What Does Qing Yang Govern?

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 1: Rhapsodies, questions on the stars, and chart patterns · Original text with translation

Introduction

This is the Qing Yang question in the Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun (Questions and Answers on the Stars) in volume one of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu: 「問擎羊星所主若何?」, what does Qing Yang govern? The chapter is two passages from Master Xiyi. Qing Yang is 「北斗之助星」, a helper star of the Northern Dipper. Guarding the Body or Life Palace, the person is coarse in nature and violent in conduct, alone, treats family as strangers and turns kindness into resentment; in its temple, he is firm and decisive, scheming and brave, and it means power and rank. The Quan Shu singles out Qing Yang in Mao and You, where it 「作禍興殃,刑剋極甚」, and says 「六甲六庚生人,必有凶禍」; even with wealth and rank, they do not last and the person does not die a good death. With Huo Xing, Hua Ji, Di Jie and Di Kong clashing and breaking it, there is disability, leaving the ancestral home, and harm to the six relations.

Under the placement rules, Qing Yang is in Mao only for people born in Jia years and in You only for people born in Geng years, so 'in Mao and You' and 'people born in Jia and Geng years' describe the same set of charts. The 'four tombs' are Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei.

TranslationMaster Xiyi answered: Qing Yang is a helper star of the Northern Dipper. Guarding the Body or Life Palace, the person is coarse in nature and violent in conduct, alone; he treats his family as strangers and turns kindness into resentment. In its temple, he is firm and decisive, scheming and brave, and it means power and rank. For people born in the north it is a blessing; for people born in the four tomb years it is not to be feared. In Mao or You it causes calamity and stirs up disaster, and its harm to family is extreme. People born in the six Jia and six Geng years are sure to meet disaster.

Turning kindness received into resentment.
People born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years.
People born in Jia or Geng years; Qing Yang is in Mao or You only in exactly those years.
Commentary

Qing Yang's transformed qi is punishment, and it is the hardest of the Six Malefic Stars. This passage first gives the bad side: coarse and violent, alone, treating family as strangers, turning kindness into resentment; then the side in its temple: firm and decisive, scheming and brave, power and rank. The two extremes of one star differ by brightness. Qing Yang is placed by the year stem in the palace right after Lu Cun, so it is only ever in the eight palaces Zi, Wu, Mao, You, Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, never in Yin, Shen, Si or Hai; on a Xingge chart, Qing Yang is Miao in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei and Xian in Zi, Wu, Mao and You.

「四墓生人不忌」 can mean people born in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei years, or Qing Yang sitting in one of the four tomb palaces; The Nature of Qing Yang mentions both. Mao and You are Qing Yang's fallen places, and it appears there only for people born in Jia and Geng years, so the original goes on, 「六甲六庚生人,必有凶禍」: two ways of saying the same thing. The Star Combinations chapter adds that Qing Yang in Zi, Wu, Mao or You means 「非夭折而刑傷」, with 「午凶卯次之」 (Star Combinations: Qing Yang and Tuo Luo).

TranslationEven with wealth and rank, they do not last, and he does not die a good death; if he is one of the nine trades or a craftsman, he toils hard. With Huo Xing, Hua Ji, Di Jie and Di Kong clashing and breaking it, there is disability, leaving the ancestral home, and harm to the six relations. A woman with Qing Yang in its temple and lucky stars added has an upper pattern; clashed and broken by malefic stars and 耗 (waste), it mostly means harm to family, a lower pattern.

善終
A good end: dying naturally of old age.
People who work at the various trades and crafts.
Commentary

「縱富貴不久亦不善終」 follows the last segment's Qing Yang in Mao and You, and is the outcome of a fallen Qing Yang. 「若九流工藝人辛勤」 is the way out the Quan Shu often offers to people with a malefic star in the Life Palace: a skilled trade is hard work but avoids the worst. Today this suggests work that needs hardness, blades or high pressure, such as technical trades, surgery, engineering, the military or the police.

The part on women is split into upper and lower patterns: in its temple with lucky stars, an upper pattern; clashed and broken by malefic stars and 耗, a lower one. The Quan Shu does not judge Qing Yang in a woman's chart as bad across the board, a point often overlooked. The book treats Qing Yang as a sign of wounds, surgery and accidents, and 「殘疾離祖刑剋六親」 needs Huo Xing, Hua Ji, Di Jie and Di Kong clashing and breaking it before it applies, which is no light condition.
