Kan (The Abyss)

Danger on top of danger, one pit after another. While you are stuck inside, hold on to your sincerity and a steady mind, and work your way out step by step.

Cast your own hexagram

Difficulty comes in layer after layer. The danger won't vanish on its own. The Judgment's way through is to keep faith and keep your mind steady, and to keep going, which brings results. Like water that keeps moving without losing its nature, you can flow out of the pit.

Favorable

  • Keep your word
  • Aim for small progress first
  • Talk simply and sincerely
  • Drill the basics again and again

Avoid

  • Risking more to win back losses
  • Thrashing around in a panic
  • Lying or passing the blame
  • Big decisions while in danger

Work and money

Job search
Hitting wall after wall in a job search is what the doubled pit looks like. The second line says seeking small things succeeds: a smaller role or a short contract that gets you in the door is more realistic than landing the ideal job in one go.
Business
Layered danger makes this an unfavorable time to open a new location, expand or borrow to cover cash flow. Protect your cash and keep your word with suppliers and customers. Water flows without overflowing: as long as your credit holds, the business can keep moving.
Money
There is financial risk, so stay conservative. Don't take bigger risks to win back losses; first make sure you stop sliding.

Love and people

Single
Right now it is easy to meet people who wear you out, or fall into something murky you can't read. Hold back from going all in. Watch whether what they say matches what they do; only someone sincere is worth going further with.
In a relationship
The two of you are caught in a chain of problems, around money, family or trust. The fourth line passes the pledge in through the window: don't force the hard talk mid-argument. Pick a moment they can hear it and say it privately and simply.
Getting back together
The chances are slim, and there are still unhandled pits between you. Pushing now looks like the third line, pit upon pit whichever way you go. Steady yourself first, and talk again if they open the door.
People and partnerships
Crises keep coming between partners, and it is easy to start blaming each other. Keep your word and set expectations up front. If someone keeps breaking theirs, step back gradually rather than sinking with them.

Daily life

Exams and study
Exams may stall, and you might have to retake one. The Image has water arriving again and again and practice repeated: the lesson of Kan (The Abyss) is drilling. Redo the problems you got wrong, round after round, filling the gaps wave by wave.
Moving and travel
Travel is unfavorable now. Be especially careful near water, in the rain and on night roads, and expect delays. Put off moves that can wait. If you must go, keep two copies of your route, documents and contacts.
Body and mind
Pressure stacks layer on layer, which can bring poor sleep, overthinking and a racing heart. The Judgment says the heart goes through, so look after your mind first, sleep well, keep a regular routine and talk to someone. If symptoms linger, don't tough it out; see a doctor.

Traditional questions

Something you are waiting for
There are still hurdles in the way, so it comes slowly. The fifth line has the water just reaching level: it arrives once the obstacles are cleared one by one and the pit is filled to the rim. Rushing won't help.
Disputes and lawsuits
Lawsuits and disputes tend to drag on, one layer pulling in another. The top line is bound with cords for three years: don't let yourself sink further. Get a lawyer early, keep your evidence, and settle if you can.
Lost things and people
Hard to recover. Kan (Water) carries a sense of hidden things and theft, so it may have been taken or be stuck somewhere out of sight. If you do search, look near water: the bathroom, drains, and low, dark spots.

Making a decision

Hold off on big moves. Handle what is most urgent, protect your credibility, and talk about next steps once you are out of danger.

If you are…

A delivery driver whose credit card balance keeps growing

One pit after another, and the most dangerous move is paying old debt with new debt. Stop using the cards, list everything you owe and ask the lenders about a payment plan. Every month the total drops a little is a month of climbing out.

Someone retaking the bar exam after two failed attempts

The danger hasn't passed, but Kan (The Abyss) says going forward brings honor. Look at which sections cost you the last two times and change how you study before trying again. Don't study while doubting yourself; a steady mind is what gets you to the rim.

This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.

With sincerity, the heart goes through: success. Going forward brings honor.

Water over Water: Kan (Water) above and Kan (Water) below. Kan is water and danger. A single yang line is sunk between two yin lines, like falling into a pit, and with two layers stacked the danger is doubled. The classic calls it the repeated Kan (The Abyss), repeated meaning layered.

Six at the beginning

In the doubled pit, falling into a hollow at the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.

You are already in trouble, and panic or a wrong turn sinks you deeper. Stop moving first. Work out how you got in, then look for the way out.

Small Image:

Nine in the second place

The pit holds danger. Seeking small things, you can get them.

The trouble isn't over, and getting free in one move isn't realistic. Aim for small progress, like stopping the losses or handling the most urgent thing first, and inch your way out.

Small Image:

Six in the third place

Coming and going, pit upon pit. Danger ahead, and nothing secure to rest on behind. Falling into a hollow at the bottom of the pit. Do not act.

You are stuck either way, and any move may make it worse. Don't make big decisions now: no doubling down, no impulsive resignation, no showdown. Hold your current position.

Small Image:

Six in the fourth place

A jug of wine, a bowl of grain, with an earthen pot besides. Passing the pledge in through the window. In the end, no blame.

When dealing with people in hard times, simple sincerity matters more than show. Come in through the door they are open to, like speaking privately or starting from what they care about, and things can pass in the end.

Small Image:

Nine in the fifth place

The pit is not yet full; the water has just reached level. No blame.

You are nearly out, but not quite. Keep your current pace. Don't rush to celebrate or expand; hold on a little longer and it levels off.

Small Image:

Six at the top

Bound with black cords, placed among thorn bushes. For three years one cannot get free. Misfortune.

A string of wrong turns has tied you into the trouble, perhaps a lawsuit, a debt or a tangled relationship, and it won't come undone quickly. Admit the mistake, get professional help, and accept that cleaning it up will take a long time.

Small Image:

Tuan commentary

Kan (The Abyss) repeated is double danger. Water flows on and never overflows; it moves through danger without losing its faithfulness. The heart goes through because the strong line holds the center. Going forward brings honor: going on brings achievement. The danger of heaven is that it cannot be climbed; the dangers of earth are mountains, rivers and hills. Kings and lords set up defenses to guard their states. Great indeed is the timely use of danger.

The Image

Water flows on and arrives again and again: Kan (The Abyss) repeated. The noble person, seeing this, keeps virtue constant and practices the work of teaching over and over.

The Sequence: why it comes here

The hexagram before is Da Guo (Great Exceeding). Things cannot keep going too far forever; whatever goes too far falls into danger. So Da Guo is followed by Kan (The Abyss), and Kan means falling in.

Miscellaneous Notes

Li (Clinging Fire) rises, and Kan (The Abyss) sinks. Han Kangbo explains that fire flares upward and water soaks downward: Kan is water, running to low ground and sinking there, the exact opposite of Li's fire burning upward.
