The Nature of Qing Yang
〈擎羊星性情〉
The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation
Introduction
This is Qing Yang in the 'natures of the stars' section of volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu; it heads the Six Malefic Stars. Qing Yang belongs to fire and metal, is a 'floating star' of the Northern Dipper, and its transformed qi is 'Punishment'.
- General nature (segments 1 to 5): in its temple it brings power and rank; the body is strong, the build coarse, the face marred; the person is hard and decisive, fond of fighting and bravado, scheming and cunning, and makes a name by force. It likes to be in its temple in the four tomb palaces Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei; meeting the sun and moon, a man harms his wife and a woman her husband. In the fallen palaces Mao and You it causes disaster and calamity, maiming and illness, blindness in one eye; with Lian Zhen, Huo Xing, Ju Men and Hua Ji in the same palace in a fallen position, there are hidden illnesses and injured hands and feet, 「且不善終」. A woman's chart, fallen: 「傷夫剋子,孤刑破相淫蕩」.
- Brightness (segments 6 and 7): in its temple in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, fallen in Zi, Wu, Mao and You, in agreement with the volume three brightness table and the Xingge chart.
- Verses: three for a man's chart and one for a woman's chart; the three that follow are really luck verses, though the base text miscopies their heading as 'Qing Yang in a man's chart', as the collation note explains.
Qing Yang always sits in the palace after Lu Cun; the first line of the verses, 「祿前一位安擎羊」, states exactly this placement rule. Lines such as 「定然夭絕在途中」 and 「定教一疾夢黃泉」 are translated as the original means them.
1擎羊火金,北斗浮星,化氣為刑。入廟權貴,身旺形粗破相,剛強果決,好勇鬥狠,機謀狡詐,橫立功名,能奪君子之權,
TranslationQing Yang belongs to fire and metal, is a floating star of the Northern Dipper, and its transformed qi is Punishment. In its temple it brings power and rank; the body is strong, the build coarse, the face marred; hard and decisive, fond of fighting and bravado, scheming and cunning, he makes a name by force and can seize the power of gentlemen,
- 浮星
- Floating star: the Quan Shu's term for malefic and helper stars, as opposed to the main stars.
- 化氣為刑
- Its transformed qi is Punishment: Qing Yang governs injury and legal punishment.
- 橫立功名
- To make a name by force: by overbearing, unconventional means.
Qing Yang's transformed qi is Punishment: penalties, wounds, blades. It is placed by the year stem in the palace after Lu Cun, so on the chart Qing Yang, Lu Cun and Tuo Luo always stand in a row. This segment first says 'power and rank' in its temple, then gives the character: hard and decisive, fond of fighting, scheming and cunning. 「能奪君子之權」 is a weighty verdict: Qing Yang wins its place not by the proper route but by force and stratagem. What Does Qing Yang Govern? says that guarding the Body or Life Palace it is 「性粗行暴,孤單,視親為疏,翻恩為怨」 (What Does Qing Yang Govern?), harsher than here. The temperament it describes is strongly competitive and ready to meet force with force: drive when aimed at the right target, conflict when aimed at the wrong one.
2喜西北生人為福,宜命在四墓宮廟地,亦喜四墓生人,會日月男剋妻而女剋夫,會昌曲左右有暗痣斑痕,
TranslationIt likes people born in the northwest, for whom it is a blessing; the Life Palace should be in a temple position among the four tomb palaces, and it also likes people born in the four tomb years. Meeting the sun (Tai Yang) and the moon (Tai Yin), a man harms his wife and a woman her husband; meeting Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, there are hidden moles and scars,
- 四墓
- The four tomb palaces: Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei; 四墓生人 means people born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years.
「喜西北生人」 refers to the direction of the birthplace; What Does Qing Yang Govern? has 「北方生人為福」, a different direction, and conditions like these cannot be seen on a Xingge chart. 'A temple position among the four tomb palaces' can be checked: Qing Yang only ever falls in the eight palaces Zi, Chou, Mao, Chen, Wu, Wei, You and Xu, and of these Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei are its temples. 'People born in the four tomb years' means born in a Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei year, which is the year branch. Meeting the sun and moon harms the spouse because in the Quan Shu Tai Yang and Tai Yin stand for male and female, father and mother, husband and wife, and when the star of punishment clashes with them the relationship is wounded. Qing Yang and Tuo Luo: Overview says they 「見日月女剋夫,而夫剋婦」 (Qing Yang and Tuo Luo: Overview), the same verdict.
3居卯酉陷宮作禍興殃,傷殘帶疾目眇,六甲六戊寅申生人守命,主其人孤單,不守祖業,二姓延生,巧藝為活,
TranslationIn the fallen palaces Mao and You it causes disaster and stirs up calamity: maiming and illness, blindness in one eye. When people born in the six Jia years, the six Wu years, or Yin and Shen years have it guarding the Life Palace, the person is alone, does not keep the ancestral property, survives only by passing to another surname, and lives by a craft,
- 目眇
- Blind in one eye, or with poor sight.
- 二姓延生
- To survive by passing to another surname: to be adopted or fostered into another family in order to live.
- 六甲六戊寅申生人
- Terse in the original, which does not say how these conditions combine; translated literally here.
Only two year stems put Qing Yang in Mao or You: Jia (Qing Yang in Mao) and Geng (Qing Yang in You). So the Wu (戊) of 「六甲六戊」 does not fit the chart: in Wu years Qing Yang is in Wu (午) and never in Mao or You. What Does Qing Yang Govern? has 「六甲六庚生人,必有凶禍」 (What Does Qing Yang Govern?), so 戊 here is very probably a mistake for 庚. 'People born in Yin and Shen years' is a year-branch condition, a separate set again. 'Blindness in one eye' and maiming are the typical verdicts on a fallen Qing Yang. 二姓延生 is explained in the note; in modern terms it could mean being fostered, taking the mother's surname, or being raised by relatives.
4廉貞火巨忌星陷地同宮,則帶暗疾,或面手足有傷殘,且不善終,一生多招刑禍,否則為僧道。
TranslationIn the same palace as Lian Zhen, Huo Xing, Ju Men and Hua Ji in a fallen position, there are hidden illnesses, or maiming of the face, hands and feet, and moreover no good end; all one's life one brings on punishment and disaster; otherwise one becomes a monk or Daoist.
- 暗疾
- A hidden illness, one that does not show.
Qing Yang in a fallen position sharing a palace with Lian Zhen, Huo Xing, Ju Men and Hua Ji is one of the Quan Shu's most unlucky combinations for this star. Lian Zhen's transformed qi is Imprisonment and Qing Yang's is Punishment, and punishment meeting imprisonment comes up again and again in the Quan Shu; the Qi Sha chapter also says 「會刑囚傷剋」. Ju Men's transformed qi is Darkness, and Qing Yang and Tuo Luo: Overview says 「刑與暗同行招暗疾而壞目」 (Qing Yang and Tuo Luo: Overview). So the 'hidden illnesses' and 'maiming' here both have a source. Qing Yang's fallen positions are Zi, Wu, Mao and You, and both Lian Zhen and Ju Men can share a palace with it there. 'Otherwise a monk or Daoist' is the Quan Shu's standard way out when malefic stars are heavy.
5女命入廟權貴,陷地傷夫剋子,孤刑破相淫蕩。
TranslationA woman's chart: in its temple, power and rank; fallen, she harms her husband and children, and is lonely, punished, marred in the face, and lewd.
A woman's Qing Yang in its temple also means 'power and rank', just as for a man; fallen, it means harm to husband and children, loneliness, punishment, a marred face and lewdness. The passage mirrors the man's, but the fallen verdict adds 'lewd', the Quan Shu's usual extra charge against women with malefic stars. What Does Qing Yang Govern? says of women 「入廟加吉上局,殺耗沖破多主刑剋下局」 (What Does Qing Yang Govern?), a clearer condition: in its temple it still needs lucky stars to make a high pattern. A strong-willed woman who knows her mind and fights for what she wants will, in a fiercely competitive setting with little support, run into more conflict in her relationships.
6辰戌丑未入廟,亦宜辰戌丑未生人財官格。
TranslationIn Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei it is in its temple, and it also suits people born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years: a wealth and office pattern.
- 財官格
- A wealth and office pattern: a chart good for both money and official career.
The Xingge approach'People born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years: a wealth and office pattern' depends on the birth-year branch, which Xingge's chart conditions cannot judge, so this line carries no chart condition.
Qing Yang is in its temple in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei: Chen in Yi years, Xu in Xin years, Chou in Gui years, Wei in Ding and Ji years. Qing Yang belongs to fire and metal and the four tombs are earth; fire produces earth and earth produces metal, so in the storehouse it is held in and turned into strength. The second half, 'people born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years', looks at the birth-year branch, which, as the Xingge approach notes, the chart conditions cannot judge. Star Combinations says 「擎羊入廟富貴聲揚」 (Star Combinations: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo) and 「羊火同宮威權壓眾」, with the note 「辰戍人佳,丑未次之」 (辰戍 is a slip for 辰戌) (Star Combinations: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo): both are positive verdicts on Qing Yang in its temple.
7子午卯酉陷地。
TranslationIn Zi, Wu, Mao and You it is fallen.
Qing Yang is fallen in Zi, Wu, Mao and You, and Xingge marks it Xian (Fallen) there too. The four fallen palaces correspond to Ren years (Zi), Bing and Wu years (Wu), Jia years (Mao) and Geng years (You). Star Combinations says 「擎羊子午卯酉非夭折而刑傷」, with the note 「午凶卯次之。子酉又次之」, and calls the Wu palace 「馬頭帶劍」 (Star Combinations: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo), the later pattern Ma Tou Dai Jian (a sword at the horse's head). So although all four are fallen, they differ in weight: Wu is the worst, but it is also the position most likely, 'when lucky stars are many', to turn into a military career.
擎羊入男命吉凶訣:
9祿前一位安擎羊,上將逢之福祿加,更得貴人相守照,兵權萬里壯皇家。
TranslationOne place in front of Lu Cun, Qing Yang is set; a high general who meets it has blessings and income increased; if also noble stars guard and shine on it, he holds military command over ten thousand li and strengthens the imperial house.
- 祿前一位
- One place in front of Lu Cun: the next palace after Lu Cun's (one step forward) holds Qing Yang.
- 貴人
- Noble stars: here Tian Kui and Tian Yue.
「祿前一位安擎羊」 is a placement rhyme: the palace after Lu Cun holds Qing Yang. A high general who meets it gains blessings and income, and with noble stars guarding it he commands armies over ten thousand li. This is the most positive reading of Qing Yang: the star of punishment turned to war becomes decisiveness in battle. Star Combinations also has 「擎羊逢力士,李廣難封」 (Star Combinations: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo); Li Shi is one of the twelve Bo Shi spirits, and Qing Yang meeting it means great merit that is never rewarded with a title. Reading the two lines together: Qing Yang can win merit, but whether the reward actually arrives depends on having noble helpers.
10擎羊守命性剛強,四墓生人福壽長,若得紫府來會合,須知財穀富倉箱。
TranslationQing Yang guarding the Life Palace makes the character firm and strong; people born in the four tomb years have long blessings and life. If Zi Wei and Tian Fu come to meet it, know that money and grain fill the granary chests.
Qing Yang guarding the Life Palace, born in a four-tomb year, meeting Zi Wei and Tian Fu: money and grain fill the granary. The conditions come in three layers: Qing Yang in the Life Palace (a firm character), a year branch of Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei (the Quan Shu thinks Qing Yang is safest in the four tomb years), and Zi Wei and Tian Fu in the San Fang. Zi Wei and Tian Fu are emperor and treasury, able to subdue Qing Yang's punishment. On a Xingge chart, with Qing Yang in the Life Palace, check whether Zi Wei or Tian Fu is in the San Fang Si Zheng. When a forceful person has solid resources and backing from above, the drive turns into real wealth.
11擎羊一曜落閑宮,陀火沖兮便是凶,更若身命同劫殺,定然夭絕在途中。
TranslationWhen the single star Qing Yang falls in an idle palace and Tuo Luo and Huo Xing clash with it, that is unlucky; if moreover the Body and Life Palaces meet Di Jie and malefic stars together, he is sure to die young, cut off on the road.
- 閑宮
- An idle palace: a position where a star cannot show its strength. The Quan Shu gives a fixed table of idle palaces for certain main stars; it is not the same as a brightness grade.
- 夭絕
- To die young, life cut off.
Qing Yang in an idle palace, clashed by Tuo Luo and Huo Xing, is unlucky; with Di Jie and malefic stars meeting the Body and Life Palaces too, 「定然夭絕在途中」. The idle palaces are a fixed table in the Quan Shu (Life Master, Body Master and Notes on Chart Setup) that lists only main stars such as Zi Wei and Tan Lang; Qing Yang is not in it, so the palace meant here cannot be pinned down on the chart, and it is not simply another name for Qing Yang's fallen positions. 'On the road' means dying on a journey; the ancients set great store by a good death at home, and dying away from home was a great misfortune. There is a structural point here: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo are always separated by Lu Cun's palace, so they never share a palace and never face each other, which means the Tuo Luo that 'clashes' is mostly the annual Tuo Luo, or one in the San Fang. A combination like this calls for particular attention to safety in traffic, business travel and outdoor activities, which is something one can prepare for.
擎羊入女命吉凶訣:
13北斗浮星女命逢,火機巨忌必常庸,三方凶殺兼來湊,不夭終須浪滾濤。
TranslationWhen a woman's chart meets the floating star of the Northern Dipper, with Huo Xing, Tian Ji, Ju Men and Hua Ji, she is sure to be ordinary; if unlucky malefic stars in the San Fang gather as well, if she does not die young she will in the end be tossed like rolling waves.
- 浪滾濤
- Like rolling waves: roughly, drifting and unsettled.
Textual note: 「不夭終須浪滾濤」 breaks the rhyme (逢, 庸, 濤); there is probably a miscopied character.
A woman's Qing Yang meeting Huo Xing, Tian Ji, Ju Men and Hua Ji is ordinary; with unlucky malefic stars in the San Fang as well, if not dying young, drifting. 浪滾濤 literally means rolling waves, extended to a whole life of drifting; the collation note explains that the rhyme does not fit. Tian Ji and Ju Men appear here as in the woman's verse of the Wen Chang chapter; the ancients saw them as changeable and given to quarrels. With a strong personality and a restless, overthinking mind, in periods heavy with malefic stars life and love easily become unsteady, with frequent job changes and moves.
擎羊入男命吉凶訣:
15擎羊守限細推詳,四墓生人免災殃,若遇紫微昌府會,財官顯達福悠長。
TranslationWhen Qing Yang guards the luck period, work it out carefully: people born in the four tomb years escape disaster; if it meets Zi Wei, Wen Chang and Tian Fu, wealth and office rise high and blessings last long.
This group's heading says 'a man's chart', but its content is the luck periods, probably a copying error in the heading. Qing Yang guarding the luck period: people born in a four-tomb year escape disaster; meeting Zi Wei, Wen Chang and Tian Fu, wealth and office rise high. It is built almost exactly like the natal version in segment 10: a four-tomb birth year and Zi Wei and Tian Fu meeting it are the two keys that turn Qing Yang from unlucky to lucky. When reading a Decade Luck on Xingge, if its Life Palace or San Fang holds Qing Yang, check whether Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wen Chang or Wen Qu come in at the same time.
16天羅地網遇擎羊,二限沖兮禍患戕,若是命中主星弱,定教一疾夢黃泉。
TranslationMeeting Qing Yang in the Net of Heaven or the Snare of Earth, when the two luck periods clash, disaster and trouble do harm; if the main stars in the natal chart are weak, a single illness is sure to send one dreaming to the Yellow Springs.
- 天羅地網
- The Net of Heaven and the Snare of Earth: the Chen palace is the Net of Heaven, the Xu palace the Snare of Earth.
- 戕
- To harm, to kill.
The Net of Heaven and Snare of Earth are the Chen and Xu palaces, as the note says. There is an interesting fact on the chart here: Qing Yang can fall in Chen (Yi years) or Xu (Xin years), and Chen and Xu are exactly Qing Yang's temple positions. So a Qing Yang in its temple in the Net and Snare is called a wealth and office pattern in segment 6, while this verse says that when the two luck periods clash, disaster does harm. The two can stand together: the natal temple position is the foundation, and the clash in a luck period is the event. There is a further condition, 'the main stars of the natal chart are weak', which shows the Quan Shu builds its verdicts of death on the natal chart and the luck period being bad at the same time.
17擎羊加殺最為凶,二限休教落陷逢,剋子刑妻賣田莊,徙流貶配去從戎。
TranslationQing Yang with malefic stars added is most unlucky; let the two luck periods not meet it fallen. He harms his children and punishes his wife, sells his fields and farms, and is banished, demoted and sent off to serve in the army.
- 徙流貶配
- Banishment, demotion and exile: all punishments of old China.
- 從戎
- To join the army. Convicts in old China were often sent to serve as soldiers.
Qing Yang with malefic stars, fallen in the two luck periods, brings a whole chain of results: harming children and punishing the wife, selling the farm, banishment, demotion and exile, service in the army. In old China 從戎 here meant being sent to the army as a convict, a punishment, not enlisting as one might today. This verse brings Qing Yang's 'Punishment' down to the law: a luck period meeting a fallen Qing Yang with malefic stars easily brings lawsuits and penalties. Qing Yang and Tuo Luo Stacked says that when there is Qing Yang in the natal chart and the Annual Luck brings the annual Qing Yang and Tuo Luo as well, that is 'Qing Yang and Tuo Luo stacked' (Qing Yang and Tuo Luo Stacked), a concrete case of this verse. For such a period, the things to guard against are legal disputes and upheaval in family property.

FAQ
What does Qing Yang govern in the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu?
The Quan Shu says Qing Yang belongs to fire and metal, is a floating star of the Northern Dipper, and its transformed qi is 'Punishment'. In its temple it brings power and rank; the person is strong of body, coarse of build and marred in the face, hard and decisive, fond of fighting and bravado, scheming and cunning, makes a name by force, and can seize the power of gentlemen. Fallen in Mao or You, it causes disaster and calamity, maiming and illness.
In which palaces is Qing Yang in its temple?
The Quan Shu says Qing Yang is in its temple in the four tomb palaces Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, and it also likes people born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years, making a wealth and office pattern; it is fallen in Zi, Wu, Mao and You. Qing Yang only ever appears in eight palaces, Zi, Wu, Mao, You, Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei (the palace after Lu Cun); it is never found in Yin, Shen, Si or Hai.
Why does Qing Yang meeting the sun and moon harm a wife or husband?
The original says Qing Yang 「會日月男剋妻而女剋夫」: when Qing Yang meets the sun (Tai Yang) and the moon (Tai Yin), a man's chart harms his wife and a woman's chart her husband. That is the Quan Shu's wording, and it gives no further reason; the Tuo Luo chapter likewise says that Tuo Luo meeting the sun and moon and Hua Ji means a man harms his wife and a woman her husband.
What does 「擎羊一曜落閑宮,陀火沖兮便是凶」 mean?
It is a verse on Qing Yang in a man's chart: Qing Yang falling in an idle palace, a position where a star cannot show its strength, is unlucky when Tuo Luo and Huo Xing clash with it; and if the Body and Life Palaces also meet Di Jie and other malefic stars, 「定然夭絕在途中」: he is sure to die young, on the road. The idle palaces are a fixed table in the Quan Shu, separate from the brightness grades, and Qing Yang does not appear in it.
