The Nature of Huo Xing
〈火星性情〉
The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation
Introduction
This is Huo Xing in the 'natures of the stars' section of volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, a very short chapter. Huo Xing is a floating star of the Southern Dipper and one of the Six Malefic Stars.
- General nature (segments 1 to 4): Huo Xing is hard and strong and stands out from others; lips, teeth and limbs are injured, the hair is unlike other people's, and the looks are unusual. It is bad in every palace; only sharing a palace with Tan Lang in its temple or Wang does it win merit on the frontier any day now, a wealth and office pattern, what was later called the 'Huo Tan pattern'. It favours people born in the southeast and not those born in the northwest; with Qing Yang in the same palace, there is disaster from infancy and loneliness, and the child should only be adopted out, fostered by the mother's family, or given other parents. The passage on women is very harsh in the original.
- Luck verses, two: a luck period reaching Huo Xing in a favourable position fills the house with joy; Huo Xing is perverse, and even with nothing amiss stirs up a lawsuit.
Segment 4, which begins 「寅午戌人宜,申子辰人陷」, uses 人, which literally means the birth-year branch; but its grouping is the same as volume three's brightness table for Huo Xing (Miao in Yin, Wu and Xu, Xian in Shen, Zi and Chen, De in Si, You and Chou, Li in Hai, Mao and Wei), so some read it as the palace Huo Xing sits in. The verses that treat Huo Xing and Ling Xing together are in the next chapter, The Nature of Ling Xing.
1火星,南斗浮星。性剛強出眾,唇齒四肢有傷,毛髮有異,形容各別。諸宮不美,惟貪狼廟旺同度,指日立邊功,為財官格,
TranslationHuo Xing is a floating star of the Southern Dipper. Its nature is hard and strong and stands out from others; lips, teeth and limbs are injured, the hair is unusual, and the looks are unlike others'. In every palace it is bad; only sharing a degree with Tan Lang in its temple or Wang does it win merit on the frontier any day now, a wealth and office pattern,
- 浮星
- Floating star: the Quan Shu's term for malefic and helper stars, as opposed to the main stars.
- 立邊功
- To win military merit on the frontier.
This chapter is short and has one key point: 「諸宮不美,惟貪狼廟旺同度」. Huo Xing is placed by the year branch and the hour and has no fixed relation to Tan Lang, so whether the two share a palace depends on the individual chart; later writers call it the Huo Tan pattern, which means a sudden rise. A verse in What Does Huo Xing Govern? says 「若得貪狼會,旺地貴無倫,封侯居上將,勳業著邊庭」 (What Does Huo Xing Govern?). 'Merit on the frontier' meant winning glory in border wars; today it can be read as quickly making a mark in a new market or field. The description of looks (injured lips, teeth and limbs, unusual hair) belongs to the old lore of form and character and can be taken as traditional background.
2利東南生人不利西北生人,及喜寅卯巳午生人為禍較輕,更與擎羊同垣,則襁褓災厄,孤剋下局,只宜過房由外家寄養,或重拜父母方可。
TranslationIt favours people born in the southeast and not those born in the northwest, and it likes people born in Yin, Mao, Si and Wu years, for whom the harm is lighter. If it shares a palace with Qing Yang as well, there is disaster in swaddling clothes, loneliness and harm to kin, a low pattern; the child should only be adopted out and fostered by the mother's family, or take other parents, and then it can be.
- 襁褓
- Swaddling clothes: infancy.
- 過房
- To be adopted out to another family.
- 外家
- The mother's family, the maternal grandparents' home.
The directional condition (good for the southeast, bad for the northwest) concerns the birthplace and cannot be seen on a Xingge chart. In the year-branch condition, 'people born in Yin, Mao, Si and Wu years suffer less', Yin and Mao are wood and Si and Wu fire; wood feeds fire and fire adds to fire, so Huo Xing was thought to run more smoothly in these years. The second half, sharing a palace with Qing Yang, is Huo Xing and Qing Yang in one degree, fire stacked on punishment, with disaster from infancy. What Does Huo Xing Govern? likewise says 「更與羊陀會,襁褓必災迍,過房出外養,二姓可延生」 (What Does Huo Xing Govern?). Adoption and fostering with the mother's family were old customs for helping a child grow up safely; today they can be read as being looked after by grandparents or relatives in early childhood.
3女命心毒內狠外虛狡詐,凌夫剋子,不守婦道,多是非,淫欲下賤。
TranslationA woman's chart: a poisonous heart, cruel within and hollow without, crafty and deceitful; she oppresses her husband and harms her children, does not keep a wife's proper conduct, has many quarrels, and is lustful and base.
The passage on a woman's Huo Xing sets no condition and is negative throughout: a poisonous heart, crafty, oppressing her husband and harming her children, lustful and base. This is the Quan Shu's harshest kind of writing on women and malefic stars, and the meaning is kept as written. A verse in What Does Huo Xing Govern? does set a condition: 「女人旺地潔,陷地主邪淫」 (What Does Huo Xing Govern?); in a Wang position she is chaste. Reading the two together, the sensible course is to take the conditional version: a woman whose Huo Xing is in its temple or Wang (Yin, Wu, Xu) is not judged by this passage. As a temperament: quick, direct and ready to collide, easily drawn into conflict in relationships.
4寅午戌人宜,申子辰人陷災吝困頓,巳酉丑人得地吉,亥卯未人利益,吉多發福。
TranslationFor people of Yin, Wu and Xu it is suitable; for people of Shen, Zi and Chen it is fallen, with disaster, trouble and hardship; for people of Si, You and Chou it has its place and is lucky; for people of Hai, Mao and Wei it is beneficial, and with many lucky stars it brings fortune.
- 寅午戌人
- Literally people born in Yin, Wu or Xu years; but the grouping matches volume three's brightness for Huo Xing palace by palace, so some read it as Huo Xing sitting in Yin, Wu or Xu.
- 吝
- Regret, things going badly.
As the note points out, the four groups here are exactly Huo Xing's brightness by palace: Xingge also marks it Miao in Yin, Wu and Xu, De in Si, You and Chou, Li in Hai, Mao and Wei, and Xian in Shen, Zi and Chen. So this passage very probably once spoke of which group of palaces Huo Xing sits in and was later written as 'people of such and such'. Another possibility is that Huo Xing is counted from the year branch: for Yin, Wu and Xu years it starts from Chou, for Shen, Zi and Chen years from Yin, so the year branch really does affect where Huo Xing lands, and the ancients may have mixed the two ideas. When checking a chart, the brightness Xingge marks is the most direct guide; 'with many lucky stars it brings fortune' is a reminder that Huo Xing's own brightness is only the starting point, and the number of lucky stars in the San Fang decides the outcome.
火星入限吉凶訣:
6火星得地限宮逢,喜氣盈門百事通,仕宦逢之皆發福,常人得此財豐隆。
TranslationWhen the luck-period palace meets Huo Xing in a favourable position, joy fills the house and everything goes through; officials who meet it all prosper, and ordinary people who get it have abundant wealth.
- 限宮
- The palace reached by the Decade Luck or Minor Luck.
Huo Xing in a favourable position entering the luck period: joy fills the house, everything goes through, officials prosper, ordinary people grow rich. Huo Xing's favourable and temple positions are Yin, Wu, Xu and Si, You, Chou. Huo Xing's gift is speed: things arrive fast and are done fast. A luck period reaching a well-placed Huo Xing suits seizing opportunities that appear suddenly. When reading the Decade Luck on Xingge, Huo Xing's position is fixed in the natal chart; see whether it falls in the decade's Life Palace or San Fang, then check the small brightness mark.
7火星一宿最乖張,無事官災鬧一場,剋害六親應不免,破財艱苦免恓惶。
TranslationThe star Huo Xing is the most perverse: even with nothing amiss it stirs up a lawsuit; harm to the six kin can hardly be escaped, with lost money, hardship and anxious distress.
- 恓惶
- Anxious and distressed, rushing about. 免恓惶 does not read smoothly and probably contains a miscopied character; it is translated by the sense, as 'cannot escape anxious distress'.
The opposite of the previous verse: Huo Xing is 'the most perverse', stirring up lawsuits from nothing, harming the six kin, bringing lost money and hardship. 「無事官災鬧一場」 captures it vividly: Huo Xing's rashness often turns small matters into big ones. The verse gives no brightness condition, but read with the previous one it must mean Huo Xing out of position or with many malefic stars. In such a period temper is the biggest risk; arguments, impulse spending and fast driving are typical Huo Xing events, and calming down before acting avoids most of them.

FAQ
What does Huo Xing govern in the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu?
The Quan Shu says Huo Xing is a floating star of the Southern Dipper, hard and strong and standing out from others, with injured lips, teeth and limbs, unusual hair and unusual looks. It is bad in every palace; only sharing a palace with Tan Lang in its temple or Wang can it soon win merit on the frontier, a wealth and office pattern.
Where does the Huo Tan pattern come from?
The Huo Xing chapter in volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu says 「諸宮不美,惟貪狼廟旺同度,指日立邊功,為財官格」: Huo Xing sharing a palace with Tan Lang in its temple or Wang quickly wins merit on the frontier. Later writers called Huo Xing with Tan Lang in one palace the 'Huo Tan pattern', and Ling Xing with Tan Lang the 'Ling Tan pattern'.
What does the Quan Shu say about Huo Xing in the same palace as Qing Yang?
The original says Huo Xing 「更與擎羊同垣,則襁褓災厄,孤剋下局,只宜過房由外家寄養,或重拜父母方可」: with Qing Yang in the same palace there is disaster in infancy, loneliness and harm to kin, a low pattern; the child should only be adopted out, fostered by the mother's family, or take foster parents.
Does 「寅午戌人宜,申子辰人陷」 refer to the birth year or the palace?
The original writes 人, literally people born in Yin, Wu or Xu years and in Shen, Zi or Chen years; but its grouping (good in Yin, Wu and Xu, fallen in Shen, Zi and Chen, in its place in Si, You and Chou, beneficial in Hai, Mao and Wei) matches volume three's brightness for Huo Xing palace by palace, so it is often read as Huo Xing sitting in these palaces. The Xingge chart marks the brightness of the palace Huo Xing sits in.
