Turning away from the family lighthouses
The Stevenson family business was designing lighthouses, and in 1867 he entered the University of Edinburgh to study engineering. In April 1871 he told his father he had decided to pursue literature, and in 1877, in An Apology for Idlers, he wrote that those who cannot be happy in the "handicap race for sixpenny pieces" should take their own "by-road". In his chart, the Life Palace holds Qi Sha (Miao). Qi Sha is often read as setting one's own direction; his turning down the family trade for a path of his own can be read alongside it.

On November 14, 1883 (nominal age 34), Treasure Island was published in book form by Cassell, becoming Stevenson's first work to succeed both in sales and with critics. In the annual Four Transformations of 1883, Po Jun (De) takes Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) into his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace covers career and work, and Hua Lu stands for gains; a book coming out and paying off that year fits this palace.

When Fanny met Stevenson she was already a writer of magazine short stories whose ability was recognized, and The Dynamiter of 1885 was a book the two openly wrote together. Later, in Samoa, Fanny took charge of running and farming the estate at Vailima. In his chart, the Spouse Palace holds Wu Qu (De) with Hua Quan (Transformation of Power).
