Star Combinations: Po Jun
〈論諸星同垣:破軍〉
The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 3: Reading a life and its luck periods · Original text with translation
Introduction
This page is the Po Jun part of the star-combination chapter in volume three of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, only seven lines.
The first line gives the brightness: Po Jun is Miao (Temple) in Zi and Wu, Wang (Prosperous) in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, and Xian (Fallen) in Mao and You, the same as Xingge (which also grades Yin and Shen as De and Si and Hai as Ping).
The verdicts: Po Jun in Zi or Wu without malefic stars, 「官資清顯至三公」, an office pure and eminent, rising to the Three Dukes (later called the heroic star in its temple); Po Jun and Tan Lang meeting Lu Cun and Tian Ma, 「男多浪蕩女多淫」, men often dissolute, women often lewd; Po Jun with Ju Men in the same place, 「水中作塚」, a grave in the water, where the original note itself says Po Jun and Ju Men never share a palace and suggests shining on the Life Palace or the Travel Palace instead; Po Jun with Huo Xing and Ling Xing, 「奔波勞碌」, rushing about and toiling; Po Jun, 「一曜性難明」, a star whose nature is hard to fathom; and Po Jun with Qing Yang and Ling Xing in the Career Palace, 「到處乞求」, begging everywhere.
The note on the Zi-Wu line lists year stems, and its 「丁巳」 and 「丙戌」 should be Ding-Ji and Bing-Wu: stems and branches have been mixed up.
1破軍 廟子午 旺辰戌丑未 陷卯酉
TranslationPo Jun's brightness: Miao in Zi and Wu; Wang in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei; Xian in Mao and You.
- 廟
- Miao (Temple): the position where a star works best.
- 旺
- Wang (Prosperous): one grade below Miao, still strong.
- 陷
- Xian (Fallen).
Po Jun's brightness table matches Xingge's; Xingge also grades Yin and Shen as De and Si and Hai as Ping. Po Jun's transformed qi is waste; it belongs to water and governs tearing down the old to build the new, and consumption. It is Miao in Zi and Wu, where it sits alone with Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang opposite, and Xian in Mao and You, where it shares the palace with Lian Zhen. Po Jun is always in a trine with Tan Lang and always in a trine with Qi Sha, so the three Sha Po Lang stars always appear together in the San Fang Si Zheng. For Po Jun's character as a whole, see The Nature of Po Jun and the Po Jun star page.
2破軍子午宮無殺官資清顯至三公 甲癸生人合格,丁巳生人次之,丙戌生人主困。
TranslationPo Jun in the Zi or Wu palace without malefic stars: an office pure and eminent, rising to the Three Dukes. (Note) People born in Jia or Gui years fit the pattern, Ding and Ji years next, and Bing and Wu years mean hardship.
Textual note: The note's 「丁巳生人」 and 「丙戌生人」 both list year stems and should be Ding-Ji (丁己) and Bing-Wu (丙戊).
This is Ying Xing Ru Miao (the heroic star in its temple). The stems can be taken one by one: in a Gui year Po Jun takes Hua Lu and Lu Cun is also in Zi; in a Jia year Po Jun takes Hua Quan and Lian Zhen's Hua Lu is in the opposite palace; in Ding and Ji years Lu Cun is in Wu and shines in from opposite, hence next best. In Bing and Wu years Qing Yang is in Wu, sharing the palace with Po Jun in Wu and clashing from opposite when Po Jun is in Zi, which explains 'hardship' and also bears out the textual note on the Ju Men page of this chapter that changes 「丙戊主男」 to 'means hardship'. 「官資清顯至三公」 is word for word the last line of the Tian Liang verse (The Nature of Tian Liang), and the Tian Liang page of this chapter has 「天梁居午位官資清顯朝堂」 (segment 3).
3破軍貪狼逢祿馬男多浪蕩女多淫
TranslationPo Jun and Tan Lang meeting Lu Cun and Tian Ma: men often dissolute, women often lewd.
Po Jun and Tan Lang are always in a trine with each other, so 'Po Jun and Tan Lang' is not a chance combination: Po Jun in the Life Palace always meets Tan Lang. Add Lu Cun and Tian Ma, moving stars meeting moving stars, and the result is dissoluteness and lust. The Wu Qu page of this chapter says Lu Cun and Tian Ma galloping together mean making money far away; here the same pair meeting Po Jun and Tan Lang turns into dissipation, which shows that Lu Cun and Tian Ma are neutral in themselves, good or bad according to the major stars they join.
4破軍暗巨同鄉水中作塚 破與巨不同垣,恐照命宮或犯遷移。
TranslationPo Jun with the dark Ju Men in the same place: making a grave in the water. (Note) Po Jun and Ju Men are not in the same palace; perhaps it means shining on the Life Palace, or falling in the Travel Palace.
- 暗巨
- The dark Ju Men: Ju Men, whose transformed qi is darkness.
- 水中作塚
- Making a grave in the water: drowning.
The original is the Tai Wei Fu's 「破軍暗曜同鄉,水中作塚」 (segment 31). The note already notices that Po Jun and Ju Men never share a palace and guesses at shining on the Life Palace or the Travel Palace. By the chart rules, Po Jun and Ju Men never meet even in the San Fang Si Zheng, so 'shining on the Life Palace' fails too. The line can only be read as an image of Po Jun and Ju Men each in certain positions: Po Jun belongs to water, Ju Men to water, darkness and waste both lean toward water, and so the mind goes to water. It should not be used to predict drowning for any chart today.
5破軍火鈴奔波勞碌
TranslationPo Jun with Huo Xing and Ling Xing: rushing about and toiling.
Po Jun belongs to water and Huo Xing and Ling Xing to fire; water and fire stir each other, and Po Jun's destructive force driven by fiery impatience means running everywhere and never settling. The verdict is far lighter than Qi Sha meeting Qing Yang and Ling Xing: only toil, no punishment or injury. On a chart, check whether Huo Xing or Ling Xing shares Po Jun's palace.
6破軍一曜性難明 男女命論。
TranslationPo Jun, this one star, is hard to fathom in nature. (Note) Judge so for both men's and women's charts.
The original is the Women's Gu Sui Fu's 「破軍一曜性難明」 (segment 10), and the note says men and women are judged alike. Po Jun's unfathomable nature is the essence of its 'waste': it breaks first and builds after, and others often cannot read its next move. The ancients were divided on Po Jun in the Life Palace: in its temple with lucky stars it is the heroic star; fallen with malefic stars it is ruin. Today it can be read as fast-changing and unconventional, suited to work that needs a breakthrough.
7破耗羊鈴官祿位到處乞求 又貪狼在子午卯酉者,看貪狼內注。
TranslationPo Jun, the wasting star, with Qing Yang and Ling Xing in the Career Palace: begging everywhere. (Note) Also, for Tan Lang in Zi, Wu, Mao or You, see the note under Tan Lang.
- 破耗
- Po Jun, whose transformed qi is waste.
The original is the Tai Wei Fu's 「耗居祿位,沿途乞食」 (segment 37), where 祿位 is the Career Palace. Po Jun meeting Qing Yang and Ling Xing in the Career Palace means a career wasted and punished, hence begging everywhere. The second half of the note, 'for Tan Lang in Zi, Wu, Mao or You, see the note under Tan Lang', points to the next clause in the same place in the Tai Wei Fu, 「貪會旺宮,終身鼠竊」; the two run together in the original text. In today's terms, a period of unstable work, frequent job changes and relying on others' help.
