What the Metal 4 · Tian Liang type is like

Spend enough time around a Metal 4 Tian Liang and many people, with a nudge from them, dig out abilities they never knew they had. They are like a mountain that holds ore: not shining itself, but producing the gold that others wear.

Tian Liang meets the Metal 4 Bureau

The Xing Yuan Lun in the first volume has the phrase “Tian Liang (earth) reaching Wei,” which is about the earth of the Wei palace. The same passage goes on to earth nourishing metal, but the metal there is the element of stars such as Tuo Luo, Qing Yang and Tian Tong, not a bureau. Borrowed as an image, earth nourishing metal still suits the Metal 4 Tian Liang well. Tian Liang is Earth and the Metal 4 Bureau is Metal; Earth produces Metal, so here the star feeds the bureau, putting its strength into growing value in others. Si is the most common palace, at close to 28%, while Hai and Zi are rare. Prosperous (Wang) and Fallen (Xian) each take about 36%, Temple (Miao) about 29%. The 36% in Chou or Wei have Tian Ji in the opposite palace, and Tian Ji's quickness paired with Tian Liang's steadiness, one moving and one still, makes them especially good judges of people.

Work and money

Their satisfaction often comes from turning someone else's talent into results. They can see who suits what, and know how long an ability needs polishing and which stage will make it shine. Talent management, producing, early-stage investing, recruiting and book editing are all work they throw themselves into. Their money tends to follow that eye too: profit shares, equity, commission from long partnerships. They care less about any single payment than about how far the people they back can go.

Love and getting along

In love they are their partner's number one supporter, able to see the other person's potential and willing to spend time helping bring it out. Being appreciated by them feels like being truly seen. The thing to keep in mind is that a partner is not a project and does not need polishing into a particular shape. Sometimes the other person just wants them there, with nothing to change.

When things get stuck

Mine too deep and the mountain is hollowed out. They pour their strength into nourishing others, and when everyone is shining, they are too tired to talk. A patch left unmined helps: an interest that is theirs alone, time when they do not have to guide anyone. A second drain comes when someone they believed in heads off in a direction they did not expect. Spotting the seam is their gift; whether to mine it is, in the end, the other person's call.

The rhythm of the 10-year periods

Every ten years the seam passes into a new layer of rock. A Metal 4 Tian Liang starts digging from the Life Palace at age 4 (counted the traditional way) and changes at 14, 24 and 34, and the method that worked in one period may need different tools in the next. Around a change is also often when people they have championed move on to bigger stages. There is no need to feel bereft. The gold those people carry came out of this mountain in the first place, and the space they leave can go to the next group, or a little of it to themselves.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology

In this type Tian Liang leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.

The bureau is the Metal 4 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 4 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ

The old book says “Tian Ji and Tian Liang meeting Qing Yang: harm early, loneliness late.” Should a Metal 4 Tian Liang worry?

The line comes from the Zeng Bu Tai Wei Fu in the first volume, and its condition is Tian Ji and Tian Liang meeting Qing Yang. With Tian Liang alone in the Life Palace, Chou or Wei puts Tian Ji opposite, and Zi or Wu puts Tian Ji in the trine (sharing a palace with Tai Yin), so both reach Tian Ji, about 64% of this type; only Si and Hai do not. For those that do, the question is whether Qing Yang reaches the San Fang Si Zheng. The old word for harm reads today more like early encounters with rules, hard training and setbacks; loneliness, more like a growing preference for quiet and a few close friends. It is a tendency, not a fate, and without Qing Yang it does not apply.

A Metal 4 Tian Liang seems focused on results. Are they too calculating?

Earth producing Metal makes their care very down to earth: they care whether you can actually make something, not just about cheering you on. That practicality is easily mistaken for being calculating, but really they believe help only counts when it shows results. Be clear about your goal, and they will give you the most practical next step.

How common is the Metal 4 · Tian Liang type?

Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 2,078 have Tian Liang leading the Life Palace and the Metal 4 Bureau: about 0.8%, roughly 1 in 127 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.

Why can two people born on the same day be different types?

Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.

What is the Five Elements Bureau?

The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.

How is this different from MBTI?

MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.

Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?

When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.

A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
