Gen (Keeping Still)
Stop when it is time to stop, and stay in the place that is yours, without getting pulled along by whatever and whoever is in front of you.
Cast your own hexagramGen (Keeping Still) says this is not the moment to push ahead. Stop and hold your own position. Get clear on what is yours to do and what is not your business, and leave the outside noise unanswered for now.
Favorable
- Stop and think it through
- Keep to your own role
- Say things in order
- Keep a steady routine
Avoid
- Overstepping into others' work
- Dragging people along by force
- Rushing for results
- Changing plans after setting out
Work and money
- Job search
- Not a time to jump ship or fight for a title. The Image of Gen (Keeping Still) says to keep your thoughts within your position, so fill out the role you have. If you really want to leave, the first line keeps the toes still: think it through before the foot goes out the door.
- Business
- Pause expansion and protect your existing customers and cash. The Tuan says stop when it is time to stop and move when it is time to move. Use the pause to tidy up the product and the process, then act once the timing is right.
- Money
- Stop impulse spending and chasing prices that are already high. Holding what you have is enough. For now, don't add to positions or open new accounts to try something new.
Love and people
- Single
- New developments come slowly in Gen (Keeping Still), and your mind is not really turned outward. The Tuan describes two sides each standing in place, not answering each other. For now, put your energy into your own life.
- In a relationship
- Both of you may dig in. The second line keeps the calves still and cannot rescue what it follows, so the heart is not glad: you want to pull them along and they won't budge. Stop pushing and look after your own half.
- Getting back together
- The odds are low, and reaching out in a hurry tends to make things stiffer. The third line of Gen (Keeping Still) describes being stuck in the middle while holding everything down, which hurts most. Stop first and let your own heart settle.
- People and partnerships
- Stay out of other people's business; each person holding their own post works best here. The fourth line keeps the trunk still with no blame: watch your own words and actions, skip the gossip, and cooperation tends to go more smoothly.
Daily life
- Exams and study
- A good stretch for quiet, focused study, one subject at a time. Gen (Keeping Still) is about resting where you belong: fix your desk and your hours, turn the phone off, and keep only one book in front of you while you work.
- Moving and travel
- Moves and long trips are better postponed under Gen (Keeping Still) if you can. If you must go, set the itinerary and stick to it. Don't keep revising once you're on the road; stopping and going should both be clean.
- Body and mind
- The Judgment keeps still at the back until one no longer feels the body: let the mind rest somewhere still and drop the tension you carry. Put the phone down before bed and sit quietly for a while. If tightness in your body won't ease, a doctor beats toughing it out.
Traditional questions
- Something you are waiting for
- Things are likely to stay put for a while, with no big movement soon. The top line says solid steadiness brings good fortune: whoever stays calm to the end tends to come out well. Avoid chasing them for updates in the meantime.
- Disputes and lawsuits
- Don't rush your next move; more arguing only muddies things. The fifth line keeps the jaws still so words come in order, and regret disappears. Hold your tongue, and say what needs saying point by point.
- Lost things and people
- Moderately likely to be found, with a careful search. Gen (Mountain) is stone, gates and corners: check corners, beside the door, inside cabinets, along the base of walls and at turns in the stairs. Gen also points northeast.
Making a decision
Hold off for now. Stopping here costs you little; move again when the timing comes.
If you are…
Gen (Keeping Still) backs your decision to stop. Tell your producer and listeners how long the break will last and roughly what you'll come back with. During the pause, don't force yourself to record; travel, read, see shows, and start again once you've refilled.
Gen (Keeping Still) is about stopping where it is right to stop. After a year of pushing, a sudden halt can feel empty. Don't cram the whole summer with prep courses and shifts. Catch up on sleep, set a regular routine, and pick one or two things you actually want to do.
This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.
艮其背,不獲其身,行其庭,不見其人,无咎。
Keeping still at the back (the back is the part of the body that does not move), one no longer feels one's own body. Walking through a courtyard full of people, one does not see them. No blame.
Mountain over Mountain: Gen (Mountain) above and Gen (Mountain) below. Two mountains stacked on each other sit steady and do not move. So the hexagram is called Gen (Keeping Still): stopping, holding in place.
Six at the beginning
艮其趾,无咎,利永貞。
Keeping the toes still. No blame. It pays to be steadfast for the long term.
Things have only just begun, and pulling back before the first step costs the least. The real test is whether you can hold that decision, instead of getting restless a few days later and starting over.
Small Image: 艮其趾,未失正也。
Six in the second place
艮其腓,不拯其隨,其心不快。
Keeping the calves still. One cannot rescue what one follows (the waist above), and the heart is not glad.
You can stop yourself, but the person in charge or the team is still charging ahead, and you can't talk them out of it. Feeling frustrated is normal. State your view clearly, keep a record of it, and don't carry someone else's decision on your back.
Small Image: 不拯其隨,未退聽也。
Nine in the third place
艮其限,列其夤,厲薰心。
Keeping the waist still, the flesh along the spine is as if torn apart. Danger. Anxiety smolders in the heart like smoke.
Forcing yourself into total stillness, like cutting off everyone overnight or shutting down everything at once, tends to tear at body and mind. Stop the part that needs stopping and leave some give in the rest; that is how the anxiety comes down.
Small Image: 艮其限,危薰心也。
Six in the fourth place
艮其身,无咎。
Keeping the trunk still. No blame.
Managing your own behavior is enough for now: not firing back a reply on impulse, not signing anything while angry. You aren't yet in a position to manage others, so steady yourself first.
Small Image: 艮其身,止諸躬也。
Six in the fifth place
艮其輔,言有序,悔亡。
Keeping the jaws still. Words come in order. Regret disappears.
Right now, the more you say, the more can go wrong. Think before you speak, and put things in order of what matters. Every emotional sentence you hold back is one less mess to clean up later.
Small Image: 艮其輔,以中正也。
Nine at the top
敦艮,吉。
Keeping still with honest, solid steadiness. Good fortune.
At the very end you can still hold to your principles: not caving at the last minute of a negotiation, not breaking a habit you have finally quit. That solid steadiness is what tends to make the outcome good.
Small Image: 敦艮之吉,以厚終也。
艮,止也。時止則止,時行則行,動靜不失其時,其道光明。艮其止,止其所也。上下敵應,不相與也。是以不獲其身,行其庭不見其人,无咎也。
Gen (Keeping Still) means stopping. When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. When movement and rest each keep to their proper time, the way is bright. "Keeping still where one rests" (the Judgment's keeping still at the back) means resting in the place where one belongs. Above and below, the lines stand opposed and do not answer each other; they have no dealings. That is why one does not feel one's own body, walks through the courtyard without seeing the people there, and there is no blame.
The Image兼山,艮;君子以思不出其位。
Mountains joined one upon another: this is Gen (Keeping Still). The noble person, seeing this, keeps their thoughts from going beyond their own position.
The Sequence: why it comes here物不可以終動,止之,故受之以艮;艮者止也。
Things cannot keep moving forever; at some point they have to be brought to a stop. So Zhen (Thunder) is followed by Gen (Keeping Still). Gen means stopping.
Miscellaneous Notes震起也,艮止也。
Gen (Keeping Still) is stopping. Read it alongside Zhen (Thunder): Zhen is rising into motion, Gen is coming to rest. A mountain doesn't walk; once it reaches the place where it should stop, it stays there.
