Where the chart lines up

Learning from a beer-hall clown

In 1920 or 1921, Brecht took a small part in the cabaret of the Munich comedian Karl Valentin, and his diaries record numerous visits to see Valentin perform. Years later, in his Messingkauf Dialogues, he named Valentin as one of his chief influences at that time. His chart shows Tan Lang (Wang) with Hua Lu in the Life Palace. Tan Lang is often read as talent and entertainment; his drawing nourishment from popular performance is worth setting side by side with this star.

The Threepenny Opera opens in 1928

On 31 August 1928 (nominal age 31), The Threepenny Opera opened at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin. Brecht adapted it from Elisabeth Hauptmann's translation of The Beggar's Opera, with music by Kurt Weill and sets by Caspar Neher. In 1928 his annual Life Palace moves to his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace stands for career and work, so the premiere of his work this year lines up with this palace.
