Where the chart lines up

Painting on Sundays as a stockbroker

Around 1873 Gauguin was working as a stockbroker in Paris and began painting in his spare time, often spending Sundays at Pissarro's home and painting in his garden; his artistic training came mostly from teaching himself and from time spent with other painters. In his chart, the Life Palace holds Tian Ji (Xian) with Hua Ji. Tian Ji is the star of thinking and digging into things, and Hua Ji marks where care and effort go; teaching himself to paint alongside his job lines up with this position.

Deciding in 1883 to live by painting

The Paris stock market crash of 1882 shrank the art market, and his income fell sharply. In October 1883 (nominal age 36) he wrote to Pissarro that he had decided to make his living from painting at all costs, and asked for his help. In the annual Four Transformations of 1883, Ju Men (Wang) takes Hua Quan (Transformation of Power) into his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace covers career, and Hua Quan is taking the lead; taking his working life into his own hands that year lines up with his choice to paint full time.

Degas bought his work and spoke up for him

Degas was the contemporary Gauguin admired most and one of his earliest supporters, buying his work and persuading the dealer Durand-Ruel to buy it too. The November 1893 exhibition at the Durand-Ruel gallery was organized mainly by Degas; Monet and Renoir mocked it, while Degas praised the work and bought pieces. In his chart, the Friends Palace holds You Bi with Hua Ke (Transformation of Fame). The Friends Palace covers friends and peers, You Bi is help, and Hua Ke is reputation, which fits Degas backing him in public.
