What the Metal 4 · Tian Ji type is like
A Metal 4 Tian Ji is a finely finished wood carving: the knife of their surroundings keeps paring them back, cutting away stray branches and leaving clean, exact lines. Once the carving is done, their ideas tend to be the precise kind.
Tian Ji meets the Metal 4 Bureau
Tian Ji is Wood and the Metal 4 Bureau is Metal. Metal cuts Wood, so the bureau works on the star, and for Tian Ji that means polishing: it demands precision and results and leaves little room for wandering thoughts. About 50% have Tian Ji alone; among the pairings Tian Ji with Tian Liang leads at close to 19%, in Chen or Xu at Profit (Li) brightness, which makes Profit the most common level for this type. Tian Ji with Ju Men is about 17% and Tian Ji with Tai Yin about 14%. The Mao, Chen and Si branches are the most frequent; Temple (Miao) in Wu or Zi and Fallen (Xian) in Chou or Wei are about 17% each.
Work and money
The large share of Tian Liang pairings defines this type. Volume three says “Tian Ji and Tian Liang meeting: good at talking strategy,” and its note offers Mencius as the example, with Tian Ji and Tian Liang in his Travel Palace. Talking strategy, for the old writers, meant persuading with reasons. Metal cutting Wood sharpens that gift, and this Tian Ji lays out a strategy together with its conditions, exceptions and fallbacks. They suit work that turns on careful judgement: engineering, financial planning, policy design, teaching. With money they calculate everything, comparing prices, plans and terms, and rarely buy on impulse. At some point the comparing has to end in a decision, because timing has a cost too.
Love and getting along
In love they are attentive and a little exacting. They notice the details you missed, and say so. To them that is care; to a partner it can sound like grading. People shaped by Metal cutting Wood are used to being held to a standard, and can hold others to one without realising. Swap “this could be better” for “I love it when you do it this way.” Same observation, completely different effect.
When things get stuck
Carve too far and the wood turns thin: the bar is so high nothing feels good enough to hand in. Or the pressure around them leaves them attempting only safe things, and inspiration slowly dries out. Separate where precision matters from where rough is fine, and once a month do something on purpose that nobody will score, so the wood can put out new shoots.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
At age 4 (counted the traditional way) a Metal 4 Tian Ji enters the first 10-year period and stays in the Life Palace until 13. From 14 the period moves on, toward the Parents Palace or the Siblings Palace depending on whether the periods run forward or backward for your chart, and it changes again at 24 and 34. Polished wood shows its grain clearly, and each time this type moves to a new palace, they carry along the precision the last one trained into them.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type Tian Ji leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.
The bureau is the Metal 4 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 4 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
What does “Tian Ji and Tian Liang meeting: good at talking strategy” mean?
It comes from volume three of the Complete Book: people with Tian Ji and Tian Liang together, in the same palace or meeting through the trines, are good at strategy, at reading a situation and devising a plan; the note gives Mencius as its example. The Xingge chart marks only the same-palace case: Tian Ji and Tian Liang in the Life Palace in Chen or Xu are marked Shan Yin Chao Gang (Wisdom and Shelter Serve the Court), from the Taiwei Fu line “With kindness and shelter upholding the court's order, one is an elder of benevolence and compassion,” and also marked Ji Yue Tong Liang. About 19% of Metal 4 Tian Ji have this pairing. The old idea of talking strategy was planning on paper. Today it means laying out a strategy so clearly that people want to follow it, and once the plan is written, naming who will carry it out.
Is a Tian Ji at Fallen (Xian) brightness less clever?
No. About 17% of Metal 4 Tian Ji are at Fallen in Chou or Wei. Brightness describes how a star's strength shows up. At Temple or Prosperous, Tian Ji's ideas go outward and its reactions are quick; at Fallen it turns inward, turning things over privately, and by the time it speaks the thinking is already thorough. Both are Tian Ji, one facing out and one facing in.
How common is the Metal 4 · Tian Ji type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 4,376 have Tian Ji leading the Life Palace and the Metal 4 Bureau: about 1.7%, roughly 1 in 60 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
