Xu (Waiting)
Xu (Waiting) is about waiting, like clouds gathered in the sky before the rain. It's about how to wait patiently when danger lies ahead, and where you choose to wait.
Cast your own hexagramXu (Waiting): there's an obstacle ahead, and this isn't the time to force your way through. Stay confident, keep to what's right, and wait for the moment. When it's time to go, you can get across.
Favorable
- Wait for the right moment
- Prepare thoroughly
- Eat well and rest
- Set out when the time comes
Avoid
- Forcing your way through
- Edging closer out of impatience
- Anxiously asking again and again
- Giving up halfway
Work and money
- Job search
- The opportunity is ahead, just not yet. Polish your portfolio and credentials and keep applying. Don't grab the first offer that doesn't fit. When the timing lines up, go for it all at once.
- Business
- Conditions aren't ripe. Hold off on launching or opening a new location. Line up funding, product, and partners, and move when the market signals are clear. The Judgment's crossing of the great river comes after the wait.
- Money
- Not a time to chase a rally or rush in. Keep cash on hand and wait for conditions to clear. Patience matters more than action.
Love and people
- Single
- Someone is likely to come along, but it can't be rushed. Like the fifth line's waiting with wine and food, go to dinners and get-togethers and enjoy your life. That tends to work better than hunting for a match.
- In a relationship
- Some things your partner isn't ready for yet, like moving in, a big purchase, or meeting family. Give it time. Eat together, live your days, and the answer tends to surface on its own.
- Getting back together
- Chasing them now is the third line's waiting in the mud: the harder you push, the deeper you sink. Step back and look after yourself. If they care, they may come back. If not, don't wear yourself out waiting.
- People and partnerships
- Terms are still being worked out, so no rush to sign. Share a meal or two and get to know each other. The top line's three uninvited guests suggest welcoming people who turn up unexpectedly; they may help.
Daily life
- Exams and study
- Suits exams with long prep and a long wait for results. The Image speaks of eating and feasting: look after food and sleep before the exam, and afterward don't refresh the results page all day.
- Moving and travel
- Expect delays or rescheduling before you leave. You can go, but wait until the weather, paperwork, and plans are settled. Leave slack in the itinerary, and enjoy a good meal while you wait.
- Body and mind
- Waiting is draining, and you may keep checking for news. The Image says eat, drink, and be at ease: have proper meals, sleep enough, see friends, and let yourself unwind. If you feel unwell, get it looked at by a doctor.
Traditional questions
- Something you are waiting for
- Likely to come, but slowly. Kan (Water) ahead is like clouds that haven't rained yet. It tends to arrive once conditions come together and the obstacle passes. Stay confident and you can wait it out.
- Disputes and lawsuits
- Don't strike yet. Wait for the evidence and timing to come to your side. The third line warns that waiting in the mud brings raiders: pushing too hard and too close invites the other side to attack.
- Lost things and people
- There's a fair chance of finding it, though not right away. Look near water or damp spots, for Kan (Water), up high or inside round containers, for Qian (Heaven), and around the dining table or kitchen.
Making a decision
Your direction is fine; the timing isn't there yet. Wait and prepare. Once a clear signal comes, act boldly.
If you are…
Xu (Waiting) says the opportunity is ahead; the rain just hasn't fallen. Keep applying and strengthen your portfolio, and keep living your life meanwhile. Don't panic into a job you have no interest in.
Staring at your phone only feeds the anxiety. Xu (Waiting) asks for quiet confidence: take care of your own life and give them time. If it drags on far too long, find a good moment to ask once, properly.
This is the reading when no line is changing. With changing lines, Zhu Xi’s method says which line to read, and the result page after a casting tells you directly.
With sincerity, there is shining success. Steadfastness brings good fortune. It pays to cross the great river.
Water over Heaven. Qian below is heaven and strength; Kan above is water and danger. The clouds have risen into the sky but the rain hasn't fallen. With danger ahead, even the strong have to wait first, and so the hexagram is Xu (Waiting).
Nine at the beginning
Waiting in the open country outside the city. It pays to stay constant. No blame.
The danger is still far off. Keep your usual pace, and don't let worry push you into moving early. Holding steady is what keeps you clear.
Small Image:
Nine in the second place
Waiting on the sand. There is some small talk against you; in the end, good fortune.
You're closer to the problem now, and people have started talking. Let it roll off you and don't rush to argue back. Keep waiting; the line ends in good fortune.
Small Image:
Nine in the third place
Waiting in the mud brings raiders.
You're on the edge of the risk, and one move could sink you. Most of the trouble comes from stepping too close yourself. Staying careful and unhurried is what keeps you from sinking.
Small Image:
Six in the fourth place
Waiting in blood. Coming out of the pit.
You've already been pulled into a conflict or crisis. Don't fight it head-on. Go with the situation, take advice, and find a way out first.
Small Image:
Nine in the fifth place
Waiting with wine and food. Steadfastness brings good fortune.
You've done what needed doing; now you wait. Eat well, sleep well, carry on as usual, and keep to what's right. The moment tends to come.
Small Image:
Six at the top
Going into the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Treat them with respect, and in the end, good fortune.
At the end of the wait, someone or something unexpected shows up. Don't push it away. Treat it with courtesy and take it seriously; it may be the turning point.
Small Image:
Xu (Waiting) means biding one's time, because danger lies ahead. Firm and strong, yet it does not fall in, so by rights it will not be trapped or exhausted. "With sincerity, there is shining success; steadfastness brings good fortune": the fifth line holds the place of heaven, correct and central. "It pays to cross the great river": going forward will bring results.
The Image
Clouds rise up to the sky: this is Xu (Waiting). The noble person, seeing this, eats and drinks, feasts and is at ease.
The Sequence: why it comes here物穉不可不養也,故受之以需;需者飲食之道也。
Young things cannot go without nourishment, so Xu (Waiting) follows Meng (Youthful Folly). Xu is the way of food and drink: to grow, you need to be well fed, and nourishing anything takes patient waiting.
Miscellaneous Notes
Xu (Waiting) does not advance; Song (Conflict) does not draw close. The two are the same trigrams flipped. In Xu, the strong meet danger and wait, and can still sit down to a meal. In Song, strength runs into danger and it has already turned into a standoff.
