Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light)
The light has sunk below the earth. You are somewhere dim, misunderstood, maybe even held down. Keep a low profile outwardly, hold to what is right inwardly, and get through it.
Cast your own hexagramMing Yi (Darkening of the Light) is a time when the light is covered: the environment works against you, someone is holding you down, or your good qualities go unseen. Pull in your edge, hold your principles inside, and get through this stretch quietly. The light tends to come back.
Favorable
- Keep a low profile
- Hold your limits
- Document to protect yourself
- Leave quietly once you see clearly
Avoid
- Clashing head on
- Going along with wrongdoing
- Rushing to turn it all around
- Making a show of yourself
Work and money
- Job search
- The light has gone into the earth: your ability is hard to see right now and may even be held down, so job hunting or switching isn't smooth. Keep applying, but don't shine too brightly in interviews. The Image says to veil your light and see clearly.
- Business
- An unfavorable time to open a new location, expand loudly or sign a big contract; money and reputation draw unwanted attention now. Stick to the core business, keep the books clean, and save your strength for when the sun is up again.
- Money
- Defend rather than attack. Keep a low profile, avoid large investments, and don't lend money out. Keep your money somewhere safe.
Love and people
- Single
- Your good qualities go unnoticed for now and your mood runs low, so meeting someone is unlikely. Don't force a string of dates; keep your life steady. If someone does come close, watch how they treat people in private.
- In a relationship
- There is hurt that goes unspoken, or outside pressure is wearing on you both. Bright within, yielding without: stay clear-headed inside but soften on the surface, and don't dig up old grievances when they are at their lowest.
- Getting back together
- The chances are small, and reaching out now is likely to feel like pressure to them. The first line goes three days without eating: leaving is hard by nature. Hold yourself together first, and don't trade your hurt for their return.
- People and partnerships
- Someone on the team is unreasonable or keeps others down, and confronting them head on tends to get you hurt. Cooperate on the surface, hold your limits inside, and document important things. The fourth line: once you have seen enough, leave quietly.
Daily life
- Exams and study
- Effort may not show in your scores right away, like light buried in soil. No need to announce your goals; build your foundation quietly. Listen to others' progress if you like, but keep your own pace.
- Moving and travel
- Put off trips and moves that aren't necessary; on the road you are likely to meet irritation or petty obstacles. If you need to leave a bad situation, go. The first line lowers its wings in flight: leave quietly, without fanfare.
- Body and mind
- Your mood can sink, and it may feel like no one sees your effort. Let yourself be quiet for a while. Keep a steady routine, cut back on late nights, and talk to someone you can be honest with. If your body really feels off, see a doctor.
Traditional questions
- Something you are waiting for
- Slow; the sun is still below the ground. News tends to come only once the person or situation holding you down changes and the light shows again. Pushing in the meantime tends to make it worse.
- Disputes and lawsuits
- The other side has the upper hand and the rules don't favor you, so a lawsuit or negotiation is unfavorable and pressing it tends to be costly. Preserve evidence and protect yourself. Even with the key piece, the third line says not to rush to set it all right.
- Lost things and people
- Fairly hard to recover. Kun (Earth) above and Li (Fire) below: check low places, bags and piles of clothes, under things on the floor, or near lamps, the stove, and toward the south.
Making a decision
Hold off on big moves. Push important decisions back as far as you can. The priority now is to conserve your strength and see the situation clearly.
If you are…
Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light) is when the earth covers the light, and arguing harder won't make you look better right now. Save screenshots first, and don't answer every comment. Once it dies down, post one plain account of what happened.
Jizi kept himself intact in a chaotic court without going along with it. Stay polite at gatherings without pushing back on every remark. Know your limits clearly, agree with your partner in private first, and let them step in where a line needs holding.
This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.
利艱貞。
It pays to stay steadfast in hardship.
Earth over Fire: Kun (Earth) above, Li (Fire) below. Li is fire and the sun. The sun sinks into the ground, and its light is wounded and covered, so it is called Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light); the second word means injury.
Nine at the beginning
明夷于飛,垂其翼。君子于行,三日不食,有攸往,主人有言。
Darkening of the light in flight: it lowers its wings. The noble person, on the road, goes three days without eating. There is somewhere to go, and the host there has critical words.
You sense the environment turning, like the company's direction shifting or someone targeting you, and getting out early is right. Leaving tends to be hard and you may be misunderstood. Protect yourself first.
Small Image: 君子于行,義不食也。
Six in the second place
明夷,夷于左股,用拯馬壯,吉。
Darkening of the light: wounded in the left thigh. Rescued with a strong horse. Good fortune.
You got caught in it and took a hit, but nothing fundamental is damaged. Move fast and bring in strong people or resources, and you can get clear quickly.
Small Image: 六二之吉,順以則也。
Nine in the third place
明夷于南狩,得其大首,不可疾貞。
Darkening of the light while hunting in the south: the great chief is captured. One must not be hasty in setting things right.
You finally have a chance to deal with the biggest problem, perhaps hard evidence or a way to remove the person who kept holding you down. Clean up step by step afterward; rushing to overturn everything at once invites trouble.
Small Image: 南狩之志,乃大得也。
Six in the fourth place
入于左腹,獲明夷之心,于出門庭。
Entering the left side of the belly (a deep, hidden place), one learns the heart of the darkening of the light, and so goes out of the gate and courtyard (leaves, far behind).
You got close to the center and now see what the real problem is, and that it won't change. Having seen it, leave quietly. There is no need to make a scene.
Small Image: 入于左腹,獲心意也。
Six in the fifth place
箕子之明夷,利貞。
The darkening of the light as Jizi met it (uncle of the last Shang king, who feigned madness to protect himself). Steadfastness pays.
You are close to the source of the problem and can't walk away, for example beside a difficult manager or family member. Keep a low profile, avoid head-on clashes, hold on to your principles, and wait for the right time.
Small Image: 箕子之貞,明不可息也。
Six at the top
不明晦,初登于天,後入于地。
Not light but darkness. First it climbed up to heaven; later it went down into the earth.
This is the side that keeps others' light down: powerful for a while, then collapsing in the end. If you are holding your position by suppressing other people, now is the time to stop.
Small Image: 初登于天,照四國也。後入于地,失則也。
明入地中,明夷。內文明而外柔順,以蒙大難,文王以之。利艱貞,晦其明也,內難而能正其志,箕子以之。
Brightness enters the earth: this is Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light). Inwardly cultured and bright, outwardly yielding and compliant, and in this way enduring a great calamity: King Wen did this. It pays to stay steadfast in hardship, which means veiling one's light. Facing danger within one's own house and still keeping one's purpose upright: Jizi did this.
The Image明入地中,明夷;君子以蒞眾,用晦而明。
Brightness enters the earth: this is Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light). The noble person, seeing this, governs the people by keeping their own light veiled, and so sees all the more clearly.
The Sequence: why it comes here進必有所傷,故受之以明夷;夷者傷也。
The hexagram before is Jin (Progress), and Jin means advancing. Whoever keeps advancing is bound to get hurt. So Jin is followed by Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light), and the word means wounding.
Miscellaneous Notes晉晝也,明夷誅也。
Jin (Progress) is daytime, the sun above the earth. Ming Yi (Darkening of the Light) is punishment, which means wounding: the sun sinks into the earth and its light is hurt. The two hexagrams are each other turned upside down, one bright and one dark.
