Star Combinations: Huo Xing and Ling Xing
〈論諸星同垣:火星鈴星〉
The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 3: Reading a life and its luck periods · Original text with translation
Introduction
This page is the Huo Xing and Ling Xing part of the star-combination chapter in volume three of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, only six lines.
There are two brightness lines: Huo Xing and Ling Xing are both Miao (Temple) in Yin, Wu and Xu, De (Gain) in Si, You and Chou, and Xian (Fallen) in Shen, Zi and Chen, the same as Xingge (which also grades Mao, Wei and Hai as Li).
The verdicts: Huo Xing and Ling Xing meeting, 「名振諸邦」, famed in all lands; Huo Xing and Ling Xing flanking the Life Palace, a ruined pattern, with the note's example of a Life Palace in Yin, Huo Xing in Chou and Ling Xing in Mao; Huo Xing and Ling Xing in Wang palaces, also judged as blessed; Qing Yang with Huo Xing and Ling Xing, a low pattern, acceptable for a woman in Miao or Wang positions but base, poor and short-lived in fallen ones.
The last clause of the note on the third line, 「辰凶歲限巡遊者此地亦吉」, does not connect with the rest and is translated word for word.
1火星 廟寅午戌 地巳酉丑 陷申子辰
TranslationHuo Xing's brightness: Miao in Yin, Wu and Xu; De in Si, You and Chou; Xian in Shen, Zi and Chen.
- 廟
- Miao (Temple): the position where a star works best.
- 陷
- Xian (Fallen): a position where the star has no strength.
- 地
- De (Gain): in a position that suits it.
Huo Xing's brightness table matches Xingge's, which also grades Hai, Mao and Wei as Li. The table follows the Five Elements of the trines exactly: Yin, Wu and Xu form the fire trine, where Huo Xing is Miao; Si, You and Chou form the metal trine, which fire overcomes, so it is De; Shen, Zi and Chen form the water trine, and water overcomes fire, so it falls. Huo Xing is placed by the birth-year branch and the birth hour; it belongs to fire and governs impatience and outbursts. For Huo Xing's character as a whole, see The Nature of Huo Xing.
2火鈴相遇名振諸邦
TranslationHuo Xing and Ling Xing meeting: the name shakes all lands.
Huo Xing and Ling Xing are both placed by the birth-year branch and the hour, and 'meeting' means sharing a palace or meeting from the San Fang. The Gu Sui Fu has 「貪狼火星居廟旺名鎮諸邦」 (segment 25), almost the same words, with Tan Lang and Huo Xing as the subject. Read together, the two lines say that the explosive force of Huo Xing and Ling Xing, well matched, spreads one's name far. In modern terms, someone who moves fast, dares to take risks and can produce results in a short time.
3火鈴夾命為敗局 如命安寅申,火星在丑,鈴星在卯。吉多尚可,惟夾忌。辰凶歲限巡遊者此地亦吉
TranslationHuo Xing and Ling Xing flanking the Life Palace: a ruined pattern. (Note) For example, the Life Palace placed in Yin (Shen), Huo Xing in Chou, Ling Xing in Mao. With many lucky stars it is still acceptable; only flanking Hua Ji is feared. 'Chen unlucky; a year or luck period passing through, this place is lucky too' (the sense does not connect).
Huo Ling Jia Ming (Huo Xing and Ling Xing flanking the Life Palace); the note's example is the Life Palace in Yin with Huo Xing in Chou and Ling Xing in Mao. Flanking is the force of the two neighbouring palaces pressing on the one between, and Huo Xing and Ling Xing are malefic, so flanking the Life Palace is a ruined pattern. The note says many lucky stars make it still acceptable and only flanking Hua Ji is feared, meaning Hua Ji in the Life Palace flanked by the two. The latter part, 「辰凶歲限巡遊者此地亦吉」, does not connect, and the translation leaves it in doubt. On a chart, check whether the two palaces on either side of the Life Palace hold Huo Xing on one side and Ling Xing on the other.
4鈴星 廟寅午戌 地巳酉丑 陷申子辰
TranslationLing Xing's brightness: Miao in Yin, Wu and Xu; De in Si, You and Chou; Xian in Shen, Zi and Chen.
- 廟
- Miao (Temple): the position where a star works best.
- 陷
- Xian (Fallen): a position where the star has no strength.
Ling Xing's brightness table is identical to Huo Xing's, and so is Xingge's. The Quan Shu often treats the two as a pair: Huo Xing more visible and quicker to flare, Ling Xing more hidden and slower to act, but their brightness and their verdicts are broadly the same. The next line of the original is the heading 「火鈴旺宮亦為福論」: Huo Xing and Ling Xing in Miao or Wang positions in Yin, Wu and Xu are also judged as blessed, the same logic as the Huo Tan and Ling Tan patterns on the Tan Lang page of this chapter.
火鈴旺宮亦為福論
6擎羊火鈴為下格 女人廟旺猶可,陷地下賤,貧窮夭折。
TranslationQing Yang, Huo Xing and Ling Xing: a low pattern. (Note) For a woman, in Miao or Wang positions it is still acceptable; in fallen positions, base, poor and dying young.
Qing Yang, Huo Xing and Ling Xing together make a low pattern; the note says that for a woman Miao or Wang is still acceptable, while fallen positions mean baseness, poverty and an early death. The line matches 「擎羊火星為下格」 on the Qing Yang and Tuo Luo page, where the opposite verdict, Qing Yang and Huo Xing in one palace overawing the crowd, also appears. Charts with all three malefic stars in one palace are uncommon, since Qing Yang appears in only eight palaces and Huo Xing and Ling Xing each have their own hour-based positions. The harsh words are kept as written; when all the conditions do hold, the Life Palace is under real pressure.
