拱主華榮」, are the lucky side. Tian Tong always sits in Tian Ji's trine, so 'Tian Tong gathering and embracing' is almost a fixed condition; what really needs checking is whether Wen Chang and Wen Qu come in.

TranslationIn Chen, Xu, Zi or Wu it enters its temple, and there are honours. If it is in Yin or Mao, with the four malefic stars and Po Jun (Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing and Ling Xing), if it meets these malefic stars,

Commentary

The first line, 「辰戌子午地,入廟有功名」, does not quite match the brightness table Xingge uses: Tian Ji is Miao in Zi and Wu but only Li in Chen and Xu. The brightness table in volume two of the Quan Shu marks it that way itself, so this is a discrepancy between the Quan Shu's verse and its own table; a reader who sees Tian Ji marked Li in Chen or Xu on the chart need not suspect a mistake.

The second half, 「若在寅卯位,四殺並破軍」, should be read with the next segment. Tian Ji is De in Yin and Wang in Mao, not weak in itself; the bad signs come from the four malefic stars. As for Po Jun, under the placement rules Po Jun never enters Tian Ji's San Fang Si Zheng, so 'and Po Jun' more likely refers loosely to a draining star, or to a star added by a luck period.

Translationthere are disasters and false alarms. Meeting Wu Qu, An (Ju Men), Lian Zhen and Po Jun, both eyes lack light. When the two luck periods reach this star, things are sure to change.

暗
An (darkness): Ju Men, whose transformed qi is darkness.
Commentary

Continuing the last segment: Tian Ji in Yin or Mao meeting malefic stars brings disasters and false alarms. 'False alarm' is apt: Tian Ji governs the nerves and worry, and what malefic stars stir up is mostly fright and anxiety, not necessarily anything major.

「武暗廉破會,兩目少光明」 has a problem on the chart: under the placement rules Wu Qu, Lian Zhen and Po Jun never fall in Tian Ji's San Fang Si Zheng; only Ju Men (darkness) can share its palace or meet it. So the line hardly works on a natal chart, and more likely refers to stars stacked up by luck periods, or speaks loosely of Tian Ji meeting the moving versions of these stars. The last line, 「二限臨此宿,事必有變更」, again stresses that Tian Ji in a luck period means change, echoing segment 3's 'builds up the family, founds an enterprise and makes changes'.

TranslationMaster Yuchan said: Tian Ji is a good star of the Southern Dipper, so its transformed qi is called goodness. It assists the emperor in carrying out his orders, and resolves the rebellion of the malefic stars. It sets a fixed measure in a person's fate: meeting lucky stars gathered, there is wealth and rank; meeting clashing and malefic stars, the person surely still loves goodness. Filial and dutiful toward the six relations, diligent in worshipping the Buddha, he does nothing unkind or unrighteous, and has a mind that is perceptive and adaptable. For a woman's chart it mostly means blessings and long life. In Miao or Wang it has strength; in a fallen place it has none.

逆節
Rebellion, defiance.
Commentary

Master Yuchan adds one more angle: 「佐帝令以行事」. Tian Ji is the adviser who carries out Zi Wei's orders, so its goodness is the assisting kind, good at planning, executing and coordinating, not at sitting in charge and giving orders. This also explains why Tian Ji brings wealth and rank only with lucky stars gathered, and why, alone in the Life Palace, it is often read as clever but given to worry.

「若逢沖殺亦必好善」 is where Tian Ji differs from the other main stars: other stars turn bad when they meet malefic stars, but Tian Ji meeting them still loves goodness, only with reduced ability. The last line, 「廟旺有力,陷地無力」, is about strength, not good and evil. The brightness in the small text beside Tian Ji on a Xingge chart is the strength or weakness meant here. For Tian Ji's transformations, see pages such as Tian Ji Hua Lu.
