What the Water 2 · Tian Liang type is like

The typhoon has not arrived yet, and a Water 2 Tian Liang has already stacked the sandbags. They are like a levee: nobody notices it on ordinary days, but when the water rises, everyone discovers they have been standing behind it all along.

Tian Liang meets the Water 2 Bureau

Nearly 24% of this type have Tian Liang in the Wu palace, the highest share of any bureau, and Tian Liang alone in Wu is what a Xingge chart marks as Shou Xing Ru Miao (Longevity Star in Its Temple). The third volume says “Tian Liang in the Wu position: clear and eminent office, standing at court,” and the ancients saw this as Tian Liang's most distinguished position. In element terms Tian Liang is Earth and the Water 2 Bureau is Water; Earth holds back Water, so here the star keeps the bureau in check. The bureau's water keeps flowing and rising, and Tian Liang's earth holds it in and channels it where it should go. On the chart Tian Liang sits in Wu or Wei about 24% of the time each, Si about 15%, and Chou, Zi and Hai about 12% each. Temple (Miao) and Prosperous (Wang) each take about 36%, in Zi and Wu and in Chou and Wei respectively; Fallen (Xian) is about 27%, in Si and Hai.

Work and money

Their value usually shows before the water spills over. Water 2's water never stops moving, and Tian Liang's earth handles the channelling: the staffing of a department, a budget, a family's resources. They look first at which part is about to overflow and which is about to run dry, then divert the flow. Others often notice only afterwards that the place that should have flooded did not, and the place that should have dried up held on. They handle money the same way: not by damming it up but by digging channels first, a fixed share for long-term goals, a share for family, a share for their own interests, so the money flows where it should.

Love and getting along

In love, the security they offer comes from everything being in hand: a backup plan for the trip, care when you are ill, every detail of a house move. The people they look after feel safe. Sometimes, though, a partner does not want to be kept behind the levee; they want to get caught in the rain together. Setting the preparations aside now and then and facing a small surprise side by side can bring two people closer.

When things get stuck

Build the levee too high and you lose the view of the river. When they block every risk they can think of, the people around them lose the chance to try things and take a tumble on their own, and they themselves stay on guard and rarely relax. It helps to tell which water can be allowed through: let others carry their own small mistakes, and step in only for the big waves. Keeping some time when there is nothing to guard against is part of maintaining the levee too.

The rhythm of the 10-year periods

The life periods begin at age 2 (counted the traditional way), which means something particular for a star of shelter: the first period runs through the Life Palace where Tian Liang sits, so in a decade when they are still being looked after by adults, Tian Liang's shelter is already part of them. The first change comes at 12, then 22 and 32. For this type each change is like taking charge of a new stretch of river: the levees built on the last stretch need not all be guarded in person. Hand them to the people downstream and go and look at the new water.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology

In this type Tian Liang leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.

The bureau is the Water 2 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 2 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ

What is Shou Xing Ru Miao (Longevity Star in Its Temple), and does every Water 2 Tian Liang have it?

It means Tian Liang alone in the Life Palace in Wu. Tian Liang is the longevity star of the old texts and Wu is one of its Temple positions; a Xingge chart marks the pattern whenever that holds. About 24% of this type sit in Wu, the highest share of the five bureaus. Tian Liang in Zi is also at Temple, but does not count. The third volume says “Tian Liang in the Wu position: clear and eminent office,” a position the ancients regarded as distinguished, though the note to that line adds that it fits people born in Ding, Ji and Gui years, so the old text is stricter and worth checking yourself.

What work suits a Water 2 Tian Liang?

Work that means thinking through the “what if” in advance: risk assessment, construction or workplace safety, disaster preparedness, designing systems and procedures, budget control. What these share is that success shows not when something goes wrong, but when nothing does. A team that values prevention and is willing to hear their “what if” is where their worth gets counted.

How common is the Water 2 · Tian Liang type?

Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,457 have Tian Liang leading the Life Palace and the Water 2 Bureau: about 0.9%, roughly 1 in 107 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.

Why can two people born on the same day be different types?

Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.

What is the Five Elements Bureau?

The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.

How is this different from MBTI?

MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.

Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?

When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.

A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
