What the Water 2 · Lian Zhen type is like

Carry a lantern through a rainy night, and the wetter it gets outside, the more carefully you shield the flame. A Water 2 Lian Zhen keeps their heat inside a frame, and rules are the lantern's shade.

Lian Zhen meets the Water 2 Bureau

Water puts out Fire, so here the bureau works on the star: the Water of Water 2 keeps pressing down on Lian Zhen's Fire, and this Lian Zhen learns early to control the flame and keep feelings and ambition out of sight. The Life Palace falls in Wu or Wei unusually often, more than 25% of the type between them. Among companion stars, Tian Xiang and Qi Sha are the most common, each about 20%, followed by Tan Lang, with Lian Zhen alone and the pairings with Tian Fu and Po Jun a little less frequent. Profit (Li) and Average (Ping) each account for about 34%, while Temple (Miao) in Yin or Shen is about 15% and Fallen (Xian) in Si or Hai about 17%.

Work and money

For Lian Zhen with Qi Sha, a rhyme in the Complete Book says “Lian Zhen and Qi Sha make, on the contrary, a person who piles up wealth.” The phrase “on the contrary” is telling: the old writers expected two hard stars together to cause trouble, and found instead someone who saves. In Water 2 that accumulation mostly comes from restraint. With Water pressing on Fire, they do not splurge or charge ahead, they can cut back where it counts, and they build the base little by little. They suit work that calls for discipline and patience: audit, compliance, engineering management, long-term projects. With money they like growth they can watch: automatic transfers, regular purchases, numbers slowly rising, which reassures them.

Love and getting along

In love they are loyal, but they do not lift the shade easily. With Water on Fire, they watch first and let someone close only once it feels safe; after that they remember a great many details and hope the other person takes it just as seriously. A partner may find them cool, when really they are still checking. Give it time, and the shade lifts on its own.

When things get stuck

A shade pulled too tight smothers the flame: so attentive to rules and to how they look to others that they cannot say what they want. The usual snag for this type is a pile of grievances left unspoken until, one day, they all come out at once. Find a regular outlet, exercise, writing, a trusted person to talk to, so the fire has air.

The rhythm of the 10-year periods

With the first period on the Life Palace, the first thing Lian Zhen has to deal with in life is themselves: their standards, their temper, their relationship with rules. Water 2 brings this on especially early. By age 2 (counted the traditional way) the periods have begun, with the Life Palace in charge until 11, and changes at 12, 22 and 32. Learning early to manage their own fire is useful in every palace they reach later.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology

In this type Lian Zhen leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.

The bureau is the Water 2 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 2 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ

With Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang together, will the chart show Xing Qiu Jia Yin?

Only if Qing Yang is there. On the Xingge chart, Lian Zhen, Tian Xiang and Qing Yang together in one palace are marked Xing Qiu Jia Yin (Seal Between Punishment and Prison); Lian Zhen and Tian Xiang without Qing Yang are not. In the Complete Book the punishment star was Tian Xing, limited to the Body or Life Palace: “Tian Xing and Lian Zhen together in the Body or Life Palace mean a martial, brave person.” The Xingge chart uses Qing Yang instead, in any palace. About 20% of Water 2 Lian Zhen have Tian Xiang alongside; the modern reading is someone with real force in managing things, who does better setting out the rules first than arguing about right and wrong afterwards.

Lian Zhen transforms into “the prisoner.” Does that mean a repressed life?

It is less being locked up than keeping oneself in check. The prisoner is fire kept in the furnace: still burning, just with a boundary. A Water 2 Lian Zhen is especially good at holding back, which can look repressed from outside, but mostly they are choosing to let it out only when it is safe. The one reminder is that anything held in too long needs air.

How common is the Water 2 · Lian Zhen type?

Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 4,381 have Lian Zhen leading the Life Palace and the Water 2 Bureau: about 1.7%, roughly 1 in 60 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.

Why can two people born on the same day be different types?

Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.

What is the Five Elements Bureau?

The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.

How is this different from MBTI?

MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.

Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?

When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.

A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
