What is Zi Wei Dou Shu and Ba Zi?
On this page
Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology) and Ba Zi (the Four Pillars of Destiny) both start from the year, month, day and hour you were born, but they are two separate systems. Zi Wei lays your life out as twelve palaces and reads stars and transformations to tell you which area of life is moving, and when. Ba Zi writes your birth as eight characters and reads the balance of the five elements to tell you what supports you and what each ten-year stretch is about. They complement each other; neither replaces the other.
The short version:
- Zi Wei reads areas of life: Life, Wealth, Career, Spouse and the other palaces each cover one part of life, and the Decade Luck moves to a new palace every ten years.
- Ba Zi reads the five elements: the Day Master is you, and the other seven characters either feed or check it, which gives your favorable elements and a luck pillar every ten years.
- The year changes on different days: Zi Wei starts the year on Lunar New Year; Ba Zi starts it at Li Chun, the Start of Spring. If you were born between the two, the systems can disagree on your birth year.
- What reading both adds: Ba Zi fills in the element balance Zi Wei says little about, such as the kind of work environment that suits you and how to pace your daily life.
- When they disagree: treat one as the main reading and the other as a supplement. Don't pit them against each other.
How the two systems differ
| Zi Wei Dou Shu | Ba Zi | |
|---|---|---|
| What the chart looks like | Twelve palaces, each holding stars | Four pillars: year, month, day, hour |
| Main focus | Stars, brightness, where the transformations land | Day Master strength, favorable elements, the Ten Gods |
| New year | Lunar New Year | Li Chun (Start of Spring) |
| New month | First day of the lunar month | Solar terms |
| Ten-year periods | Decade Luck, starting at an age set by the Five Element Bureau | Luck pillars, starting at an age set by the days to the nearest solar term |
| Best at | Personality, each area of life, timing | Element balance, the right environment, each decade's theme |
Both systems talk about the five elements, but not in the same way. Zi Wei's Five Element Bureau comes from the sound element of your Life Palace's stem and branch, and only sets the age your first Decade Luck begins. Ba Zi's elements are the wood, fire, earth, metal and water in your eight characters, used to judge how strong your Day Master is. A Water 2 Bureau does not mean your Ba Zi lacks water; the two can't be read across.
Why the same birthday can give two different years
The year pillar is where most confusion starts. Zi Wei follows the lunar calendar, so the new year begins on Lunar New Year. Ba Zi follows the solar terms, so it begins at Li Chun, around February 4. The two dates are usually a few days to just over two weeks apart, and anyone born in that gap gets a different year in each system.
Take a birthday of February 3, 2001. Lunar New Year fell on January 24, so Zi Wei already counts it as a Xin Si year. Li Chun was on February 4, so Ba Zi still counts it as a Geng Chen year, with the month pillar still in Ji Chou. Neither is wrong; they follow different rules. If your birthday sits right next to a solar term and you aren't sure of the hour, your Ba Zi month pillar may shift, so read the Ba Zi side more loosely.
Both systems use the twelve two-hour periods for the hour. If you only know roughly when you were born, check which Chinese hour it falls in first.
What Ba Zi adds when you read both
Zi Wei is detailed about the areas of life, but it rarely answers "what kind of environment suits me?" or "what is this decade asking of me?" directly. Those happen to be Ba Zi's strengths.
Favorable elements: the right environment
Ba Zi first asks whether your Day Master, the stem of the day you were born, is strong or weak, and from that decides which elements help you. If water is favorable, folk tradition says fast-moving fields like trade, logistics and travel come more easily; if metal is favorable, finance, law and engineering fit better. This isn't a reason to change jobs. It's one more thing to weigh when you choose where to take the direction Zi Wei gives you.
The Ten Gods in your luck pillars: each decade's theme
Ba Zi luck pillars change every ten years, and the Ten God each pillar carries is that decade's theme. Wealth stars bring more money matters and opportunities; Officer stars bring responsibility and chances to move up; Resource stars bring learning and mentors; Output stars bring expression and creative work; Companion stars bring friends and partners. This sits alongside Zi Wei's Decade Luck: the Decade Luck tells you which area of life the decade centers on, and the luck pillar tells you what the decade is asking you to practise.
Compatibility: the day pillars
When two people compare charts, Zi Wei looks at which of your palaces their Life Palace falls in and where each person's Hua Lu and Hua Ji land. Ba Zi adds how the two Day Masters feed, check or combine with each other, and whether the day branches, traditionally the spouse position, combine or clash. A clash usually points to different routines and habits that need talking through if you live together. It is not a verdict on the relationship.
When the two systems disagree
This is the most common question. We compared the same charts both ways: if you only ask "is this decade favorable or tight?", Zi Wei's Decade Luck and Ba Zi's luck pillars agree only about a third of the time. The two systems start from different places and measure different things, so disagreement is normal. It doesn't mean either one got it wrong.
We also tested AI readings on 200 multiple-choice questions from a fortune-telling competition held from 2022 to 2026. Given only the Zi Wei chart, the AI got 28% right; adding Ba Zi raised that to 32%, which is within the margin of error. Stacking a second system does not automatically make predictions more accurate.
A better way to read both:
- Pick one as the main reading. Xingge leads with Zi Wei Dou Shu and uses Ba Zi as a supplement.
- Use Ba Zi for what it adds: favorable elements, each decade's theme, and the day pillars in compatibility. Zi Wei says less about these.
- Pay attention when the two agree. If your Decade Luck leans favorable and your luck pillar runs on favorable elements, that decade is a good time to take the initiative. If both lean tight, put foundations first.
- Don't force a match when they don't. Read it the main system's way and treat the other as a reminder.
On the chart page, each segment of the Decade Luck timeline shows the theme of your Ba Zi luck pillar for those years, with one extra line when the two systems agree.
FAQ
Which is more accurate, Zi Wei Dou Shu or Ba Zi?
There is no settled answer, because they are good at different things. Zi Wei describes personality, each area of life and timing; Ba Zi describes element balance and each decade's theme. Rather than asking which is more accurate, pick one as your main system and use the other for what it covers better.
Why do Zi Wei and Ba Zi give me a different birth year?
Zi Wei starts the year on Lunar New Year and Ba Zi starts it at Li Chun, the Start of Spring, around February 4. If you were born between those two dates, your year pillar differs by one and your month pillar may differ too. Both are calculated correctly; they just follow different rules.
Can I get a Ba Zi chart if I only know my birth hour roughly?
Yes. The Ba Zi hour pillar works in two-hour periods, so knowing which period you were born in is enough. The case to watch is a birthday right next to a solar term, where a small error in the birth time can change the month pillar.
Is the Ba Zi five-element balance the same as the Zi Wei Five Element Bureau?
No. The Zi Wei Five Element Bureau comes from the sound element of your Life Palace's stem and branch and only sets when your first Decade Luck begins. The Ba Zi elements are the wood, fire, earth, metal and water in your eight characters, used to judge your Day Master's strength and favorable elements. One can't be converted into the other.
How are favorable elements worked out in Ba Zi?
Start with whether your Day Master is strong or weak. A weak Day Master is helped by Resource and Companion elements; a strong one is balanced by Output, Wealth and Officer elements that drain, use or check it. If you were born in high summer or deep winter with very little water or fire, climate balance comes first. Xingge uses this simplified method and marks the result as a guide.
