Where the chart lines up

Teaching young painters at the Académie Matisse

From 1907 to 1911, his friends organized and financed the Académie Matisse, a private and non-commercial school in which Matisse instructed young artists; the initiative came from the Steins, among others. In his chart, the Life Palace holds Tai Yang (Wang). Tai Yang is the star that gives off light and looks after others, which fits his spending time guiding young painters in their work.

The name "fauves" in 1905

At the 1905 Salon d'Automne (nominal age 37), the work of Matisse and his companions drew harsh criticism, and the critic Louis Vauxcelles wrote in the press of "Donatello chez les fauves" (Donatello among the wild beasts); the phrase spread, and the name Fauvism came from it. In 1905 his annual Life Palace was his natal Property Palace, and in that year's annual Four Transformations, Zi Wei (Wang) takes Hua Ke (Transformation of Fame) in the same palace. Hua Ke is reputation and being seen: that year's Hua Ke falling in that year's Life Palace matches the name spreading that year.

Friend and rival to Picasso

Around April 1906 he met Pablo Picasso, and the two became lifelong friends as well as rivals and are often compared; he and André Derain, with whom he led the Fauves, were also "friendly rivals". In his chart, the Siblings Palace holds Wu Qu (Miao) with Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) and Tan Lang (Miao) with Hua Quan (Transformation of Power). The Siblings Palace covers one's peers; Hua Lu is friendship and Hua Quan is contest. Peers who share both warmth and rivalry line up with these two relationships.
