What Tomb means
First, to be clear: Tomb is the traditional name for a phase of energy, meaning storing and gathering in, not a literal grave. It is like someone who has sorted a lifetime's belongings into a storehouse: the strength does not show, but it is all kept. Tomb always falls on the four earth branches Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, which is why it is also called the Storehouse.
Where it falls for each Day Master
Jia Wood in Wei, Yi Wood in Xu, Bing Fire in Xu, Ding Fire in Chou, Wu Earth in Xu, Ji Earth in Chou, Geng Metal in Chou, Xin Metal in Chen, Ren Water in Chen, Gui Water in Wei.
Tomb on your Day branch
With the Day Master sitting on Tomb, also called sitting on the Storehouse, people often describe you as reserved, good at saving and loyal to the past, someone who plans for the long run and keeps their cards close. You are a natural accumulator of money, knowledge and connections alike, built up slowly. The thing to watch is holding on too tightly, keeping thoughts bottled up and finding it hard to let things go; open the storehouse and sort through it now and then, because what you can actually use is what is truly yours.
On the Year, Month and Hour pillars
On the Year pillar, it is often read as a family with something built up over time and a sense of heritage, or family matters that shaped you deeply. On the Month pillar, work tends to suit fields about building up and preserving, such as finance, data, archives and collections, or long-running businesses. On the Hour pillar, it is traditionally read as savings and collections in later years, and a wish to pass things on to the next generation.
A tip
A storehouse is only useful when it is opened. Set yourself a time to take out what you have saved and use or share it.
FAQ
Is the Tomb stage unlucky?
No. Tomb is the traditional name of a phase that means storing and gathering in, which is why it is also called the Storehouse. It stands for accumulating and preserving, and many people who save well, value the past and care about heritage have their Day Master on Tomb.
Which Day pillars sit on Tomb?
Six of the sixty pillars do: Bing Xu, Wu Xu, Ren Chen, Ding Chou, Ji Chou and Gui Wei, traditionally described as the Day Master sitting on its Storehouse. The branch holds some of the Day Master's own element, so the strength is stored away, not missing.
What is the difference between Tomb and Storehouse?
They are the same position seen from different angles: it is usually called Tomb when speaking of the Day Master itself, and Storehouse when wealth, status or other things are stored there, as in "wealth storehouse". When Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei meets a clash, tradition calls it "opening the storehouse", making what is stored easier to draw on.
