Sheng (Pushing Upward)

Like a tree growing up out of the ground, you rise one step at a time. Follow the timing and keep adding a little, and the road upward tends to stay open.

Cast your own hexagram

Sheng (Pushing Upward) is a time to move up, slowly, the way a tree grows. Look for people who can open doors for you, don't let worry hold you back, and keep moving steadily. Small gains tend to build into something large.

Favorable

  • Ask someone to vouch for you
  • Build up step by step
  • Move up through proper channels
  • Keep sharpening your craft

Avoid

  • Rushing to skip levels
  • Paving the way with gifts
  • Coasting once it gets easy
  • Forcing it once at the top

Work and money

Job search
The chance at a promotion or a better role is real. The Judgment says to see the great person: tell your manager what you want to take on, or ask a mentor for a referral. It also says do not worry, so don't stay quiet just because you feel junior.
Business
Sheng (Pushing Upward) favors steady growth: get one location right before opening a second, and build your customer base level by level. The Image heaps up small things until they are high, so skip the overnight-hit plan; a bit more each month is growth.
Money
Regular, automatic saving and long-term building suit this time, and income has room to rise. Don't let a smooth run tempt you into one big bet.

Love and people

Single
Chances to meet people are slowly increasing, and a connection can warm up over time. A tree takes time to grow out of the soil. Be friends first, go out a few more times, and say how you feel once it comes naturally.
In a relationship
In Sheng (Pushing Upward) the relationship is on the rise, a good time to talk about next steps: moving in, meeting family, planning a wedding. Take them one at a time at a pace you both like, and settle money and housing first.
Getting back together
There is a chance of slowly reconnecting, as long as you have truly changed. The second line says that with sincerity even a simple offering is enough: skip the big gift or the grand gesture, and genuinely ask how they've been.
People and partnerships
Working with people more senior than you suits Sheng (Pushing Upward). The first line's "rising with trust" means those above want to bring you along and you are willing to follow. Listen more, do more, and your contribution tends to get noticed.

Daily life

Exams and study
Exams and applications lean favorable. The Tuan says the yielding rises in keeping with the time: work through the material chapter by chapter on schedule. Like the fifth line rising up the steps, steady one level before taking the next.
Moving and travel
Trips and moves tend to go smoothly under Sheng (Pushing Upward). The third line rises into an empty town where nothing blocks the way. When things are this easy, it's easy to forget a passport or mix up a date, so check once more before you leave.
Body and mind
Your energy is on the way up, a good time to set a new routine or start exercising and build it up gradually. While you're pushing ahead, don't stay up late forcing it; stop when you're tired. If you keep feeling unwell, getting checked by a doctor can put your mind at ease.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
News tends to come closer in stages, small first, then bigger. While you wait, put your energy back into the work at hand instead of chasing updates. The top line rises in the dark without knowing when to stop; watching too closely only wears you out.
Disputes and lawsuits
Your position is strong: escalate through proper channels, seek mediation or bring in a lawyer. In the fourth line the king makes an offering on Mount Qi: stay respectful and in your role, and support from above tends to follow. Don't press too hard because it's going your way.
Lost things and people
Likely to be found. Xun (Wind) is wood and long, narrow things; Kun (Earth) is the ground and cloth. Look low: under wooden furniture to the southeast, along the floor, in piles of fabric or laundry.

Making a decision

Go ahead; this is a time for rising. Find the right people to help, and take it one step at a time.

If you are…

A grocery stocker taking night classes toward a nursing degree

Working days and studying nights is exhausting, but this road leads upward, which is what Sheng (Pushing Upward) is about. Each finished course brings the degree a little closer, and the time management you learn carries into the job later. When you're worn out, slow the pace, but don't stop.

An amateur potter entering a juried show for the first time

Three years of practice is the soil your work grows from, and in Sheng (Pushing Upward) it doesn't go to waste. Make your entry at your usual rhythm and have your teacher look it over before you revise. Nerves are normal. For a first show, aim for steady work and leave prizes for next time.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

元亨,用見大人,勿恤,南征吉。

Great success. Use this to see the great person. Do not worry. Setting out to the south brings good fortune.

Earth over Wind: Kun (Earth) above, Xun (Wind) below. Xun is also wood. A tree grows out of the earth and gets a little taller every day, so the hexagram is called Sheng (Pushing Upward): rising.

Six at the beginning

允升,大吉。

Rising with trust (truly rising). Great good fortune.

People above you want to bring you along, and you are willing to work with them. The chance to move up is real. Learn from them and follow their lead; this line calls it great good fortune.

Small Image: 允升大吉,上合志也。

Nine in the second place

孚乃利用禴,无咎。

With sincerity, it pays to make even the simple summer offering. No blame.

What carries you is sincerity and solid work, not gifts or polishing your image. Do the job well, and the people above tend to see it.

Small Image: 九二之孚,有喜也。

Nine in the third place

升虛邑。

Rising into an empty town (nothing stands in the way).

The way ahead is clear and few people are blocking you. You can push forward with confidence; just watch that a smooth stretch doesn't make you miss details.

Small Image: 升虛邑,无所疑也。

Six in the fourth place

王用亨于岐山,吉无咎。

The king makes an offering on Mount Qi. Good fortune, no blame.

You work close to someone in charge and make things run smoothly for them. Stay respectful and keep to your role, and this position can produce real results.

Small Image: 王用亨于岐山,順事也。

Six in the fifth place

貞吉,升階。

Steadfastness brings good fortune. Rising up the steps.

Promotion or the next level is within reach. Climb by the rules, one step at a time, and stand firmly on each one. That holds up better than a shortcut.

Small Image: 貞吉升階,大得志也。

Six at the top

冥升,利于不息之貞。

Rising in the dark, without seeing clearly. It pays to turn this unceasing drive into steadfastness that never rests.

You have reached the top and still want to go higher, which makes it easy to lose sight of yourself. Put the energy into getting better at your actual work instead of chasing titles and scale.

Small Image: 冥升在上,消不富也。

Tuan commentary

柔以時升,巽而順,剛中而應,是以大亨。用見大人,勿恤;有慶也。南征吉,志行也。

Sheng (Pushing Upward): the yielding rises in keeping with the time. Gentle below and compliant above, the firm line sits in the center and has a response, so there is great success. Use this to see the great person, do not worry: there will be cause for celebration. Setting out to the south brings good fortune: one's purpose can be carried out.

The Image

地中生木,升;君子以順德,積小以高大。

Wood grows in the middle of the earth: this is Sheng (Pushing Upward). The noble person, seeing this, is careful in cultivating virtue (Zhu Xi reads the word as "careful"), heaping up small things until they become high and great.

The Sequence: why it comes here

聚而上者,謂之升,故受之以升。

Before this comes Cui (Gathering), which means coming together. When what has gathered keeps building upward, higher and higher, that is Sheng (Pushing Upward). So Cui is followed by Sheng.

Miscellaneous Notes

萃聚,而升不來也。

Sheng (Pushing Upward) goes up and does not return; the text says it "does not come back." Set beside Cui (Gathering), the contrast is clear: Cui draws people and things together here, while Sheng keeps growing upward on its own and never turns back.
