No theory, only listening
Debussy studied at the Paris Conservatoire for eleven years, and in composition he did not follow the orthodox rules of the day, to the disapproval of his teacher Ernest Guiraud. In 1889 he told Guiraud, "There is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is the law!" In his chart, the opposite palace, the Travel Palace, holds Po Jun (Miao). Po Jun is the star that breaks the old and sets up the new, shining from the Travel Palace into his Life Palace, which fits his ignoring academic rules and letting his ear decide how to write.
