Bi (Grace)

Bi (Grace) is about adornment and style. Presenting things well helps, but only a little; in the end it comes back to plain, honest substance.

Cast your own hexagram

Bi (Grace) is about presentation and appearances. Taking care of how things look and how you present them does make things go a little more smoothly. The Judgment only promises small benefit, though; anything big still rests on real ability.

Favorable

  • Tidy up how things look
  • Present your work clearly
  • Go ahead with small matters
  • Return to plain substance

Avoid

  • Building an image you can't sustain
  • Big decisions based on looks
  • Spending to keep up appearances
  • Rushing into a lawsuit

Work and money

Job search
Updating your resume, sorting your portfolio and dressing well for interviews all count; that is what Bi (Grace) is for. The Judgment promises only small benefit, so the offer still comes down to skill. Don't present an image you can't back up.
Business
Good for new packaging, a refreshed shopfront or brand visuals; small changes pay off. Don't sign a large investment because the pitch looks great. A fire at the foot of the mountain only lights the lower slopes.
Money
Spending a little on necessary presentation, such as tidying a storefront or improving packaging, makes sense. Rein in spending on show and status and keep it small.

Love and people

Single
Looking good and curating your photos do get people to notice. Yet in the fourth line, the rider on the white horse comes for the real person. On dates, being yourself is what lasts.
In a relationship
A bit of ritual, like anniversaries and small surprises, brightens things between you. Skip the shows put on for other people, though. The top line's "plain white" is the reminder: ordinary days together are the foundation.
Getting back together
A carefully planned romantic gesture may move them for a moment, but it helps only a little. Better looks and smoother words alone are unlikely to win them back; show a real change.
People and partnerships
Manners, details and dressing for the occasion make things a bit smoother. The fifth line's meager roll of silk says a friendship isn't measured by the price of the gift. Genuine contact is what goes the distance.

Daily life

Exams and study
Neat notes and a good-looking summary sheet are fine, but don't spend hours on layout. Bi (Grace) gives only a small boost. Your score still comes from working through practice problems.
Moving and travel
Good for a short trip or a scenic getaway; fire under the mountain makes a pretty view. For a move or a long-term plan, don't go by photos and finishes alone. Visit in person and check the layout and the neighborhood.
Body and mind
You may be caught up in how you look and what others think, and keeping up appearances wears you out. Go back to a simple routine and compare less. If your body feels off, see a doctor.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
Small matters tend to come through; big ones lean slow. News may show up first as a nice surface, such as a verbal yes, and it only counts once the actual terms are settled.
Disputes and lawsuits
The Image says not to presume to settle lawsuits, so this is a poor time for court or major rulings. Smooth over small friction with kinder words. For a real dispute, hold off on filing until your records are complete.
Lost things and people
Likely to be found, and probably still indoors. Check near stone or rock ornaments, in cabinet corners and beside decorations, or in a bright spot where the light falls.

Making a decision

Go ahead with small things. On big decisions, look past the surface. Before signing a contract or a partnership, check the substance; don't let a beautiful pitch talk you into it.

If you are…

A florist getting ready to open a first small shop

Bi (Grace) says presentation helps, but only a little. A good sign and a stylish interior bring people through the door. Still, save most of the budget for the flowers and the service; repeat customers come back for the substance.

Someone heading to a setup dinner arranged by friends

Dressing well and picking a nice restaurant help, and this is exactly the kind of occasion Bi (Grace) covers. Just don't play a version of yourself you can't keep up. After a few meetings, they will be getting to know who you actually are.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

Success. There is small benefit in having somewhere to go.

Mountain over Fire: Gen (Mountain) above, Li (Fire) below. A fire burns at the foot of the mountain, and its light makes the trees and grass on the slopes glow. That decorative light is Bi (Grace), which means adornment.

Nine at the beginning

He adorns his feet, leaves the carriage behind and goes on foot.

You are starting out near the bottom, and someone offers you a shortcut or a bit of show that didn't come by the right route. Turn it down. Walk on your own feet and do the work in front of you well.

Small Image:

Six in the second place

Adorning the beard.

A beard moves with the chin. Your role is to support the person in charge, and taking good care of your part has real value. Just be clear about who you are following.

Small Image:

Nine in the third place

Adorned and glistening. Lasting steadfastness brings good fortune.

Life is going smoothly and you look the part, which is exactly when comfort pulls you in. Hold to your principles and habits over the long run instead of drifting with the pleasant stuff, and that is what keeps the good state going.

Small Image:

Six in the fourth place

Adorned, yet all in plain white; a white horse comes as if on wings. Not a raider: a suitor seeking marriage.

You want to get close to a person or an opportunity, and someone stands in the way, which makes you suspicious. Don't treat them as an enemy yet. Look more closely; the person in the middle may be there to join you.

Small Image:

Six in the fifth place

Adornment in the hills and gardens. The roll of silk offered is meager. Humiliation, yet in the end good fortune.

You choose plain over showy, and your gifts or hospitality may look thin, even cheap, to others. That stings a little. Putting your money and care into what is real is still the right call over time.

Small Image:

Nine at the top

Adornment in plain white, which is to say no adornment. No blame.

The packaging has gone as far as it can, and it is time to return to the original. Strip away the extras and meet people as you are. The simplest version is the one that holds up.

Small Image:

Tuan commentary

Bi (Grace) has success: the yielding comes and adorns the firm, so there is success. A firm line is divided off and rises to adorn the yielding, so there is small benefit in having somewhere to go. Firm and yielding interlace: this is the pattern of heaven. Brightness that knows where to stop: this is the pattern of human culture. Observe the pattern of heaven to see how the seasons change; observe the pattern of human culture to transform the world and shape its customs.

The Image

Fire at the foot of the mountain: this is Bi (Grace). The noble person, seeing this, brings clarity to the everyday affairs of government but does not presume to settle lawsuits. (A fire below the mountain does not shine far; it lights only small things.)

The Sequence: why it comes here

Things cannot simply come together any which way and leave it at that, so Shi He (Biting Through) is followed by Bi (Grace). Bi means adornment. Once people and things are joined, they need courtesy and refinement to give them order.

Miscellaneous Notes

Shi He (Biting Through) is eating; Bi (Grace) is without color. Han Kangbo read this as adornment fitting itself to everything, so it has no fixed color; others link it to the top line's "plain white", where adornment ends in bare white. It contrasts with the solid act of biting down in Shi He.
