Mu Yu (Bathing) is the second of the , right after Chang Sheng. A newborn needs its first bath, and the ancients used that image for the stage of "just emerged, still very tender." The San Ming Tong Hui, a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi (Four Pillars), puts it as "like a person bathed three days after birth." Things are still shifting and unsettled, and your attention is easily drawn to whatever is new. In a palace with Mu Yu, hold off on firm conclusions. To see which palace your Mu Yu is in, draw your chart.

How Mu Yu is placed

First find Chang Sheng from the , then count one palace on, by yin or yang and gender, and that is Mu Yu. Yang-year men and yin-year women count forward; yin-year men and yang-year women count backward:

Five Elements BureauForward (yang-year men, yin-year women)Backward (yin-year men, yang-year women)
Water 2, Earth 5YouWei
Wood 3ZiXu
Metal 4WuChen
Fire 6MaoChou

Counting forward, Mu Yu always lands in Zi, Wu, Mao or You. The original text of the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) says "count forward for men, backward for women." Xingge sets the direction by yin or yang and gender, so for people born in a yin year the direction is the reverse of the original text.

The classics call it the "place of defeat"

The Tai Wei Fu says:

Born in the place of defeat, what blossoms is empty flower.

(Quan Shu, volume one, Tai Wei Fu)

"The place of defeat" is the Mu Yu palace; the San Ming Tong Hui also says Mu Yu "is also called defeat." In volume three, the Lun Zhu Xing Tong Yuan section (on stars sharing a palace) annotates this line with an example: for people whose birth-year Na Yin element is Water or Earth, Chang Sheng is in Shen, so the next palace, You, is the place of defeat. If the Life Palace falls in You and also meets challenging stars like Qing Yang or Tuo Luo, the ancients said it opens fast and fades fast; with Lu Cun there, it turns auspicious instead. Another Tai Wei Fu line, "in the place of defeat, support works wonders," points the same way: in this tender stage, a helping hand makes a particularly clear difference.

Read for today, Mu Yu means "quick to start, quick to change": interests arrive in a rush, and the heat may not last. That isn't a bad thing. It's a reminder to give things a bit more time to settle.

In a few key palaces

  • Life Palace: strong curiosity and a love of novelty, and people find you charming. Enthusiasm can fade fast, so pick one or two things to stay with longer and you'll get more out of them.
  • Wealth Palace: spending follows your mood and the latest new thing, and income sources change often too. Set aside an untouched reserve first, then go try the new things.
  • Career Palace: at work you are often exploring and changing direction, and you learn quickly. Until you settle on a main thread, don't rush to compare results with others.
  • Spouse Palace: relationships start fast, and novelty draws you in easily. As time goes on, remember to bring your attention back to the person in front of you.
  • Health Palace: your routine tends to shift with your surroundings. Fix your daily rhythm first, and your energy steadies.

Mu Yu and Xian Chi are not the same

Mu Yu is often treated as a romance marker, and the source is Bazi: the Lun Xian Chi section of the San Ming Tong Hui says "the Mu Yu place of the Five Elements is called Xian Chi," and also that it is "also called the spirit of defeat, also called the peach blossom sha." On the Zi Wei chart, Xian Chi is a , placed by finding the Mu Yu position of the birth-year branch's trine element; for example, people born in a Yin, Wu or Xu year have it in Mao. The also include a Xian Chi. Mu Yu in the Twelve Life Stages, though, is placed by the Five Elements Bureau, a different method, so the two don't necessarily share a palace. When they do, you can read them together, but they speak to different things: Xian Chi to charm and attraction, Mu Yu to the pace of things still in flux.

Natal only, unchanged in each year

The Twelve Life Stages are a single natal set that never moves; when you read an , it is Jiang Qian and Sui Qian that change. For the full placement method, see the Twelve Life Stages overview.

FAQ

What does Mu Yu in the Life Palace mean?

It means strong curiosity, a love of novelty, quick adaptation to change, and enthusiasm that can fade fast. The classics call this palace the place of defeat, meaning quick to start and quick to change. Give things a little more time, and the staying power follows.

Why is Mu Yu called the place of defeat?

The Tai Wei Fu in volume one of the Quan Shu says "born in the place of defeat, what blossoms is empty flower," describing a just-emerged stage that opens fast and fades fast. It is about pace, not failure. The same text says that with auspicious stars to support it, the place of defeat does particularly well.

Is Mu Yu a romance star?

The Bazi book San Ming Tong Hui calls the Mu Yu place of the Five Elements Xian Chi, the peach blossom sha, which is why many people call it that. On the Zi Wei chart, though, Mu Yu in the Twelve Life Stages is placed by the Five Elements Bureau and describes things still in flux. Charm and attraction belong to Xian Chi, placed by the year branch. The two are placed differently, so read them separately.
