Wu Wang (Innocence)

No reckless moves and no reaching for what isn't yours: that is Wu Wang (Innocence). Acting on what is real and right goes very well. Pushing ahead with crooked motives is where things go wrong.

Cast your own hexagram

Wu Wang (Innocence) asks you to be real and skip the angles. Doing things the straight way goes well; crooked ideas and shortcuts are what the Judgment warns against. Be ready, too, for surprises that aren't your doing.

Favorable

  • Say it and do it as it is
  • Check your motives first
  • Keep an emergency fund
  • Keep records and receipts

Avoid

  • Inflating or dressing things up
  • Shortcuts and speculation
  • Acting on a sudden whim
  • Vouching for other people

Work and money

Job search
Apply on your real record and describe your experience as it is, and things tend to go well. Inflated credentials or a back door are exactly what the Judgment warns against when it speaks of not being upright: even if you get in, it tends to come out.
Business
An honest product at an honest price goes the distance. Smooth talk and gray-area tactics for fast money are what Wu Wang (Innocence) means by "it does not pay to go anywhere". Also set money aside for an unexpected loss.
Money
Earn what you have actually earned. Steer clear of speculation, insider tips and get-rich-quick offers. Keep an emergency fund for costs nobody saw coming.

Love and people

Single
Meet people as you really are; no need for a polished act. The second line plows without thinking of the harvest: enjoy getting to know someone before you start weighing their profile and where it might lead.
In a relationship
Sincerity keeps things running well. A misunderstanding or a problem neither of you saw coming may turn up. Before blaming them, find out what actually happened.
Getting back together
If it was genuine back then and the real problem has been dealt with, reaching out is reasonable. If it is about not wanting to lose or winning back your pride, the motive isn't straight, and the Judgment warns against going.
People and partnerships
Keep partnerships above board, with the books and the split of work in the open. Watch for the third line's spillover, where a passerby takes the ox and the townspeople pay. Don't vouch for someone else's dealings.

Daily life

Exams and study
Study honestly and your results tend to reflect it. Thunder under heaven lets each thing grow by its nature: what you put in is what shows up. Skip the guesswork on test questions and the shortcuts, and stay far from cheating.
Moving and travel
Following the plan mostly goes fine, but leave room for surprises with documents, luggage and connections. The top line warns that moving when the timing is off brings trouble, so put spur-of-the-moment trips on hold.
Body and mind
Stress may land on you out of nowhere, and it is easy to feel wronged. Keep your normal routine and don't experiment with remedies on your own. If something feels off physically, let a doctor sort it out rather than guessing.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
It arrives at its own pace; you can't hurry it. As long as you haven't tampered with anything on your side, wait. Pulling strings to speed it up is more likely to cause problems.
Disputes and lawsuits
If you are in the right, the fourth line says you can stand firm, with no blame. You may have been pulled in for no reason of your own. Gather evidence and follow the process; avoid back-channel moves.
Lost things and people
About even odds; someone may have picked it up in passing. Look up high near round or metal objects (Qian), or along a well-used path or by a doorway where people pass (Zhen).

Making a decision

If your motive is clean, go ahead. If you already know something about this isn't right, don't do it. The Judgment is blunt: not upright means trouble.

If you are…

A marketing coordinator tempted to pad a resume

Wu Wang (Innocence) means without falseness, and it is direct with you: write it straight and things go smoothly; pad it and it tends to unravel once you are in. Describing what you really did, in detail, carries more weight than an inflated title.

Someone whose parked car was hit by another driver

This is the classic trouble without fault: not your doing, but yours to handle. Take photos, file the report and go through insurance properly instead of arguing with the other driver. It feels unfair, but handling it by the book is the fastest way to close it.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

Great success; it pays to be steadfast. If one is not upright, there is calamity, and it does not pay to go anywhere.

Heaven over Thunder: Qian (Heaven) above, Zhen (Thunder) below. Thunder rolls beneath the sky, everything is startled awake, and each thing grows according to its own nature, with nothing false in it. That is why it is called Wu Wang (Innocence), literally "without falseness".

Nine at the beginning

Without falseness. Going forward brings good fortune.

Your motives are clean and your methods are honest, so you can move ahead with confidence. Put your idea forward plainly or apply through the proper channels, and things tend to go smoothly.

Small Image:

Six in the second place

Not plowing with the harvest in mind, not clearing new ground with the finished field in mind: then it pays to go somewhere.

Stop tallying the payoff while you work and do what is in front of you well. If you are learning a new skill, don't rush to make money from it yet. Less calculating is what lets you keep going.

Small Image:

Six in the third place

Calamity without fault. Someone tethers an ox; the passerby takes it, and the townspeople suffer the calamity.

You didn't do it, but you may get dragged in, like being suspected when a coworker slips up, or happening to be there when something goes missing. Keep records, explain what happened clearly, and don't lash out just because it feels unfair.

Small Image:

Nine in the fourth place

One can stay steadfast. No blame.

There is no outside help right now, so this is not the time to go on the offensive. Hold on to what you already have, such as your current job or the plan already in place, and you are on solid ground.

Small Image:

Nine in the fifth place

Illness without fault. Take no medicine, and there will be joy.

The trouble isn't something you caused, maybe a passing misunderstanding or a shake-up from outside. Hold off on dramatic fixes; strong remedies taken in a hurry often make it worse. If you actually feel unwell, still see a doctor.

Small Image:

Nine at the top

Without falseness, yet acting brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.

You haven't done anything wrong, but this stretch has run its course. Forcing one more push now only stirs up trouble. Stop here and wait for the situation to reset.

Small Image:

Tuan commentary

Wu Wang (Innocence): the firm comes from outside and becomes master within. It moves and is strong; the firm line is central and has a response. Great success through correctness: this is the mandate of heaven. "If one is not upright, there is calamity, and it does not pay to go anywhere." When one goes forth in a time without falseness yet is not upright, where can one go? If heaven's mandate does not protect you, can you go at all?

The Image

Thunder rolls beneath heaven, and all things are true to their nature, without falseness. The former kings, seeing this, matched the seasons in full measure and nurtured all things.

The Sequence: why it comes here

Fu (Return) comes first. Once you have returned to the right path, you no longer act falsely, so Fu is followed by Wu Wang (Innocence).

Miscellaneous Notes

Da Xu (Great Taming) is about timing; Wu Wang (Innocence) is about trouble. Han Kangbo's commentary explains: Great Taming stores up in step with the moment, so it grows great; Innocence is a time when you must not act rashly, and a rash move invites trouble.
