Birth (長生) in the 12 stages of Ba Zi

Birth is the sprout just breaking the soil: still small, but already pointed upward and growing.

What Birth means

The twelve stages describe the Day Master's strength as a life cycle, and Birth is the first stop: a newborn, full of life, looked after, curious about everything. Strength is not at its peak yet, but it is rising, with a long way still to grow.

Where it falls for each Day Master

Jia Wood in Hai, Yi Wood in Wu, Bing Fire in Yin, Ding Fire in You, Wu Earth in Yin, Ji Earth in You, Geng Metal in Si, Xin Metal in Zi, Ren Water in Shen, Gui Water in Mao. Yang stems run the cycle forward and yin stems run it backward, which is why Jia and Yi start in different branches.

Birth on your Day branch

With the Day Master sitting on Birth, people often describe you as gentle and approachable, quick to learn and easy for elders and mentors to take under their wing. You carry a natural optimism and are happy to start from scratch. The thing to watch is getting used to being looked after, so you are a beat slow when something is yours alone to carry; building up small experiences of handling things on your own is enough.

On the Year, Month and Hour pillars

On the Year pillar, it is often read as a caring start in your family and early years. On the Month pillar, your work surroundings tend to include people willing to teach you, so learning on the job suits you. On the Hour pillar, it is traditionally read as fresh interests in later years and a gentle bond with children.

A tip

The strength of Birth is that it is still growing. Keeping one new thing you learn every year suits you better than rushing to prove yourself.

FAQ

How are the twelve stages read in a Bazi chart?

The twelve stages describe how strong the Day Master is in a given branch. Xingge works out the Day Master's stage on every branch of your four pillars: the Day branch shows your own footing, the Year pillar your family background and early years, the Month pillar work and surroundings, and the Hour pillar later years and children. These are tendencies, read together with the whole chart.

Does Birth count as a root for yin stems?

This is an old debate in Bazi. For yang stems, the Birth branch holds the same element: Jia is born in Hai, and Hai contains Jia Wood, so it works as a root. For yin stems (Yi in Wu, Ding and Ji in You, Xin in Zi, Gui in Mao), the branch holds none of the Day Master's element, so many schools do not count it as a root. Xingge follows that view when weighing strength and treats yin-stem Birth as a description of the stage only.

Which Day pillars sit on Birth?

Six of the sixty pillars do: Bing Yin, Wu Yin, Ren Shen, Ding You, Ji You and Gui Mao. Ding You, Ji You and Gui Mao are yin-stem Birth, so by the view above they give a lighter root than Bing Yin, Wu Yin and Ren Shen.
