What is Yang?

Yang (Nurture) is the twelfth and last of the Twelve Life Stages (Chang Sheng). Once Tai has formed, it still has to be looked after and fed before it can grow, and that is Yang. Whichever palace has Yang, its affairs need to be grown slowly. With someone lending a hand there's plenty of staying power, so don't rush the harvest. The next palace after Yang is Chang Sheng again, so it is the preparation at the end of one round, before the next one sprouts. To see which palace your Yang is in, draw your chart.
How Yang is placed
First find Chang Sheng from the Five Elements Bureau, then count eleven palaces on, by yin or yang and gender, and that is Yang. Put another way, Yang sits in the palace just before Chang Sheng:
| Five Elements Bureau | Forward (yang-year men, yin-year women) | Backward (yin-year men, yang-year women) |
|---|---|---|
| Water 2, Earth 5 | Wei | You |
| Wood 3 | Xu | Zi |
| Metal 4 | Chen | Wu |
| Fire 6 | Chou | Mao |
Volume two of the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu) only gives the placement method, worded "count forward for men, backward for women." Xingge sets the direction by yin or yang and gender, so for people born in a yin year it runs opposite to the original text. The Quan Shu doesn't explain Yang on its own.
What Yang means: being cared for, and knowing how to care
Tai (Conception) forms inside; Yang begins taking in nourishment from outside. In a palace with Yang, things need time and resources to be watered slowly: with someone guiding and supporting you, progress is fast; pushing on alone, growth is slow. So the key phrase for Yang is "willing to be helped," and that includes being willing to spend time nurturing something yourself.
Where it tends to get stuck is impatience. Yang hasn't reached harvest time yet, and asking for results too early leaves you feeling you're always giving without seeing anything back. In fact the roots are already growing; they just haven't broken the surface.
In a few key palaces
- Life Palace: your growth needs someone to guide it, and with a good teacher or mentor you progress especially fast. Don't be shy about asking.
- Wealth Palace: wealth builds up over the long term, like growing a tree. Regular fixed contributions, grown slowly, suit you better than chasing short-term gains.
- Career Palace: your expertise needs time to be cultivated, suited to environments with mentorship and long-term learning. What you put in during the first few years comes back later.
- Spouse Palace: love is grown slowly, and caring for each other is at the heart of how you get along. Don't rush your partner for an answer right away.
- Health Palace: your energy is restored slowly through everyday care; small habits of sleep, food and exercise help more than one big overhaul.
Natal only, unchanged in each year
On the Xingge chart the Twelve Life Stages are a single natal set that never moves. When you switch to an Annual Luck, the sets that change to annual versions are the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian) and the Twelve Year Gods (Sui Qian). If the year's Life Palace reaches your natal Yang, that year's theme falls where things need cultivating, and it's a good time to find someone to guide you. The next stage is Chang Sheng (Birth); for the full placement method, see the Twelve Life Stages overview.
