Xian (Influence)

Xian (Influence) means feeling, being moved. How two people reach each other: sincerity, a humble stance and an open mind tend to draw a real response.

Cast your own hexagram

Xian (Influence) is a time when people can genuinely move each other. Lower your stance, empty your mind and be willing to listen, and a good response tends to come on its own. Staying upright matters most: rely on sincerity, not tactics.

Favorable

  • Show your interest openly
  • Lower your stance and listen
  • Talk marriage, meet the family
  • Do what you say

Avoid

  • Sweet talk with nothing behind it
  • Chasing when they're not answering
  • Following whatever others do
  • Sending test messages nonstop

Work and money

Job search
In interviews or raise talks, reading what the other side wants is the key. Xian (Influence) pictures the stronger side deferring to the other: ask and listen with a humble stance. Polished talk with no work to show tends to get seen through quickly.
Business
Good for partnerships and landing clients; deals close fast with people you click with. Still and glad, says the Tuan: settle your bottom line in advance and stay pleasant, but don't give away every term because they sound eager.
Money
Money comes through people and partnerships; those you click with can bring openings. If you feel like putting money in on instinct alone, check it out properly before you move.

Love and people

Single
Chemistry can spark quickly now. The first line, influence in the big toe, is only a first flutter. Ask them out, listen more than you talk, and meet two or three times before saying how you feel.
In a relationship
The Judgment calls marrying good fortune, so a steady couple can talk about moving in, meeting parents or setting a date. The third line warns against just following: say what life you want, too.
Getting back together
Possible, but only if they still feel something; one-sided heat moves no one. The fourth line's restless coming and going is a warning: stop sending test messages. Apologize sincerely once, say what changed, then give them time.
People and partnerships
The Image speaks of receiving others with an open mind. Clear space in your head and hear your partners out before pitching your own idea. Someone who just agrees with everything isn't really responding to you.

Daily life

Exams and study
You remember what genuinely moves you; cramming fades fast. Find an angle that grabs you, explain things to classmates, check ideas against real examples. Like the calves in the second line, don't rush into a course because others signed up.
Moving and travel
Travel tends to go smoothly, especially to see people you miss. With Gen (Mountain) and Dui (Lake), trips to hills and lakes suit. Before a move, meet the new roommate or landlord and sign only if you get along.
Body and mind
Other people's moods sway you easily; one remark can unsettle a whole day. Gen (Mountain) stands for stillness: keep a fixed stretch of time alone each day to quiet your mind. If sleep stays poor or something keeps feeling off, see a doctor.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
Fairly quick; if they feel it, they reply. The condition is that your message actually reaches them. A polite reply with no warmth means the feeling didn't land, and there is no need to keep waiting.
Disputes and lawsuits
The other side has room to soften, so negotiating beats going to court. The yielding is above, the firm below: if the stronger side drops its guard first and opens by naming what the other cares about, terms tend to come easier.
Lost things and people
Fairly likely to turn up. Gen (Mountain) is a gate and Dui (Lake) a mouth: check the doorway, the entryway, corners by stone, the sink, or a bag with an open top. A friend may have picked it up, so ask who was with you.

Making a decision

If you really want this and the other side is responding, go ahead. If the enthusiasm is all on your side and they aren't answering, wait.

If you are…

Someone chatting for weeks on a dating app without meeting

The spark Xian (Influence) speaks of is already there, so it is time to take it offline. Suggest something easy, like coffee or a gallery. When you meet, drop the rehearsed lines and talk the way you normally would.

An account executive pitching a new client for the first time

Xian (Influence) is about moving each other. Before the pitch, find out what keeps the client up at night. Open with their problem, then your solution. Keep a humble stance and adjust to their reactions instead of reading every slide.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

Success. Steadfastness pays. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

Lake over Mountain: Dui (Lake) above, Gen (Mountain) below. Dui is a lake and the youngest daughter; Gen is a mountain and the youngest son. A lake on a mountain soaks into the soil. The young man defers to the young woman and the two are moved by each other, so it is called Xian (Influence).

Six at the beginning

Influence in the big toe.

A first flicker of interest, or a first sniff of an opportunity; the feeling is still shallow. Watch how the other side responds before you confess anything or decide.

Small Image:

Six in the second place

Influence in the calves. Misfortune. Staying put brings good fortune.

You want to rush the moment you feel something, legs moving before the head. The line marks acting now as unfavorable. Hold still and look a few more times; waiting until things are clear is what turns it favorable.

Small Image:

Nine in the third place

Influence in the thighs. What one holds to is merely following others. Going on brings humiliation.

No view of your own: you go wherever they go, matching their pace in everything or buying in because others did. Keep that up and it gets embarrassing. Work out what you actually want first.

Small Image:

Nine in the fourth place

Steadfastness brings good fortune; regret disappears. Restless, coming and going, only your companions follow your thoughts.

Your mind keeps going back and forth, guessing what they think, or quietly calculating. That only reaches people already like you. Set your heart straight and be open with them; that is how regret goes away.

Small Image:

Nine in the fifth place

Influence in the flesh of the back. No regret.

This person or matter doesn't move you much. It won't become a close bond, but you're also unlikely to be pulled along by private feelings and regret it. Keeping some distance is fine.

Small Image:

Six at the top

Influence in the jaws, cheeks and tongue.

All talk: nice words and plenty of promises, no action. Zhu Xi reads this as plainly heading for trouble. People tend to see through it sooner or later, so say less, do more, and follow through on what you say.

Small Image:

Tuan commentary

Xian (Influence) means being moved. The yielding is above and the firm below; the two energies stir each other and draw together. Below is still, above is glad, and the man places himself beneath the woman: hence success, steadfastness pays, and taking a wife brings good fortune. Heaven and earth move each other, and all things come into being; the sage moves people's hearts, and all under heaven is at peace. Look at what they respond to, and the true nature of heaven, earth and all things can be seen.

The Image

A lake on the mountain: this is Xian (Influence). The noble person, seeing this, empties the mind and receives others openly.

The Sequence: why it comes here

With heaven and earth come all things; then male and female, then couples, then parent and child, ruler and minister, high and low, and only then do rites have a place to rest. The first half of the classic opens with Qian (The Creative) and Kun (The Receptive); the second half opens with Xian (Influence), the way of marriage.

Miscellaneous Notes

Xian (Influence) is quick; Heng (Duration) is lasting. Han Kangbo says nothing responds faster than mutual feeling. Xian is the spark felt at first touch, and Heng is a bond kept up over years: one is about speed, the other about lasting.
