What the Water 2 · Tai Yin type is like
The moon reflected on the water: you can see it, but you cannot scoop it up. A Water 2 Tai Yin's mind works in layers, and outsiders see only the reflection while the real moon sits somewhere far deeper.
Tai Yin meets the Water 2 Bureau
Tai Yin is Water and so is the Water 2 Bureau; Water on Water makes this the Tai Yin who feels most deeply and shows it least. This type is entirely Tai Yin alone, since charts where sun and moon share a palace belong to the Tai Yang type. Mao is the most common branch, over 25%; Mao, Chen and Si, the three daytime positions, together come to 60%, all at Fallen (Xian). Prosperous (Wang) in You or Xu makes up about 27%, and Temple (Miao) in Hai just over 10%.
Work and money
Tai Yin in the daytime palaces is like the moon still hanging in the sky after sunrise: faint, but always there. The Complete Book's Xingxing Fu says “the golden crow gives a round, full face; the jade hare gives a clear, striking look,” the jade hare being the moon. With Water on Water, that clarity grows into a fine aesthetic sense and sensitivity: a shade slightly off, a tone of voice slightly changed, they notice. Work that calls for fine perception suits them: design, writing, counselling, curating, perfumery, care work. With money they prefer quiet accumulation kept somewhere they understand, and when they buy, they look at quality rather than quantity.
Love and getting along
In love they are gentle and sensitive, and like to show it through small things: a handwritten card, a song that matches the mood exactly. With Water on Water their feelings run deep, and when hurt they do not argue; they retreat to the bottom of the lake. A partner who notices them going quiet need not press for reasons. Sit with them for a while, and the reflection rises on its own.
When things get stuck
When the water is too deep, the light cannot reach the bottom: too much thinking and too much feeling, so one small thing can circle in their mind for days. The usual snag is leaving things unsaid and making others guess. Write the feelings down, or say them to someone trusted; once the surface moves, the reflection becomes clear.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
Water 2 starts earliest, and a Tai Yin here begins the periods at age 2 (counted the traditional way), with 2 to 11 in the Life Palace. For an inward-facing star, that means learning to live with their own feelings very early. After 12 the periods move outward in turn, changing at 22 and 32. With each palace the moon shines on a different stretch of water, and they find their sensitivity can be put to use with different people and things.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type Tai Yin leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.
The bureau is the Water 2 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 2 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
What does the Ri Yue Fan Bei mark mean for Tai Yin in Mao or Chen?
With Tai Yin in the Life Palace in Mao or Chen, Tai Yang always falls in Hai or Xu, right in the San Fang Si Zheng of the Life Palace, and both are dim, so the Xingge chart marks Ri Yue Fan Bei (Sun and Moon Turned Away). The Taiwei Fu says “the sun and moon most dread being turned away”; the old worry was a lack of light. Close to half of Water 2 Tai Yin are in this position. The chart's reading says effort may not pay off right away and what carries them is skill they have worked to build, often with more energy at night than by day. It is a different rhythm, not a flaw: the daytime moon is faint, but it never leaves the sky. A note in volume three adds: “Back to back means the sun in Xu and the moon in Chen, or (the sun in) Zi and the moon in Wu. If the person leaves home and the clan and sets up a household, it is lucky too; do not judge it as back to back across the board.” Tai Yin in Chen with Tai Yang in Xu is exactly one of those cases, and the old writers themselves warned against reading it as a single verdict.
Does a Water 2 Tai Yin get along with a Tian Tong person?
Both are Water stars, close in pace and temperature, and comfortable together. Tian Tong is easygoing and helps people relax; Tai Yin is attentive and looks after the atmosphere. The catch is that neither likes conflict, so problems tend to get shelved by both. Set a regular time to take the shelved things down and talk them over.
How common is the Water 2 · Tai Yin type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,225 have Tai Yin leading the Life Palace and the Water 2 Bureau: about 0.8%, roughly 1 in 118 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
