What is Body Palace?
On this page
The Body Palace in Zi Wei Dou Shu is the position on the chart that marks where you put more and more effort as life goes on; it isn't a thirteenth palace but a label attached to one of the twelve. The Life Palace describes your first instinct, while the Body Palace describes the theme you keep coming back to and working at all your life. Once your chart is cast, the palace marked "Body" is your Body Palace; you can see it when you draw your free chart.
The short version:
- Formula: the Body Palace = start the Zi hour at your birth-month palace and count clockwise to your birth hour. The Life Palace uses the same start, counting counterclockwise.
- Only the hour matters: which palace the Body Palace lands in depends on the birth hour alone, not the month.
- Only six positions: the Life, Fortune, Career, Travel, Wealth and Spouse Palaces. Born in the Zi or Wu hour, Life and Body share a palace.
- How to read it: the Life Palace is your inborn base; the Body Palace is where effort builds up later. Set their main stars side by side.
How the Body Palace is found
The Body Palace and the Life Palace start from the same point and go in opposite directions. Volume two of the Quan Shu says:
In general, everyone's chart starts the first month at Yin and counts forward to the birth month; then from the birth month, start the Zi hour and count backward to the birth hour to place the Life Palace, and forward to the birth hour to place the Body Palace.
In plain terms: starting from the Yin palace as the first month, count clockwise to your lunar birth month. From that palace, treated as the Zi hour, count counterclockwise to your birth hour for the Life Palace, and clockwise to your birth hour for the Body Palace.
Because one count goes backward and the other forward, the distance between the Life and Body Palaces depends only on the birth hour, not the month. A worked example: born in the fourth lunar month at the You hour. Counting from Yin to the fourth month lands on Si. Starting the Zi hour at Si and counting counterclockwise to the You hour stops at Shen, so the Life Palace is in Shen; counting clockwise to the You hour stops at Yin, so the Body Palace is in Yin. Naming palaces from Shen, Yin is the Travel Palace, matching "You hour: Body in Travel" in the table below.
| Step | Direction | 4th month, You hour |
|---|---|---|
| Yin = month 1, count to birth month | clockwise | stops at Si |
| From there, Zi hour to birth hour | counterclockwise | Shen: Life Palace |
| From there, Zi hour to birth hour | clockwise | Yin: Body Palace |
Birth hour and Body Palace table
The twelve double-hours pair up, so the Body Palace can only land in six places, each matched to a pair of hours:
| Birth hour | Clock time | Body Palace in | From the Life Palace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi, Wu | 23–1, 11–13 | Life (shared) | same palace |
| Chou, Wei | 1–3, 13–15 | Fortune | 2 clockwise |
| Yin, Shen | 3–5, 15–17 | Career | 4 clockwise |
| Mao, You | 5–7, 17–19 | Travel | straight across |
| Chen, Xu | 7–9, 19–21 | Wealth | 4 counterclockwise |
| Si, Hai | 9–11, 21–23 | Spouse | 2 counterclockwise |
"From the Life Palace" counts branches starting at the Life Palace. The table shows something: the six palaces the Body Palace can fall in are the Life Palace itself, the rest of its San Fang Si Zheng (Travel, Wealth, Career), plus Fortune and Spouse. The palaces the old writers cared most about are exactly where the Body Palace can be. For hour boundaries and the late Zi hour, see double-hours.
This table is handy in reverse: if you're unsure of your birth hour, ask yourself what you've put the most effort into all your life, and see which hour fits better. More examples are in the lesson Life Palace and Body Palace.
How to read the Body Palace in each position
These are common readings among practitioners; they're tendencies, not rules:
| Body Palace in | Common tendency | Look harder at |
|---|---|---|
| Life | thought and action match | the Life star itself |
| Fortune | cares more about inner ease | interests, inner life |
| Career | work is identity | kind of work, achievement |
| Travel | grows by changing scene | going out, social settings |
| Wealth | tuned to money, resources | earning, spending |
| Spouse | relationships run deep | partners, collaborators |
- Life and Body together: what you think and what you do line up closely. A vivid personality that stays very much itself, though it less often looks at things from another angle.
- Body in Fortune: cares more and more about inner comfort, and once income is steady, often spends time on interests and inner life.
- Body in Career: work and identity are tied together, and changing jobs feels like changing who you are.
- Body in Travel: new places and wider horizons feed you, and staying in one place too long gets stifling.
- Body in Wealth: especially attuned to how money and resources are arranged, and likes the accounts to be clear.
- Body in Spouse: close relationships have a big influence and you're willing to put work into them; a partner's single remark often changes your decision.
When reading, set the main star in the Body Palace next to the one in the Life Palace. If the two are similar, the person tends to stay consistent over time; if they differ a lot, there's often a clear change of direction at some stage.
Reading one chart
Say someone was born in the third lunar month at the Yin hour. Counting from Yin, the third month is Chen. Starting the Zi hour at Chen and counting counterclockwise to the Yin hour gives Yin, so the Life Palace is in Yin; counting clockwise gives Wu, so the Body Palace is in Wu, the Career Palace. Now suppose Zi Wei sits in Yin on this chart:
- Life Palace in Yin, Zi Wei and Tian Fu: steady by nature, self-assured, used to holding things together.
- Body Palace in Wu (Career), Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang: more and more effort goes into work over the years, with a care for structure, boundaries and doing things properly.
Both palaces lean steady and responsible, so this person stays quite consistent: reliable when young, and with age, "getting it right" becomes part of who they are. If the Life Palace held a lively, changeable star while the Body Palace still held Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang, the reading would become "tried many things when young, settled down through work later."
Using the Body Palace to check your birth hour
If you were born near the boundary between two double-hours and aren't sure which, the Body Palace is a handy check. For two neighboring hours, the Life Palace shifts one palace and the Body Palace shifts one the other way, so the Body Palace always lands in a different named palace. Say you were born in the first lunar month around 11 a.m., which could be the Si hour or the Wu hour:
| Candidate hour | Life Palace | Body Palace | Ask yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Si | You | Wei, Spouse | does life revolve around partners? |
| Wu | Shen | Shen, shared | always very much yourself? |
Cast both charts and hold the Life Palace star and the Body Palace reading up against your own life; usually one fits clearly better. This is only a helper. A birth certificate or a family record is still the most reliable, and the details of hour boundaries are on double-hours.
Body Palace, Life Palace and Body Master
The three names look alike but are three different things:
| Life Palace | Body Palace | Body Master | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | a palace | a label on a palace | a star |
| How it's found | month + hour, backward | month + hour, forward | birth-year branch table |
| What it shows | your inborn base | where effort goes later | a later-life marker star |
| Possible places | any of twelve | only six palaces | not a position |
The Body Master is a star set by the branch of your birth year, while the Body Palace is a palace on the chart. One is a star, the other a room; only the names are alike. When the classics say "next look at the Body Master," they mean that star, not the Body Palace.
What the classics say, and how we read it today
The Tai Wei Fu opens by placing body and life side by side:
In general, the Body and Life Palaces are the root of fortune, and the origins add the means of success or hardship.
Volume three also compares the two in one line: when both Body and Life are auspicious, wealth and honor come together. The old writers never read the Life Palace alone; the Body Palace was always read with it.
Many teachers say the Body Palace "shows more after middle age." That line isn't in the Quan Shu; it's later practitioners' experience. An easier way to understand it: when young, most people live by their natural reactions; after many choices, those choices gradually push you toward the Body Palace. Reading it at twenty you may feel nothing, but looking back at forty it often seems very familiar.
If the Body Palace falls in an Empty Palace, borrow the main stars opposite as usual, and read it together with that palace's San Fang Si Zheng.
FAQ
How do you find the Body Palace?
Start from the Yin palace as the first month and count clockwise to your lunar birth month. From there, treating it as the Zi hour, count clockwise to your birth hour; that palace is the Body Palace. The Life Palace uses the same start but counts counterclockwise. Or use the table: Zi and Wu hours in the Life Palace, Chou and Wei in Fortune, Yin and Shen in Career, Mao and You in Travel, Chen and Xu in Wealth, Si and Hai in Spouse.
What is the difference between the Body Palace and the Life Palace?
The Life Palace shows your inborn character and first reactions; the Body Palace shows the direction you put more and more effort into later. Both are counted from the same starting point, one counterclockwise and one clockwise to the birth hour, so the distance between them depends only on the hour.
Why does the Body Palace only fall in six palaces?
Because its distance from the Life Palace depends only on the birth hour, and the twelve hours pair up into six positions: the Life, Fortune, Career, Travel, Wealth and Spouse Palaces. People born in the Zi or Wu hour have the Body Palace in the same palace as the Life Palace, called Life and Body together.
What does it mean when the Life and Body Palaces are together?
For people born in the Zi or Wu hour, the Life and Body Palaces fall in the same palace. Practitioners often read this as thoughts and actions lining up closely, with a vivid personality that stays very much itself over the years. The thing to watch is looking at things from other angles less often.
What does the Body Palace in the Career Palace mean?
People born in the Yin or Shen hour have the Body Palace in the Career Palace. The common reading is that work and identity are tied together, so changing jobs feels like changing who you are. Set the Career Palace's main star beside the Life Palace's and see whether they agree or pull apart.
Is the Body Palace the same as the Body Master?
No. The Body Palace is a palace on the chart, found from your birth month and hour. The Body Master is a star, looked up from the branch of your birth year. The names are similar, but one is a room and the other is a star.
Does the Body Palace only show after middle age?
"It shows more after middle age" is later practitioners' experience, not a line from the Quan Shu. A better way to see it: the Body Palace describes where your choices slowly add up, so it feels faint when young and familiar looking back. The old writers always read the Life and Body Palaces together, at any age.
