Navigating the spacecraft
As command module pilot of Apollo 8, Lovell served as navigator, using the spacecraft's sextant to fix its position by measuring star positions, and these measurements were used to calculate the required mid-course corrections; in otherwise idle time he also maneuvered the module to sight stars and entered the data into the guidance computer. His chart shows Tian Ji (De) with Hua Ji in the Life Palace. Tian Ji is often read as thinking and calculation, and Hua Ji marks where the mind is fixed. His work as navigator can be read alongside it.

On September 14, 1962 (nominal age 35), Deke Slayton informed Lovell that he had been accepted into NASA's second group of astronauts, for the Gemini and Apollo programs; the official announcement came on September 17, and the group became known as the "New Nine". In the annual Four Transformations of 1962, Tian Liang (Miao) takes Hua Lu (Transformation of Wealth) into his natal Career Palace. The Career Palace stands for career, and Hua Lu is opportunity, which fits his selection as an astronaut.

In the summer of 1948 the Navy began cutting its "Flying Midshipman" program, and cadets came under pressure to transfer out; Lovell decided to apply to the United States Naval Academy, secured a nomination from his local U.S. Representative, John C. Brophy, and entered Annapolis in July of that year. His chart shows the birth-year Tan Lang (Li) with Hua Lu in the Parents Palace.
