Some help you can see: someone puts their name to it, someone steps forward. Some happens where you never notice, when someone puts in a good word for you. You Bi is about the second kind: help in private, smoothing things over between people, someone stepping in at the key moment. It pairs with Zuo Fu, one in the open and one out of sight. What kind of star is You Bi

You Bi is one of the . Xingge calls it "the quiet helper." Its help doesn't always come with fanfare, but it tends to show up exactly when needed. It also stands for your own willingness to smooth things over for others behind the scenes.

How You Bi is placed

You Bi goes by your lunar birth month, in the opposite direction from Zuo Fu. The placement verse in volume two of the Quan Shu reads:

You Bi finds the first month at Xu, and counts backward from there.

Count the first month at Xu and move backward: the first month is Xu, the second You, the third Shen, and so on to the twelfth month at Hai. Because one counts forward and the other backward, Zuo Fu and You Bi sit symmetrically around the Chou–Wei axis, and they only share a palace (Wei or Chou) for people born in the fourth or tenth lunar month.

What the classics say

The Zhu Xing Wen Da Lun chapter in volume one says:

You Bi is a star that serves the imperial pole. Guarding the Life or Body Palace, it brings mastery of letters.

Volume two adds that You Bi "at Miao is solid, refined and upright, generous and forgiving, fond of helping others, and resourceful." Put the two together and You Bi looks like this: attentive, tactful, caring, and good at getting things to work out. Like Zuo Fu, it is at its best near the emperor star, Zi Wei, filling in wherever the leader needs it.

You Bi in the Life Palace

With You Bi in the Life Palace, the main star gains a layer of "attentive and good with people." Practitioners tend to read it like this:

  • Good at coordinating. Not always out front, but very good at bringing people and plans together behind the scenes.
  • Helpers turn up in unexpected places. A friend of a friend, someone you met by chance: often they are the one who makes the difference.
  • Soft-hearted. Quick to step in when others are struggling, so it is worth keeping an eye on your own limits.

If the main star is on the tougher side, like Wu Qu or Qi Sha, You Bi adds warmth. If the main star is already attentive, like Tai Yin or Tian Ji, You Bi makes that attentiveness win people over.

You Bi in the twelve palaces

  • Spouse Palace: an unspoken understanding between partners, who look out for each other in small ways. Volume two's section on the Spouse Palace says Zuo Fu and You Bi bring harmony into old age, which the ancients read as a lasting bond.
  • Wealth Palace: money often comes through goodwill, introductions and private deals, not necessarily big public projects.
  • Career Palace: quiet support at work. Volume two says You Bi "with Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wen Chang and Wen Qu brings both wealth and position."
  • Travel Palace: volume two says You Bi "away from home meets helpers and thrives; it should not stay put." The further you go, the more help you find.
  • Fortune Palace: a stronger inner sense of security, and when the pressure is on, you know who to talk to.

You Bi and the four transformations

Xingge follows the four-transformations verse in volume two of the Quan Shu, in which You Bi takes Hua Ke in Wu years (the same year Tian Ji takes Hua Ji; see Wu-year transformations). Hua Ke is about reputation, dignity and being seen. You Bi Hua Ke can be read as quiet help coming to light: a contribution made behind the scenes gets recognized. The full twelve-palace reading is on the You Bi Hua Ke page, and what Hua Ke itself means is covered in the Hua Quan and Hua Ke lesson.

In Xingge's version, Zuo Fu takes no transformation. Other schools use different versions of the verse, so other chart software may show something different.

Common combinations with You Bi

  • Zuo Fu and You Bi in the same palace: visible and quiet help both gather here.
  • Zuo Fu and You Bi flanking a palace: the two stars sit on either side of a palace, and that palace's affairs are protected.
  • Jun Chen Qing Hui (ruler and ministers meet): Zi Wei in the Life Palace with both Zuo Fu and You Bi present; the emperor has people to rely on.

The conditions for these combinations, and what weakens them, are covered in the Six Auspicious Stars lesson. Classical texts say You Bi's help is weakened when it meets Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie; compare with the Six Malefic Stars lesson.

Common questions

What does the You Bi star represent?

You Bi is one of the Six Auspicious Stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu. It stands for help in private, smoothing things over between people, and someone stepping in at the key moment. It pairs with Zuo Fu: Zuo Fu leans toward visible support, You Bi toward quiet help behind the scenes.

What does You Bi Hua Ke mean?

In the four-transformations verse Xingge follows, people born in Wu years have You Bi Hua Ke. Hua Ke stands for reputation and being seen, so You Bi Hua Ke can be read as quiet contributions being recognized and behind-the-scenes help coming to light, in whichever palace it lands.

How is You Bi placed?

You Bi goes by the lunar birth month: count the first month at Xu, then backward to your birth month. The first month is Xu, the second You, and so on. Zuo Fu counts forward from Chen, so the two only share a palace for people born in the fourth or tenth month.

Is You Bi good in the Spouse Palace?

Volume two of the Quan Shu says Zuo Fu and You Bi bring harmony into old age, which the ancients read as a lasting bond. Today it is often read as an unspoken understanding between partners who look out for each other in small ways; people around you also tend to support the relationship, though what happens between the two of you is still yours to work out.
