What the Water 2 · Tai Yang type is like

There are no streetlights at sea, which is why there are lighthouses. A Water 2 Tai Yang is surrounded by water, with nights longer than days, and still sends the light out to guide the boats home.

Tai Yang meets the Water 2 Bureau

Water puts out Fire, so here the bureau works on the star: the Water of Water 2 keeps drawing down the sun's Fire, and this Tai Yang has to find its own ways to stay warm. About 58% have Tai Yang alone; Tai Yang with Tai Yin is about 15%, and Tai Yang with Ju Men and with Tian Liang about 14% each. The Zi and Hai branches are the most common, about 27% together, so this is mostly a night-time sun (night here refers to the Life Palace branch, not the hour of birth): Fallen (Xian) is about 27%, as common as Prosperous (Wang); Unsupported (Bu) is about 19%, Gain (De) about 14%, and Temple (Miao) and Average (Ping) about 7% each.

Work and money

A night-time sun is not a sun without light; the light is simply used differently. This type comes into its own in places nobody sees: technical support behind the scenes, the engineer who keeps everyone's systems running, the editor who checks every last word, the family member who is first to pick up the phone when something goes wrong. Their satisfaction tends to come from “things went smoothly because of me,” with applause a distant second. Water putting out Fire also means their warmth gets drawn away by the surroundings, so they need regular refuelling: a full night's sleep, a weekend with nobody to look after. With money, steady and automatic suits them, such as a fixed monthly investment. A lighthouse does not rely on one big flash; it relies on coming on at the same time every night.

Love and getting along

In love they are the one who quietly waits up: you work late, they leave the light on; you are low, they sit with you in silence until you are ready to talk. They rarely ask for anything back and tend to keep their own hurts to themselves. A lighthouse needs someone to climb up and check on it too; a partner who now and then asks whether they are tired today will be remembered for it.

When things get stuck

What a lighthouse fears is fog: so many needs around them that the light cannot get through, and they start to wonder whether they are any use at all. There is no need to turn the light up. Narrow the beam instead, and look after the two or three people who truly matter. The other snag is running low. Water puts out Fire and warmth drains fast, so rest has to go into the schedule rather than wait until they are exhausted.

The rhythm of the 10-year periods

The Complete Book says “the star Tai Yang travels the degrees of the whole heavens, turning without end.” The 10-year periods also travel the chart, one palace at a time. A Water 2 Tai Yang starts at age 2 (counted the traditional way), with the first period on the Life Palace from 2 to 11; only at 12 does it begin to move, turning again at 22 and 32. Whether it goes forward or backward depends on the yin-yang of the birth year and the person's sex. With each turn the sun lights a different stretch of sky, and the way they shine changes with it.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology

In this type Tai Yang leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.

The bureau is the Water 2 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 2 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ

Does a Fallen (Xian) Tai Yang mean less good fortune?

No. Close to half of Water 2 Tai Yang are Fallen or Unsupported (Bu), mostly in Zi, Hai or Xu. The old books' concern with how bright the sun is works through the image of day and night: a bright sun works out front, a night-time sun works backstage, with the same warmth and a different way of shining. On the Xingge chart, if Tai Yin is also dim and both light the Life Palace, the chart marks Ri Yue Fan Bei (Sun and Moon Turned Away), and its reading says effort may not pay off right away, and what carries them is skill they have worked hard to build.

Does a Water 2 Tai Yang get along with a Tai Yin person?

Sun and moon, one outgoing and one inward. A Water 2 Tai Yang mostly sits in Zi or Hai, the very palaces where Tai Yin is at Temple (Miao), so the two often see things from surprisingly close angles. The difference is expression: Tai Yang says it aloud, Tai Yin keeps it inside. When they disagree, give Tai Yin a night to sort things out and talk the next day.

How common is the Water 2 · Tai Yang type?

Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 4,382 have Tai Yang leading the Life Palace and the Water 2 Bureau: about 1.7%, roughly 1 in 60 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.

Why can two people born on the same day be different types?

Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.

What is the Five Elements Bureau?

The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.

How is this different from MBTI?

MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.

Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?

When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.

A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
