No. 51 · Thunder over Thunder

Zhen (Thunder)

Thunder rolling in wave after wave: a sudden shock. Fear and alertness come first; only after that can you talk and laugh at ease, still holding on to what you are meant to keep.

Cast your own hexagram

In Zhen (Thunder) a sudden change or scare arrives. Being afraid is fine; what matters is letting it wake you up and correct you. Steady your nerves, and the most important things in your hands tend to stay safe. Later you can look back and laugh.

Favorable

  • Steady yourself after a scare
  • Hold on to what matters most
  • Review and correct afterward
  • Leave room to adapt

Avoid

  • Deciding in a panic
  • Freezing in place from fear
  • Chasing after everything at once
  • Forgetting the lesson once it passes

Work and money

Job search
A sudden change at work, a new manager, or a call at short notice are all possible in Zhen (Thunder). A jolt is fine. In the Judgment the one leading the sacrifice doesn't drop the ladle: keep a firm grip on your core work, and doing it steadily is what tends to get you noticed.
Business
Under Zhen (Thunder) the market or a client may shift suddenly, and things get messy for a while. The worst move is the fourth line's sinking into the mud after the shock. Stop the losses, keep your regulars close, then check where else your processes could break.
Money
Markets or income may swing suddenly. Don't panic-sell or chase prices up; first make sure your core savings are safe.

Love and people

Single
A sudden meeting could set your heart racing. Zhen (Thunder) is movement, so speaking up beats waiting around. Still, heat that comes fast can fade fast; meet a few more times before deciding anything.
In a relationship
Something may suddenly come up that startles you both. Words said in a panic hurt most, so cool off separately first. The Tuan commentary of Zhen (Thunder) says that afterward there are rules: agree together on how to handle it next time.
Getting back together
News may arrive out of nowhere; don't let it knock you off balance. The top line of Zhen (Thunder) has strength drained and eyes darting, and it warns against going forward. Wait until you're settled before judging whether to go back.
People and partnerships
A partnership may be shaken, say someone leaves or plans get scrambled. The fifth line of Zhen (Thunder) says danger comes and goes, yet nothing is lost and there is still work to do: the main direction is intact.

Daily life

Exams and study
An exam may change at the last minute, with a new format or a moved date. The third line of Zhen (Thunder) shows someone dazed by the shock; the pity is letting go completely. Keep studying: the same line says acting on the shock brings no trouble.
Moving and travel
Travel plans in Zhen (Thunder) are prone to last-minute changes, like delayed flights or a scrambled itinerary. Thunder is loud but often more scare than harm. Leave some buffer time and have a backup plan, and you can still get on your way.
Body and mind
Sudden events may shake you and leave you unsettled for a long time. The Image of Zhen (Thunder) speaks of fear leading to self-examination: after a scare, use it to adjust rather than replaying it in your head. If poor sleep goes on too long, talk to a doctor.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
News may arrive suddenly and give you a start. Zhen (Thunder) rolls in peal after peal, so the first one isn't necessarily the final word; wait for the next before you judge.
Disputes and lawsuits
The other side may make a sudden move that rattles you. The second line of Zhen (Thunder) climbs the ninefold hills and does not chase: step back to solid ground, don't rush to recover everything, and what was lost may still be won back later.
Lost things and people
About even odds, but you have to go looking. As a trigram, Zhen (Thunder) points to busy places where people pass, such as doorways, hallways and street corners, or shelves of bamboo and wood. Try the east first.

Making a decision

Hold off on big decisions in the middle of the shake-up. Wait until the shock has passed and you can see clearly, then decide the next step.

If you are…

A friend asked the night before to emcee a wedding

Being called on suddenly sends your pulse up; that's normal. Zhen (Thunder) talks of laughing at ease after the fright. Confirm the run of show, the couple's names and how to address key relatives, then relax about the rest. If a small slip happens on stage, smile and keep going.

Someone sleeping badly since an earthquake, dreading aftershocks

Fear is natural here, and Zhen (Thunder) turns it into preparation: pack an emergency kit, secure the furniture, plan the way out. Once you've done what you can, it gets easier to rest. If the poor sleep goes on for weeks, it's worth talking it over with a doctor.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

Success. Thunder comes, and people look around in fear; afterward they talk and laugh at ease. Thunder startles everyone for a hundred miles, yet the one leading the sacrifice does not drop the ladle (for lifting meat from the cauldron) or the cup of fragrant sacrificial wine.

Thunder over Thunder: the Zhen trigram above and below. Zhen is thunder and movement. One yang line bursts up from beneath two yin lines, like thunder breaking out of the ground, and doubled it means peal after peal. Hence Zhen (Thunder): shock, arousal.

Nine at the beginning

Thunder comes, and one looks around in fear; afterward one talks and laughs at ease. Good fortune.

Being startled when something sudden hits is normal. Because you take it seriously and stay alert, you can look back and laugh once it's handled.

Small Image:

Six in the second place

Thunder comes with danger. By reckoning (Zhu Xi calls the word unclear; this follows Cheng Yi), one loses one's cowries (wealth) and climbs the ninefold hills. Do not chase after them; in seven days they are regained.

A sudden upheaval may cost you money or belongings. Get yourself somewhere safe first and don't rush to recover what's lost. Once the storm passes, what belongs to you is likely to come back.

Small Image:

Six in the third place

Thunder leaves one dazed and unsettled. If the shock spurs one to act and correct course, there is no calamity.

The shock has you at a loss, and you sense you're in the wrong spot. Turn the fright into fuel and use it to fix what you've been doing wrong.

Small Image:

Nine in the fourth place

Thunder, and then one sinks into the mud and cannot rouse oneself.

The shock has come, yet you're stuck in small tasks and procrastination and can't move. Find the one thing dragging you down the most and deal with it first.

Small Image:

Six in the fifth place

Thunder goes and comes, both with danger. By reckoning, nothing is lost, and one can still keep to one's work.

One shock after another keeps things unsteady. Hold on to your core work and principles and finish what needs doing one task at a time; that can keep losses to a minimum.

Small Image:

Six at the top

Thunder drains one's strength; the eyes dart about in alarm. Going forward brings misfortune. If one takes fright when the thunder strikes not oneself but one's neighbor, there is no blame. In marriage ties there will be words of complaint.

You're already rattled, and charging ahead now tends to go wrong. When you see trouble hit someone else, adjust your own course early. Even so, people close to you may still have complaints.

Small Image:

Tuan commentary

Zhen (Thunder): success. "Thunder comes, and people look around in fear": fear brings blessings. "Afterward they talk and laugh at ease": afterward there are rules to follow. "Thunder startles for a hundred miles": it startles those far away and frightens those nearby. (The eldest son) can come forth to guard the ancestral temple and the altars of the land, and serve as master of the sacrifice.

The Image

Thunder upon thunder: this is Zhen (Thunder). The noble person, seeing this, stays wary, examining and correcting themselves.

The Sequence: why it comes here

The Sequence says no one is fitter to take charge of the ritual vessels than the eldest son, so Ding (The Cauldron) is followed by Zhen (Thunder). The Zhen trigram stands for the eldest son, and Zhen means movement.

Miscellaneous Notes

Zhen (Thunder) is rising; Gen (Keeping Still) is stopping. In Zhen the single yang line sits at the bottom and drives upward, like something being set in motion; in Gen it rests at the top and halts. The two hexagrams are each other turned upside down.
