What is the Tian Yue star?
The nighttime noble: low-key, private help.
Not every noble helper stands on a stage. Sometimes someone sends a quiet message, or puts in a good word when you aren't in the room, and things turn in your favor. Tian Yue is about that kind of low-key help. It pairs with Tian Kui, and together they are called the Tian Yi nobles, one in the open and one out of sight. What kind of star is Tian Yue
Tian Yue is one of the Six Auspicious Stars. Xingge calls it "the nighttime noble": low-key, private, unshowy help, with a touch of romantic charm. Tian Kui is the yang noble and Tian Yue the yin noble; read the two together to see how your helpers tend to appear.
How Tian Yue is placed
Like Tian Kui, Tian Yue goes by the stem of your birth year. The verse is in volume two of the Quan Shu ("Jia, Wu and Geng: the ox and the goat. Yi and Ji: the rat and the monkey. Xin: the tiger and the horse."). Spelled out:
- Jia, Wu and Geng years: Tian Yue in Wei (Tian Kui in Chou).
- Yi and Ji years: Tian Yue in Shen (Tian Kui in Zi).
- Xin years: Tian Yue in Yin (Tian Kui in Wu).
- Ren and Gui years: Tian Yue in Si (Tian Kui in Mao).
- Bing and Ding years: Tian Yue in You (Tian Kui in Hai).
Tian Yue only ever lands in Yin, Si, Wei, Shen or You, and like Tian Kui it never enters Chen or Xu. Everyone born in the same year has Tian Yue in the same branch, so which palace it falls in depends on where your Life Palace is.
What the classics say
Volume one of the Quan Shu discusses Kui and Yue together:
Kui and Yue are the stars that oversee rank and exams. In the Life Palace, sitting with a noble and facing a noble, or joined by Zuo Fu, You Bi and the auspicious stars, there is always wealth and standing.
The same passage calls the two "spirits of harmony in the heavens," and says that in great difficulty they "bring a noble who helps you through." Harmony is exactly Tian Yue's flavor: not help handed down from a position of power, but the kind that brings people and things together.
Tian Yue in the Life Palace
With Tian Yue in the Life Palace, the main star gains a layer of "someone is quietly looking out for you." Practitioners tend to read it like this:
- Gentle charm. Not necessarily the most eye-catching person in the room, but someone people want to help.
- Opportunities come privately. Internal referrals, introductions through friends and invitations by private message often matter more than open calls.
- A touch of romantic charm. At ease with people you might be attracted to, and more likely to get help from them.
One thing to keep in mind: private help also means private favors, and favors are worth repaying.
Tian Yue in the twelve palaces
- Spouse Palace: a gentle relationship, or love that starts through a friend's introduction. Volume two's section on the Spouse Palace says Tian Kui and Tian Yue "mostly mean a handsome couple."
- Career Palace: someone at work often gives you a push from behind; plenty of internal moves and private recommendations.
- Wealth Palace: money often comes through goodwill, introductions and private deals. Volume two says Kui and Yue "bring money with integrity."
- Travel Palace: away from home, you tend to meet people willing to look after you, and feel less alone somewhere new.
- Friends Palace: someone in your circle quietly has your back and will step forward at the key moment.
- Fortune Palace: a stronger inner sense of security; the world feels less cold.
Tian Yue and the four transformations
Tian Yue takes none of the four transformations. Like Tian Kui, it is often read together with Hua Ke: when Tian Yue and Hua Ke share a palace or face the same palace, private praise more easily turns into public recognition. What Hua Ke means is covered in the Hua Quan and Hua Ke lesson.
Some schools read Kui and Yue by day and night: Tian Kui is said to show more for people born in the daytime, and Tian Yue for people born at night. The Quan Shu makes no such split, and neither do Xingge's readings; the two are read together.
Common combinations with Tian Yue
- Zuo Gui Xiang Gui (sitting with a noble, facing a noble): Tian Kui and Tian Yue sit one in the Life Palace and one in the opposite palace. Only people born in Jia, Wu or Geng years with the Life Palace in Chou or Wei have this.
- Kui and Yue flanking a palace: Tian Kui and Tian Yue sit on either side of a palace. This only happens in Bing, Ding, Ren and Gui years, and the flanked palace is Xu or Chen.
- Tian Yue with Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang and Wen Qu: the more of the Six Auspicious Stars gather, the more complete the help.
The full reading is in the Six Auspicious Stars lesson, and how flanking works is in the flanking palaces lesson.
Common questions
What does the Tian Yue star represent?
Tian Yue is one of the Six Auspicious Stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu, which the ancients called a Tian Yi noble. It stands for low-key, private help, with a touch of romantic charm. In whichever palace it sits, someone is more likely to give you a push from behind in that area.
What is the difference between Tian Yue and Tian Kui?
Tian Kui is the yang noble: open promotion from people who are older and established. Tian Yue is the yin noble: low-key, private, personal help. Both are placed by the birth-year stem and are usually read together.
What does Tian Yue in the Spouse Palace mean?
Practitioners often read it as a gentle relationship, or love that starts through friends or acquaintances. The classics say Kui and Yue in the Spouse Palace mean an outstanding partner; today it is usually read as two people who look after each other.
Does Tian Yue take Hua Ke?
No. Tian Yue takes none of the four transformations, but it carries a sense of rank and recognition, so when it shares a palace with Hua Ke, or faces the same palace, private praise more easily becomes public recognition.
