What is the Zuo Fu star?

The visible helper: steady support from peers.

On a chart, the main star sets the character of a palace, and the auxiliary stars decide whether anyone is standing beside you when you act there. Zuo Fu is the classic "you have help" star. It doesn't change who you are; it means that when you get to work, there is someone next to you who catches what you drop. To see which part of your life has this kind of support, draw your chart and find your Zuo Fu.

What kind of star is Zuo Fu

Zuo Fu is one of the , paired with You Bi. Xingge calls it "the visible helper": steady support and backing from peers, the kind you can see and call on. You Bi leans toward quiet help behind the scenes. One works in the open, the other out of sight.

How Zuo Fu is placed

Zuo Fu goes by your lunar birth month. The placement verse in volume two of the Quan Shu reads:

Zuo Fu starts the first month at Chen, and counts forward to the birth month, where honor lies.

Count the first month at Chen and move forward to your birth month: the first month is Chen, the second Si, and so on to the twelfth month at Mao. You Bi starts the first month at Xu and counts backward. Because one goes forward and the other backward, Zuo Fu and You Bi only share a palace (Wei or Chou) for people born in the fourth or tenth lunar month.

What the classics say

The Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun chapter in volume one describes Zuo Fu like this:

Zuo Fu is a star that serves the imperial pole. Guarding the Life or Body Palace, it brings blessings; the person is solid in appearance, generous and gracious.

"Serving the imperial pole" means Zuo Fu was originally the star that assists the emperor star, Zi Wei. A verse in the same volume puts it more bluntly: "without its ruler it is of no use; in the trines it should meet the ruler." Zuo Fu is at its best together with Zi Wei, or where it can see Zi Wei. Read for today: Zuo Fu's strength is greatest when it is put to work for a clear goal or a clear leader. Without a direction, even the best helper is just waiting around.

Zuo Fu in the Life Palace

With Zuo Fu in the Life Palace, whatever the main star is, it gains a layer of "easy to be around, well liked, people want to help." Practitioners tend to read it like this:

  • Generous with people. Steady by nature and not one to fight; on a team, often the one who keeps things moving smoothly.
  • Helpers tend to be peers. Classmates, colleagues and collaborators: more mutual support among equals than promotion from above.
  • Better at working together than alone. Zuo Fu's strengths only show up among people.

If the main star in the Life Palace is forceful, like Qi Sha or Po Jun, Zuo Fu gives that drive more backup. If the main star is gentler, like Tian Tong or Tian Liang, Zuo Fu makes that gentleness easier for others to accept. As always, read it together with the main star and the .

Zuo Fu in the twelve palaces

Wherever Zuo Fu sits, the affairs of that palace are easier to carry with someone else. A few placements people often ask about:

  • Spouse Palace: your partner is like a teammate; you divide the work and cover for each other. Volume two's section on the Spouse Palace says Zuo Fu and You Bi bring harmony into old age, which the ancients read as a lasting bond. There are also plenty of people around willing to give advice, though what happens between the two of you is still for the two of you to decide.
  • Wealth Palace: money often comes through cooperation, teams and introductions. Volume two says that with Zuo Fu and You Bi "every palace is well provided for, and with the auspicious stars you gain money through helpers."
  • Career Palace: steady support from colleagues or staff at work; well suited to being the backbone of a team.
  • Travel Palace: away from home, you tend to meet people willing to help. Volume two says Zuo Fu "on the move meets helpers and prospers": the more you move, the more chances you get.
  • Fortune Palace: a steadier mind. When something happens, you are less likely to stew over it alone and more likely to talk it through with someone.

The palace where Zuo Fu sits is also where you are willing to help others; support often runs both ways.

Zuo Fu and the four transformations

In the four-transformations verse Xingge follows, Zuo Fu takes none of the four transformations. Its partner You Bi takes Hua Ke in Wu years (see You Bi Hua Ke). Some schools give Zuo Fu Hua Ke in Ren years; that comes from a different version of the verse. In volume two of the Quan Shu, Tian Fu takes Hua Ke that year, and Xingge follows that version. To find your own birth-year transformations, use the birth-year transformations lookup.

Common combinations with Zuo Fu

  • Zuo Fu and You Bi in the same palace: both visible and quiet help gather in one place. Only people born in the fourth or tenth lunar month have this.
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi flanking a palace: the two sit on either side of a palace, like two neighbors protecting the one in the middle, which the ancients valued highly. The flanking palaces lesson covers it in full.
  • Jun Chen Qing Hui (ruler and ministers meet): Zi Wei in the Life Palace, with Zuo Fu and You Bi in the Life Palace or its San Fang Si Zheng. The emperor has people to rely on; one of the best-known noble patterns.

How these combinations form, and what weakens them, is covered in the lessons on the Six Auspicious Stars and good patterns.

Common questions

What does the Zuo Fu star represent?

Zuo Fu is one of the Six Auspicious Stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu. It stands for steady, visible help, especially support from peers, colleagues and collaborators. It doesn't change the character of a palace; it makes that palace's affairs easier to carry with someone else.

What is the difference between Zuo Fu and You Bi?

They are a pair. Zuo Fu leans toward visible, out-in-the-open help; You Bi leans toward quiet help and smoothing things over behind the scenes. Zuo Fu counts forward from Chen by birth month, You Bi counts backward from Xu, so the two only share a palace for people born in the fourth or tenth lunar month.

Is Zuo Fu good in the Life Palace?

Practitioners usually read Zuo Fu in the Life Palace as a plus: generous with people, well liked, and likely to have support. It suits working together more than going it alone, and how it actually plays out depends on the main star and the San Fang Si Zheng.

Does Zuo Fu take Hua Ke?

Xingge follows the four-transformations verse in volume two of the Quan Shu, in which Zuo Fu takes none of the four transformations and You Bi takes Hua Ke in Wu years. Other schools use different versions, so other chart software may show Zuo Fu with Hua Ke.
