Where the chart lines up
Years of arguing for mechanized forces
Between the two world wars, from 1918 to 1939, de Gaulle argued for mobile armored divisions. In 1934 he wrote Vers l'Armée de Métier (Towards a Professional Army), proposing mechanization of the infantry and an elite force with 3,000 tanks, and afterwards he often wrote to the politician Paul Reynaud. In his chart, the Career Palace holds Tian Tong (Bu) with Hua Ji (Transformation of Obstruction), and this palace is also his Body Palace. Hua Ji is where thought and effort go. Pressing his case again and again within his own profession lines up with this position.
Source ↗A reader of Bergson's philosophy
De Gaulle enjoyed philosophy by writers such as Bergson, Péguy and Barrès; his biographer Jean Lacouture suggests he was in fact better suited to be a writer and historian than a soldier. In his chart, the Fortune Palace holds Tai Yin (Miao) with Hua Ke (Transformation of Fame). The Fortune Palace covers interests and inner life, and Hua Ke is learning and a literary name: his line of reading and writing carries a glow. That lines up with his later War Memoirs becoming a staple of modern French literature.
Source ↗Founding the Fifth Republic in his Travel Palace decade
In 1958 (nominal age 69), at the request of President René Coty, he became Prime Minister and pushed through a new constitution, approved by referendum, establishing France's Fifth Republic; on December 21 that year he was elected President, taking office in January 1959. These years fall in his Travel Palace Decade Luck (nominal ages 62–71). In the decade's Four Transformations, Tian Liang (Miao) takes Hua Ke and returns to the natal Travel Palace, the decade's Life Palace itself. Hua Ke is reputation and being seen, which fits his return to the center of politics in this period.
