What the Metal 4 · Empty Palace type is like
When the mood in a meeting room shifts, a Metal 4 empty-palace type notices first. They are like a metal antenna, picking up the signal before anyone has said a word.
Empty Palace meets the Metal 4 Bureau
An empty palace is read by borrowing the main stars of the opposite palace; the borrowed stars do not actually sit in the Life Palace, and their brightness is that of the opposite palace. A Metal 4 empty palace has one very visible feature: the Life Palace clusters in Wei, You and Shen, together over 55%, the most concentrated of the five bureaus. The most common borrowings are Wu Qu with Tan Lang, Tai Yang with Ju Men, Tian Tong with Tai Yin and Tian Ji with Tian Liang, about 9% each; the least common are Zi Wei with Tan Lang and Tian Ji with Tai Yin, about 7% each. Ju Men is Water, and Metal produces Water, so the bureau nourishes a borrowed Ju Men; Tian Liang is Earth, and Earth produces Metal, so a borrowed Tian Liang feeds the bureau back; Wu Qu is Metal, the same as the bureau. With giving on one side and receiving on the other, this type is especially sensitive to signals, both picking them up and sending them on.
Work and money
Their value at work is translating the signals they pick up for others: a boss's unspoken worry, the hesitation in a client's voice, tension in a team about to boil over. They are often first to notice and first to find the right person to tell. With money they are very sensitive to which way the market wind blows, and easily carried along by it. A rule of waiting three days after hearing news keeps the signal from turning into noise.
Love and getting along
In love they are good at receiving the other person's mood: from a single “I'm fine” they can hear whether it really is fine. Partners feel understood. But an antenna that is always on gets tired, and they need a partner willing to say plainly what they need, so they are not decoding all day. They can also practise asking about what they pick up: “You seem to have something on your mind today?” is much easier than silent guessing.
When things get stuck
Leave the antenna on too long and it picks up more noise than signal. They respond to everyone's feelings, and over time cannot tell which feelings are their own and which were received. A daily stretch of switched-off time, no messages, no people, lets their own channel come through clearly again. And they need not take responsibility for every signal they catch: hearing something does not mean having to deal with it.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
For a Metal 4 empty palace, each change of life period is like the antenna switching channel: the Life Palace at age 4 (counted the traditional way), then changes at 14, 24 and 34. Around a change they often feel they have suddenly lost reception, and familiar people and settings seem harder to read. It is not a loss of ability; the channel has changed and needs time to retune. In the first year after a change, listening more and judging less, and saving big decisions until the signal is steady, helps.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type the Life Palace has no main star. That is called an Empty Palace, read by borrowing the stars of the opposite palace; Xingge calls this persona the Traveler.
The bureau is the Metal 4 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 4 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
How is the brightness of borrowed stars read in an empty palace?
A borrowed star is read with its brightness in the opposite palace. Take Wu Qu with Tan Lang, the combination this type borrows most often: with the Life Palace in Chou or Wei, both stars across the way are at Temple (Miao), so the borrowed force is strong. Borrow stars that are Fallen in the opposite palace, and the reading should be gentler. When the Life Palace is empty, a Xingge chart shows the opposite palace's stars and their brightness. Read them as tendencies, not as a star actually sitting in the Life Palace.
What work suits a Metal 4 empty palace?
Work that means receiving and translating signals: user research, market intelligence, PR and crisis communications, HR business partnering inside an organisation, interpreting or negotiation support. What these share is understanding what others have not said and turning it into words everyone can follow. A closed-off role facing nothing but a screen leaves this antenna with nothing to do.
How common is the Metal 4 · Empty Palace type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 8,936 have Empty Palace leading the Life Palace and the Metal 4 Bureau: about 3.4%, roughly 1 in 29 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
